Plane cockpit tease..

I agree, I flew for many years with no GPS, and never had a problem. I think relying on a GPS is probably not the safest thing to do, what happens if it malfunctions?

GPS is also fairly low-pri for me. Nice to have, but not an essential item.

Not that they break a lot, but still...I'll never forget my first CFI taking my shiny new electronic flight computer from me, back when they were just coming out, tossing the batteries into the back seat, handing it back and saying "Batteries are dead. NOW calculate your wind-correction."

Out came my whiz-wheel.

That would be a tough one for the Mustang and Corsair jockeys coming from GTA San Andreas as well as for the "Make it more real than it ever gets" Boeing and MD glass cockpit / FMC semi professionals ...

If I had another wish free, I´d vote for sectional maps to go with the next update

Intel core i5-12600KF,  ASRock B760-H2/M2, Kingston DDR5-4800 32 GB, Asus Geforce RTX 4060 TI 16GB, Samsung SSD 980 1 TB M.2 SSD, Lexar NM790 SSD 2TB

I still only use a Garmin Nuvi 255w automotive GPS as a reference during VFR cross country. It works great for basic positioning.

+1

LOL, I remember after my first solo and the consequent 'PIC' hours thinking I was now a pilot...........then the navigation stuff started.

Suddenly having to fly the aircraft without thinking too much about it whilst working out calculations on the whizz wheel and referencing the sectional map was brain overload for a while!

Good for ORBX .by the time i/we get the chance to blow the same amount of money i had spent in FSX. Flight its only goin to get better. I hope....

I believe that mainly due to the mountainous terrain, a GPS should be almost essential in certain regions of Alaska, but L. Adamson will better confirm.....

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Well, not essential but convenient, I guess. It's not that they didn't fly there in the days before GPS...

Your instructor was a smart person.

For what is worth:

If the next cockpit is a working model of the sticker we now have, then couple things are missing:

knobs for the CDI and altimeter, a turn coordinator and a magnetic compass; also the Garmin "GPS" we are probably getting is just a "moving map", just like the Icon's; alas: a toy..

But thankfully we will be sitting at the front seat, and not flying a kite.

PD: I wish my avatar could get rid of his infernal Hawaiian shirt.

I never had an electronic flight computer, I've always had to use an E6B for my flight calculations. On my cross-country nav excercises my instructor threw in pleny of diversions and made sure I had no choice but to use the whizz-wheel.

It looks like the GPS screen will also be serving as our Heading Indicator with the Cub. Sure would be nice to have a larger font option for that.

Look up for compass

You are correct.

My mistake, the POV I had selected just showed a black structure; changing the POV showed the compass.

a turn coordinator

Well, the Icon's turn coordinator was on the moving map screen, so if it's using the same moving map as the Icon, that's probably where it will be.
