DX10 Flashing Runways - Experimental Shader

Featured Replies

Nice video! Do you have the Miami X 2012 scenery installed?

Yes, that's the one.

I'm going to be tweaking further tonight as well. I'm thinking about starting with a fresh FSX.cfg and going from there. The one I currently use has the Bojote and Kostas tweaks, as well as others I may not even remember! :lol

The water's glare in DX10 is something that I would get when using the ENB files. Very nice.

I saw that you were "screen tearing free" in the video. If I can solve that on my system, I'll be pretty much moving to DX10 permanently.

At the start of this DX10 experiment, I was one that tested in a early stage, things didn't went well for me as I did not see any fps improvement comparing to DX9.

After 300+ posts, Steve posted a version 3. With the great response like : "WOW! My fps went sky high...."

I decided give DX10 another go. After following Jim & Paul J NI settings, together with a fresh DX10 cfg. Mostly extract Paul J fsx configuration. I am disappointed that my fps still sitting at around 11-16 at EGLL (London Heathrow). Pretty much the same as DX9.

FYI I also fixed all my missing Alphas & Mips b4 I attempt this latest version . :(

Unfortunately with DX10 I am not able to undock my fmc to a second monitor and resize it without CTD.

Hi,

I'm sorry i'm a little late but coul;d someone please xplain to me how this work and where I can download it? Will i get better qauliy and FPS? Thanks!

That's too bad, Anthony. I reckon anywhere near Heathrow is going to kill any proc doing only 3.1 gig, and paired with a 560.. However! - that said - the only settings you should use are our Inspector settings... Application-controlled AA and AF, + 1/2 Refresh rate for vsync. Set 30 frames inside FSX. Don't copy our fsx.cfg's - they will bring your proc to it's knees..

You probably know how to do this already, so apologies if I'm wasting your time (and my finger-ends), but :-

Fair (clear) weather. No road, boat or ship traffic. No GA traffic - maybe 15% AI, No airport traffic. Find a "lighter" airport, set everything at minimum, and do a DX9 flight, and save it. Go into the settings, change it for DX10, save that one and do it again. Save these fsg.cfg's for reference and for going back. Slowly increase settings, one at a time, one sim and then the other. Jot down what you change so you can keep track - remember, too, some settings will have more impact than others. Write them down. To speed it up a bit you can make a shortcut to the DX9's .FLT file and put it on your desktop. Double-clicking on it will launch the sim right into the flight without going through the startup window. Do the same with the DX10 .FLT. Post your fsx.cfg here: don't forget - each machine is different. I'm sure you can also send it as a pm to Jim, Word Not Allowed, Alain, Jason, me, Danny, Stevejp - many of the guys here, who are becoming successful with DX10. Get some one-on-one advice on what to change!

Just to let you know Paul....I got rid of the fsx logo replacing water textures thing. Buffer pools has to be 1 and the reject threshhold has to be pretty high, the exact number is probably going to be different system to system. But still running great at 30 fps locked and a brand new sim IMO

Finally decieded to give a go with DX10 and I must say using DX10 is like using a new FSX. For the first time with my little computer I am now able to even use "bloom" and stay in the 15 -25 fps most of the time.

Just a big thank you, Steve, and all the others that have contributed to making me and I am sure many others, happy simmers.

Cool airport, why can't I find Barts in FSX? What is this airport ID please?

Absolutely incredible, isn't it, Jason??? I can't believe the jump. You too, Carl!! That we can use bloom and still hold 30 and still fly in stinky weather. Wow! Steve Parsons is close to a god, right about know!

Which reminds me.. in all honesty - we ought to find a way to thank him properly. What do you think? Ideas, guys? pm them, perhaps to Stephen or TomA, maybe?

Thx for the advice Paul, will try your method step by step. :)

Btw, I'm getting those blue fsx logo as well. How and what numbers to aim for with the reject threshold?

This is very likely to be caused by your BufferPools setting, Mark, or Water is not set at 2X High.

Flashing controllers:-

Water at 2xH - BP settings will cause your flashing symptom without this mod.

HIGHMEMFIX=1 - controls cloud flashing and other anomalies.

FFTF - keep it down around .08 - .25 - lower is smoother, but may lead to ground texture blurring.

thanks, will give this a try.

I saw this thread and was amazed to see that so much work had been going on to try to get DX10 working properly on FSX.

I have not tried DX10 for a long time due to the flashing runway issue and thought I should give your modified shader a try.

My system is based on an I7 2600 with 6 GB of RAM and a Nvidia 560Ti graphics card. The operating system is Window 7 (64 bit) and I am using the latest Nvidia drivers. I use two monitors with 1680 x 1050 resolution. I use the second monitor for Plan G.

I am using UTX, GEX and REX (OD) (not REX ESS yet). I have optimised the settings over a period of time trying out various suggestions and currently get a good performance generally well above 30 FPS with no stutters, dropping to around 15 to 25 FPS with complex airports like of Aerosoft London City Extreme.

Evaluation

I first compared DX9 to the unmodified DX10 with various airports and aircraft and noted the differences in the visual presentation and frame rates.

I noticed little difference in frame rates generally but at complex airports like Aerosoft London City and UK2000 Birmingham Extreme the frame rates dropped noticeably with DX10 and there were stutters.

I could see the benefits of DX10 in the lighting and surface reflections but I got noticeable tearing when panning and got runway flickering at several locations. I also noticed the shadow under the aircraft flickered a lot.

I installed the updated shader and observed the following:

The flickering runway textures were fixed.

The tearing when panning was fixed.

The flickering shadow was better but still showed abrupt shade changes when panning and often changing shade a second or so after panning was stopped.

The frame rates dropped significantly at complex airports down to 9 to 12 FPS with considerable stuttering.

The complex airports in particular seemed to have flickering almost sparkling effects in the textures.

The AA looked a lot poorer than with DX9.

The start up animation of one of the aircraft briefly showed a black square box for the propeller.

I tried various settings with locked and unlocked maximum frame rates and various settings for the AA using the Nvidia control panel but never managed to get the AA as good DX9 and often suffered a significant drop in frame rate.

I have gone back to DX9 for the moment but am still very keen to use DX10. I will continue to follow this thread with great interest.

Keep up the brilliant work

Regards

Hi,

I would start with a default shader directory, a default fsx.cfg, and a default control panel setup of the GPU and set to let app decide and set FSX up with full AA. I have noticed AA disintigrates with poor fsx.cfg's, not with DX10.
