What is going on with Avsim forums?

Featured Replies

I'd venture the Mods here see a lot more than most of usand have a better sense for threads about to degrade. Maybe it's better they 'seem to' overreact on occasions than be too liberal in judgmentand let the immature nonsense that is posted at times develop.I've felt threads are being locked quickly lately too,and it can seem arbitrary when some hardware posts are left in the main forum and others are not. I'm wondering if at best, a mod should have a very low profile, with very little activity on the forum other than moderation,so they draw little attention and personal opinion from others. If someone really enjoys interacting on a forum and posting opinionsmaybe they are best being a member? In any case I'm glad someone is moderating here!

A mod's task is to moderate. Not to lock threads based on his opinion that it is pointless or making futurology that it MAY go wrong, and without any explanation why he did it. As someone said, we are not all kids here. I'm 46 and that, to me, is a disrespect.Imagine a TV debate between two politicians. Would it be ok for the moderator to turn off one of the guy's mic and close the debate because he thinks what he is saying his pointless? I guess not. This is why less and less people post in this forum everyday.

First of all, I am sorry you feel disrespected. You just had the misfortune of posting about a topicthat has been thrashed to death around here for the last weeks.... just read all the history andyou will see why the discussion was closed, maybe prematurely...As to your question.. that is a good one! I believe that this is exactly what moderators do in a debate, they close debate on one topic when it looks like it has been exhausted and open up for another topic!

I disagree. It's a tough job being a mod but someone has to make the hard decisions about discussions and keep them on the topic. I agree with David Roch locking the topic and think he should lock this one too as it's really not going anywhere. I am 65 and understand that when mods or people who respond to my posts "yell" at me for saying something stupid or out of line, it's not disrespect as they have NO idea how old everyone is who post on this forum and respond solely based on the subject in hand. You should keep this in mind anytime you post on ANY forum. Now, when David or Tom yell at me in person at an AVSIM conference, then that's another matter! :( Best regards,Jim

That is why, in the forums i run, people has to fill in their age when they register, and it shows near their avatar when they post. It helps a lot.

Actually, I found Alvega's post interesting although I had known of the French version a while back. IMHO, the topic should NOT have been close but it should have been moved. Yes, it MIGHT have gone to seed but it was heading down a logical path, IMHO, that of - how many NEW tweaks are actually OLD tweaks that resurface after a bit. And out of curiosity, how often have we seen this?David - lot's of places this could have gone in a normal fashion - you didn't give it a chance. As I said, I would have preferred it be moved. SO instead, the discussion gets continued, civilly, elsewhere. Not necessary.Player - as a long time member of Avsim, I share your frustration.Mods - I also share YOUR frustration - you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. A call was made, I disagree - nothing more, nothing less. Probably not the last time either! :)David - if I call you a Guardian Angel - will that get you more pizza???:)Vic

I've also been here a only few months and came on board when the BP=0 tweak was first proclaimed. What I noticed was it seemed that anyone dissenting on the value of the tweaks being discussed was pretty much told to step aside. This IMO promoted a mood of taking sides which still persist and is why the topic in question ever came to be. But in the end, those promoting these tweaks were (and still are) really only trying to be helpful. Each user is completely free to try and pass judgement on the value a tweak; it's just that this judgement needs not be, nor perceived to be, a mud slinging exercise. Thanks for reading, TFM.

Sorry guys, just feel like I am watching the forum go down the drain.I Will not mention what specific other forums where other are making comments and would apreciate it if none of that crud is posted in here or as a response as well, as it will only fuel the reasons to lock, delete or what have you. Just keeping it an AVSIM only discussion, please. So, smack me or whatever you like, but what gives?
It puzzles me that you say that because it looks like that your mind setting is already defensive from your last sentence :( It don't even comes to my own mind to "smack"as you call it another fellow simmer. If you appreciated more open discussions then your last sentence isn't very inviting too.(In which you invite which people should reply and how (isn't this also a form of user mod approach too :( )I actually think the mods are doing a great job making this place a more civil place as it ever was :( As an old timer here boy we had some heated discussion (FS9 versus FSX) here in the past and it was sometimes far more aggressive and I never could appreciated that B) Personally I always like the civil mature and polite and respectful approach...There are always a few people that can't behave as in real life but I think the majority in here are just great civil guys and girls. Now we are talking about civilization I always appreciated when a fellow simmer signs his post with a rlw name instead of some forum name like player 2 B) Just another opinion...Cheers,

I think having dedicated moderator accounts (as in one account being the normal user account created when they joined AVSIM, and another account created when they took on the duties as moderator, possibly named something like "FSX subforum moderator") would be a way to separate official moderating duties from posting for fun, thats what I have done on the forums I've run anyways. This does require a bit more work, for both the admins and the moderators themselves, but I do think this is the best way to avoid frictions when it comes to interactions between moderators and members.

Sounds like you want Avsim to run theirs like you run yours.Check the rules, no seperate accounts...

I agree with your statement, unfortunately it seems trying to help and sharing 'tweaks' is troubling some folks. Why? no idea..Sharing information about the internals of FSX and how it affects (us) and our hardware has been my objective since day 1, you are free to test and determine if what I have offered is for you to keep in the fsx.cfg file.BP=0, Vsync FIX, HIGHMEMFIX, Shader Mod... were possible thanks to AVSIM users who decided to support this process of discovery, they fueled my desire to keep moving forward, so, no... just because a few want to play bojote witch hunt is not enough to discourage me... I'll keep doing anything I can to make our hobby better every day, I'm truly sorry if this process of 'discovery' is hurting some people ego's but, I could care less about egos, this is about advancement of our wonderful hobby.Have a great night you all.

IMO AVSIM forums are the best if you ar looking for useful information from a high quality breed of FSX techno-geeks. Sure ego's get bruised like in RL but that comes with the territory. If a heated debate is the result of a hypothisis being thrown out there then we are probably on to something good.jja

Incorrect, you are taking the term literally. I on the forum I frequent daily, and the mods here do far, far more. You would be surprised what I have to deal with and I'm sure it applies to the Avsim moderators.Demand a new name if you like, but moderators tasks aren't just to literally moderate.

A couple of words on this;- Mods are human beings so flawed by human nature that constrains us all! .... I do see different mods with different 'temperatuers' on how they react to some threads. Being honest, I see the likes of Geofa as more rationale and measuerd and yes, maybe I do see David as a little more reactive and occasionally visibly rattled. But I also see David as being bold and willing to challenge where it's needed, so I have respect for both.- An illustration of at least part of the issue around here in my candid opionion, can be seen by the fact that Ron Hamilton was the first person to respond to this thread. As I have said before, his influence, opnion and ego plays too great a measure in AVSIM and it is changing AVSIM's very fabric. Personal? .... I'm afraid so. Sometimes problems are personal and they drive opinions and feelings which are subsequently personal.Davido.

David, there is a long history of your ownl dislike of me personally. Why not keep it to yourself rather than splash it at every opportunity? It really is tiresome and adds nothing to any discussion. :( My response is as legitimate as yours and I'll repeat. We applaud the Mods for making Avsim Forums a much more civil place to participate.Suspect this thread will be locked sooner or later as it seems to be going no where.
