MD or NG?

Featured Replies

Sirs (and Ladies)

I keep heading back to the PMDG site looking at the MD-11 and 737. I've had the JS4100 for a couple of years and probably have more time on that than everything else in the hanger combined. NGX looks the bees knees from an FSX point of view, and the routes, liveries etc available suit the available time better. But... it just really doesn't do anything for me. Whereas the MD-11, well... noise, power, looks... That it only sold 200, saw limited destinations and is disappearing is of no consequence to me because I'll be flying 'chartered' cargo routes wherever takes my fancy anyway. I really should just get the MD-11, shouldn't I. Thoughts?

Both are awesome and well worth the dough.

I bought them both but the 737 does have some pretty groundbreaking capabilities and it's frame rate on my older machine is way better than I thought it would be. It is actually a joy to fly and even though the learning curve is slightly steep-the Tutorials are excellent and the documentation is extremely thorough. If I was "funds limited" I would have to recommend the 737 over the MD-11 just because of the newer features and the awesome customization abilities though I would certainly get that MD-11 as soon as I could afford another because it is really really that good.

I have both, and you wouldn't regret either purchase, but you will read many posts of people going back to the MD-11 again despite

the excellent NG.

What might swing the deal either way would be to download the documentation of each tutorial flight to help you decide.

Beech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?
ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry.

MD11 J41 747 NGX . . awaiting 777 !!!

I bought the MD 11 and hardly fly the NGX anymore, to be honest, i dont miss it at all.

The MD11 is fantastic, a lot of power, different dynamics, wonderful automation, challenging handling, absolutely love it!

The MD-11 was the first addon I bought for FSX. I had a lot of fun, however as the NGX came out I haven't flown with the MD-11 for along time. However for the last few months I switched back to the MD-11 as, in my oppinion, the MD-11 is more interesting, challenging and fun than the NGX is.

A true aviation enthutiast should never leave out the MD11, although it will never become a symbol for mass transportation like the B 737 or an A 320.

I got the -NGX based on the glowing reviews here and elsewhere and enjoyed flying it quite a bit. I decided to give the MD-11 a try and haven't flown the -NGX since. The -NGX is nicer graphically but its not significantly better than the MD-11. Both are great add-on's but the MD-11 is just a lot more fun to fly.

It really comes down to what you like. As for noise, I think the NGX makes more of it. The MD-11 engines sound great, they are just farther away from the flight deck. Don't let the size of the MD discourage you. With high power to weight ratio, it is able to get in and out of a lot of places you would never see a 747. In fact I see a FedEx MD lining up for final into KMSP rwy 35 (8000') everyday at 6:15pm local time. The MD-11 is the biggest "short haul" in my hanger. Both are excellent add ons, it really comes down to you.

Both excellent aircraft, I bought the NGX before the MD-11 and find that I've hardly used the NGX since. I find it more challenging and enjoyable to fly despite the NGX being a more sophisticated model. Can't explain why I prefer the MD-11 when logic suggests the NGX is a better all-rounder, I just like its idiosyncrasies compared to the normal Boeing way of doing things. The ideal solution is to own both!

C'mon chaps, if both was an option I'd simply get both! ;-). MD seems to be clearly ahead for much the same reasons I'm tempted.
