KPHL RELEASED

Featured Replies

Get in line Robert! I already pinged for Easton/Newnan here in E. Maryland. Anyway, you already have a famous Billy Joel song to hang your hat on!

On a sadder note, I lost a good friend back about 1997 who based out of KABE. Gary Blackman, then-owner of Blackman Cycles in Emmaus. He went down in IMC on approach to Leesburg, Va. in his Piper Cheyenne. I just cannot fly MSFS into either KABE or KJYO since. Having read the FAA accident report I believe he began descending from the IAF thinking he was at the FAF.

You will love what Ian did not only to KPHL, but to the surrounding area. Lots of accurate and spectacular visual cues added. He went well past just the airport with this project. This should be award-winning! Just look at this!

Sorry to hear about your friend. Yes. Very familiar with Emmaus area and I remember that shop. I too, lost a friend, Mr. Peter Karoly, who was flying his Socata TBM 700 from Boston to Bedford on a night of bad weather. He lived in Allentown, and flew out of KABE as well.

Billy Joel's song doesn't help me in my hobby: flight simulation.

KABE isn't that spectacular as compared to some airports, but I'd just like to see a more detailed, more realistic version of it.

Ian,

This is really beautiful craftsmanship! I thank you so much for your contribution.

fantastic scenery! was just in philly on thurs. and this is spot-on in all respects. while we're all requesting other PA airports, I would like to make a shout out for my regional hub of KMDT Harrisburg international. I think it would be amazing if this airport were done to this level of detail. you've got Three Mile island just to the south on approach, the old Capital City airport across the river (now a GA field) the military hanger for the National Guard's SpecOps c-130's and the city itself that has never been done well in FS. I know it'll never happen, but I can ask at least!

nice solid scenery ...

Thank's Ian and Shez and lets not forget everyone else evolved in the project thanks its a great scenery. :)

It looks like this thread over at their forums explains what's going on...

http://www.sunskyjet...php?topic=832.0

And it may be just an issue with MTX...

Ahh sweet.. I'll wait and see what ianj cooks up if anything.. Editing airports is a bit out of my knowledge base so I'll wait to see if he turns up anything to patch it up.

No big deal really.. :) It was free after all and I've paid over $30 for airports that were less quality. Donation incoming!

Does anyone know the reason why this release isn't front page headline news here on Avsim? If it were from FSD, or Aerosoft, or Blueprint as payware it would receive that attention. Instead here is an absolutely top-tier FSX scenery add on that is donation supported, but rivals anything else out there.

At 3 pages in length in only a day-and-a-half this is perhaps the hottest thread on Avsim right now. Just another indicator of it's significance!

How's this oversight happening? I just started a topic on this in the Letters to the Editorial Staff forum.

Seeing the PPL park stadium AND the Commodore Barry bridge is a cue for me that I'm approaching the FAF for the visual and instrument approaches into runway 9R, and that it is time for me to drop the gear, as I have seen IRL both on the ground and in the air.

Great post A.J.

I have an area question for you. You may notice in my screen shots both before (FSX default scenery) and after installing SunSkyJet's KPHL that two bridges appear in the Commodore Barry Bridge area. Again, its there in my scenery before SunSkyJet's scenery, and after as well, so it's not coming from it. I used to cross the CB Bridge an average of twice a week as I traveled back and forth from my home in Medford, NJ to the Lancaster, York, and Hanover, Pa. areas on business. I for the life of me could not recall a second bridge, such as a railroad bridge. This evening I checked Google Earth and don't see a second bridge, or any evidence that something like a railroad bridge was removed since FSX was released. By the way, readers should take a look at the real-world Google Earth photos of the CB Bridge to better appreciate Ian's work!

Are there two bridges in the FSX default scenery? The only scenery add on I have installed that could be producing that red bridge in my screen shots is perhaps UTX. What do you see in that area? Here are my two relevant screen shots:

This scenery is amazing. Runs very nice and just looks outstanding. I feel rather bad not being able to donate to them, medial bills unfortunatley come first. Just know that this little gem was a great ray of light in a dark week. Thank you guys.

I have UTX as well, and have never seen the CB bridge with default FSX , either with or without UTX. I have just disabled sunsky KPHL to verify, and I only see the "flat" bridge/road from UTX. Not sure why you are seeing the red bridge, is it possible you have the FS9 version of Sunsky KPHL still installed,if you had decided to try out my FS9-FSX conversion file while waiting for the FSX edition? That is the only other scenery package I know of apart from the new FSX version that has that bridge rendered fully.

Ah! You caused me to investigate further. I found I had EZ Object Library activated in my scenery library. I deactivated it and then because I was in a in a hurry this morning used an archaic method and took off from Wilmington, De. by keyboard (i.e. without flight controls). I flew down the Delaware River and found the mysterious red bridge at Chester was now absent! The beautiful SunSkyJet rendition of the Commodore Barry bridge was there by itself, as it should be. Also, I appeared to see the previously missing PAPI lights shining brightly at the Tdz end of 09L. I had to abort the flight at that point so I will confirm later.

I did a test flight the other morning and I must say that this is too good to be freeware! I never really flew into KPHL due to the crap FSX scenery but now, I must say that I'll be landing and taking off from there more often. Good job to the devs on that project!!
