February 11, 201115 yr I'm curious if there are individuals here who have gone to FS9 after flying with FSX for a while.I have a very decent PC, but I'm not getting the very best of frames on FSX, and have experienced several stability issues. To be honest, going back to FS9 has been coming across my mind recently. Curious if there are others on the same boat.
February 11, 201115 yr Still confused why it has to be one or the other. I use them both for different reasons quite happily. - Aaron
February 11, 201115 yr No, but I was tempted to at first until I got fsx running properly. Now there is no way i would go back to fs9 unless my pc really couldn't cope with fsx. What was a shame was losing all the addon aircraft and scenery I had in fs9 (and most of it freeware).IAN Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)
February 11, 201115 yr Hello, I honestly use both for now, :( there are some airports and aircraft that currently only work in fs9. and of course if its a heavy fps airport or area. I use fs9 for islands and vfr stuff I use fsx. February 11, 201115 yr At first I used I'd say yeah, because of the performance of FSX. But after all these updates and bjote's tweaks, I'm tempted to uninstall FS9. Only thing stopping me is all the work I put into that sim. 100GB worth.
February 11, 201115 yr I've gone back to FS9, after running FSX for a while (a year shall it be or so?). I even bought some addons to give it a go.I noticed I was tweaking more than flying, and still even after all those numerous tweaks and all that, I would load a VATSIM flight with a packed Heathrow (I mainly fly heavies) in a PMDG 747 or LDS 767, and I would a highly non-satisfying-performance (20-ish FPS, not stuttery but when you pan you get simply slow frame motion, I notice that well).Besides, I totally hate the aircraft selection menu in FSX. I find the one in FS9 way better. But that's me I guess.I still have FSX installed, for trying out, playing, tweaking and stuff - but not for flying. In the light of the last discovered braking-bug on FSX, this even confirms my decision by far.Respect to Bojote and all his tweaks, he really made FSX come far, but not nearly enough unfortunately.I load FS9 to make my regular VATSIM British Airways flight. And I keep enjoying iFLY greatly. And I don't believe things are gonna get better with PMDG's new 737NG.
February 11, 201115 yr Moderator I'm curious if there are individuals here who have gone to FS9 after flying with FSX for a while.I actually reinstalled it about a year or so ago, not because I was having issues with FSX, but because I wanted to use it for flying the PMDG 737. I spent a few days installing FS9, GE Pro, Ultimate Terrain, all my MegaScenery titles, Active Sky, AI, addon airports, and of course my PMDG 737.After all that work getting it set up and making a few flights, I was so disappointed in the look of it that I ended up uninstalling all of it over the course of a few more days. Granted in some areas I got more FPS, but overall I was so disappointed in the look of the ground textures outside of MegaScenery areas and the water textures that it just wasn't worth it for me, especially since I installed it just for one plane.Like some others mentioned, there's no reason not to use it and FSX, especially if there is a certain plane or scenery that is available for one sim and not the other, but for me, since I fly the majority of the time in either the LDS 767 or PMDG 747, having the wide variety of freeware/payware planes available to me that FS9 has isn't a big deal.It was kind of neat to go back and revisit that sim for a few days. It sure brought back a lot of memories for me though since I have probably spent more time in that sim than any other. I really enjoyed the look of the snow effects since they are a lot nicer than the ones FSX offers, but mainly it was just the ground textures that I couldn't take and the fact that the VC of the PMDG 737 looked so dated. If you could get GEX or higher res ground textures to work in FS9 along with FSX style water, then for me FS9 would be great since those are really the only two things about it that I dont care for now.As it stand now for me FSX is my only sim for the next few years or longer depending on how Flight ends up being. February 11, 201115 yr Hello.I have also gone back to FS9 after some flying with FSX.FSX is also for me more tweaking than flying, and I also miss the 2D camera sideview that was removed by FSX.I do not like the camera settings for FSX, and many of the old panels with a lot og good gauges are not compatible with FSX.I will keep FSX installed for some VFR flying with small aircraft only. That's all.Take care.Lars Peter.
February 12, 201115 yr I use them both also, FS9 for my iFLY kick. FSX for my VFR eyecandy. Honestly though If I'm pushing heavies(long hauls) I prefer FS9 as it never crashes.
February 12, 201115 yr Since I'm not a proficient "tube" pilot, I stick to the low and slow stuff. When FSX came out I ordered a new system and haven't looked back. The one exception is that I like the tonal quality of the Hawaiian Islands in FS9 more than in FSX. So I do have that area setup in an FS9 install. With FS Dreamteam's work on Hawaiian airports I will probably install the FS9 versions to compliment the work done by Bill Melichar. And I'll be using my 19m Hawaii mesh, available for download in the library. :(
February 12, 201115 yr i have moved on to fsx and loaded up with addons, orbx, utx, rex etc. its wonderful and i spend most of my time on fsx. I still have fs9 installed and use it occasionally for a few flights or planes that i have and don't have in fsx.but fs9 is basically retired. February 12, 201115 yr waited 2.5 years after FSX release to purchase/install.installed only for support issues.have remained with FS9 as the only sim i use for personal/enjoyment flying.-- D. Scobie, feelThere support forum moderator: https://forum.simflight.com/forum/169-feelthere-support-forums/
February 12, 201115 yr Back in 2006, I uninstalled FS9 a few months before FSX was released to focus my time on other non-hobby related things. When FSX came out, I bought it immediately and installed it. Performance pre-SP1 and performance on my old system was very bad so I ditched FSX and went back to FS9 in 2007. In 2009, my very beefy FS9 install crashed and I could not figure out a way to get it going again without a full reinstall. I didn't feel like doing that and figured a new system was going to be needed. I reinstalled FSX with the service packs and was able to achieve OK performance in non-populated areas so I did some island hopping for a few months while I saved some cash for a new FSX system. Windows 7 was a couple months out so that was my target. Then, a couple weeks before Windows 7 came out, my RAID array became corrupted and all was lost.I built the new system and have been running FSX ever since. I have no desire to go back to FS9 at all. February 12, 201115 yr I'm curious if there are individuals here who have gone to FS9 after flying with FSX for a while.I have a very decent PC, but I'm not getting the very best of frames on FSX, and have experienced several stability issues. To be honest, going back to FS9 has been coming across my mind recently. Curious if there are others on the same boat.FSX runs great for me and looks fantastic, so guess I'm lucky, though I don't have new hardware, and have arguably high standards. I guess if I had stability and perf issues I probably would think about FS9 again, though it would be hard to take after this. I have to make sure I don't ask it to do too much. I often fly the PMDG747 and other taxing aircraft, and even at this resolution, cloud density, autogen, 8xS AA, in the biggest terminals I'm always at 20 or higher (average 25-27), which is only briefly til I'm in the air, then it's locked at 30, with excellent texture update rate, image quality, etc. Tonight I took a nice VFR flight in a very easy to process add on, the Cessna 441 which has the best flight characteristics, image quality, and just plain fun not if modeled in much complexity at the lowest perf impact. This flight was done in PNW terrain w/ fantastic scenery, and I was able to fly locked at 30 w/ occasional drops to 27, but that is with bloom turned on. It's totally smooth. What's not to like about that! I'm lucky in that my machine seems to work well, and I gather it takes a bit of luck (right parts & tweaks that all play well together) to have this good a performance w/ modestly aged hardware.
