Coolsky DC-9 Released!

Featured Replies

I just bought it and currently I am very upset about it. Took me 3 tries to get from the aircraft selection to the loading screen. It crashes all the time DSOUND.DLL and some fsx.exe crash indicating some sort of operation not possible. Never seen that before. Whats wrong with that???

It states in the manual that you should load a default aircraft at you desired airport first, then load the DC-9. Have you tried that? If that doesn't work, perhaps you have an installation issue. You can register at their support forum for technical assistance.

Shame about that especially since my new Ideal Flight acquisition that loads the aircraft directly. In my opinion this requirement should not be necessary anymore.

Yeah indeed it seems that you must load default aircraft first, when I didn't FSX got frozen several times.

I was having similar problems, which I solved by 1) disabling my AV software, and then 2) deleting the CSDC9 gauge in the [Trusted} section of the FSX.cfg file (looks like this: <fsx drive>:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\GAUGES\CSDC9.DLL.zlhieenrqtntkwucwitohowtczqcaockzecnrorq=2) and then 3) restarting FSX and reloading the DC-9. That gauge will re-register and hopefully the aircraft will load just fine, as it did for me. I think that the AV software interfered with the registration of the DC-9 gauge. I hope this might be useful to you as well.

Nevermind, after a reinstall it seems to work fine.

My thoughts about it are....a bit mixed. I love older jetliners because they have a whole different atmosphere in them compared to all those flying computers today and I like the DC-9 series with their roaring JT8D's. Until now, the payware market had the Maddog, the CLS Md-80, the old Flight1 MD-80 and the SkySimulations DC-9 pack, of which three of them were visually outdated and the CLS one was a toy.

Here is my like - dislike list:

Likes:

-the flight model seems to be quite good, it behaves as expected, has LOTS of engine power and is fun to hand-fly. I can only compare it to other sim aircraft because I am not a real pilot.

-Lots of effort seemed to be put into the flight deck design, although I would have liked an option to change the panel color like in the maddog, the reflections and self-shadowing is great and the only old steam gauges in FSX I have seen which were comparably good were the CaptainSim 707 ones.

-the night lighting of the instruments look very realistic, since the missing dome light is a known problem I wont complain, also, I hope that one day it will be possible to use the "white" and "red" turn knobs for what they are there. ;)

Dislikes:

-The access to the ground config menu is a bit complicated, you have to go to the views mini panel and flight center to get there and when you are there, the flight center blocks the views on your doors opening. Integrated cockpit training system is nice but it only works on 2d-panels and since I fly with fspassengers, I do not need its fuel and load menus.

-Sounds. Although the interior sounds are quite good, I wonder what the exterior sound is supposed to be. There is some swoosh noise on the outside all the time and you have to listen carefully to make out your planes engines. If you do, you will notice they still have sound cones, though. But still, this is a call for a good TSS pack.

-The exterior model. Man, what a disappointment. One reason why I was waiting for that bird was, because the FSX world does not have an up-to-date exterior DC-9 model except for the CLS MD-80, which has barely any systems modeled. Sorry, but in times of PMDG's NGX I do not know how one can release something like Coolsky did. Except for the wings surface and the transparent windows, this DC-9 barely has any details and McPhat was apparently only employed to work on the interior. The wings itself look like glued to the fuselage without any transition and -worse- lack any wing flex animation. This has been my only dislike with the maddog for a long time, that the wings look like they were stiff and there is no airflow around them, making the whole plane look like its still on the ground. Coolsky repeated that error in their DC-9, but its 2012 now! Captain Sim did a way better job with the exterior of their 727 and it was released 4 years ago. A shame. :(

I'm not sure real DC-9 wings flex...

They probably 'vibrate' though. Like any aircraft wing...

Flex is different.

Best regards, Fritz ESSONO

Just bought it and i love a lot about it but I have one major issue: while I am getting with all my other planes (incl. PMDG NGX) fps in the 30-50 range do I get with the DC 9 fps in the 8-13 range. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

this MD-80 does, (skip to 1:50) its not like on a 777 of course, but I think it makes a great difference on how the plane looks in the air. the CLS MD-80 had that animation, too, and so does the CS 727, a plane of similar size and age.

OK, to clarify: I do not expect much flexing wings from a DC-9, but still most FSX aircrafts wings look different in-flight than on the ground, as in real life. Not on this DC-9 though.

Something I cannot understand is why a steam gauge aircraft is preforming worse then something like the ngx or 767/757 with many lcd/crt screens I don't own it yet since I'm going by the many post's here I guess there must be something bringing down the frame rates in some systems.

Hmmm i am getting very good frame rates on this bird, no issues whatsoever. In fact it goes better than most of my complex add-ons.

As for the wing flex, this is a DC9 series 30, just a hop away from the 707 and DC8 and not that far from the DC4 and 6 it replaced in domestic service.

Asking for wing flex is a little far fetched in my humble opinion.

Turned on DX 10, same bad frame rates around 8-12fps (NGX is way above 30).

Here is my system:

I7 running at 3.9 mghz

16gb ram

GTX 480 OC

Win 7, 64 bit

Samsung 512 gb ssd (only OS and FSX on it)

It is a shame because I really like the plane.

VC with textures set to 4096 Amazing, super sharp, so if there blurry it's your setting not the DC-9. The only bit that is not hiRes is the cockpit door and how much time to you use looking at that.

Where do you set that?

Espen said he is looking at flexing wings as a possible upgrade in the future for the DC-9.
