Regretful purchases for FSX

Featured Replies

My only regrets that I have spent money on are the following and its not because there is anything wrong with these addons, it's just merely that I either dont ever use them or I have found an alternative that I replaced them with.

1. ORBX NA, full AU package and all the airports. Nothing wrong with any of them, but I really never fly to these locations and the PNW is really much better suited to low and slow than airliner flying. Between the regions and all the airports I have spent about $250 to $300 that I wouldn't mind having back.

I agree. I have a few of the NA regions, all of the Australian Regions and a few of the airports. The products are better suited for GA and when I fly GA aircraft, I don't do it in Australia or NW N. America.

  • I regret buying FSX lol

  • I've yet to make a purchase I truly regretted, but that's from being very careful. There are a few airplanes I don't fly much but I can't say that's all their fault. Most everything I've bought doe

FSPassengers - mediocre product with horrible support.

Some very interesting stuff coming up here, and its refreshing to read the antidote to the usual hallelujah chorus.

Agreed, as many of those singing praises, are doing so on their Free Review version.

If you want the next Free Review version, there "may" be pressure to say only nice things.

FS-0,FS-1, FS-5 FSW95, FS98, FS2000, FS2004, FSX

In that case let me add another to the list, except ill call it the regrettable "trial" product.

FSTramp, the fsx successor to FSNavigator came out just recently. But I wouldn't call it a successor since it actually has LESS features then FSNavigator did.

They have a trial, which I tried. But i discovered that you can't run the program in fsx full screen and you can't run the FXAA shader injector with FSTramp.

I didn't know that at first and emailed the developer for support. After verifying I was trying the trial and hadnt actually spent money yet, he told me that unstable over clocked hardware was to blame for fsx crashing every time I opened the FSTramp map.

I emailed back I had zero over clocked anything. He never replied and I sent three more polite emails asking for help to troubleshoot his trial. He didn't reply to any of them.

Later I found through process of elimination that it was the FXAA injector I use.

I wish the sim community could start a "developer black list" because this guy definitely belongs in it. He had single answer support that wasn't right and didn't want to even attempt helping out a potential buyer.

FSTramp is a skeleton version of FSNavigator that was created for fsx not for the consumer's enjoyment but to stuff this guy's pockets with undeserved money.

I'm very glad I never bought it and would have been forced to put up with his abysmal support, or lack of I should say.

Sorry for the rant but this one experience left the most sour taste in my mouth.

+1

A very disappointing product, especially after such a long wait.

I think you summed up it up very well.

I would add: The Fixed Colours are far from optimal, and the Text Background Color on labels is just plain UGLY. Display is cluttered and difficult to read, and a massive regression from the original FS9 product FsNavigator,

The one GOOD feature was the time limited Evaluation. At least it gave one the opportunity to try the product, and then decide if it was what one wanted.

I have to echo that this indeed is a nice, refreshing thread. It's interesting to read all of this input and honest opinions (and indeed, a lot more civil than I thought this thread would be as I was hesitating clicking on it). By far constructive criticism and some calling-out is needed in this hobby for buyer awareness.

Now, to contribute, I will start by saying I hold nothing against any developer, I have a very high respect and regard for the time and work that anyone would put in to creating any addon to further the realm and possibilities of FS.

That aside, and in my opinion I would have to say the first disappointment that came to mind when I saw the title of the thread was the CLS A330. I knew it was going to be a "lite" addon going in, but the want for an A330 for FSX surpassed that. Bought it, hopped in the VC, and immediately was floored by how poor the VC was. Honestly, I can't even find anything good to say about it, it really seemed a lot worse than I could have imagined. I revisited it several months after hangaring it that first time just to see if I was being overly critical at the time, and I wasn't, and immediately regretted the purchase, and have permanently had it hangared since. I gave CLS another shot with the MD-81/2/7, and was really quite pleased with it. My only complaint was with the sounds, but that was easily remedied by purchasing and installing the fantastic TSS JT8D soundpack.

Area 51 also caused a bit of regret. I bought the UH-1Y, Kiowa, Chinook, and C-17 during a sale a while back, and again, poor VC's on all of them in my opinion. Also, the sounds for them seemed very constant, not variable especially during a flyby. The outside textures are pretty good, but I'm very much a VC guy, and that is where my priorities are in looking at quality. Though I did catch them on sale, I have very very rarely used them since, and wouldn't mind being able to get that money back and have put it towards something else.

Lastly I would have to give a partial regret, which is the CS C-130. I say partial because everything about it, including the VC especially, is fantastic. My issue with this addon are the sounds. They have a strange warping sound in the cockpit, don't really change sound during power changes, and changing views and going back to the VC requires a cycle of the FSX sounds using "Q". Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a payware or freeware soundpack for a C-130 anywhere, minus one payware soundpack from Turboprop Simulations, which is the same soundpack. If anyone does make it this far into reading this mini-book I've so far written and can suggest a good C-130 soundpack for FSX, please let me know!!! I would owe you big time! :wink2:

I will admit I have a bias in regards to the VC's of addon aircraft, which is not helped by being spoiled by the likes of addons like the NGX, Aerosoft Airbus X and now Airbus X Extended, Cera Sim helicopters, A2A, Nemeth, and a few others.

As for scenery, I can honestly say I have no regrets that come to mind. I'm very cautious when it comes to scenery as that can tend to be the most taxing on a system. Out of probably 30-40 scenery addons I have, the largest I've gone would be UK2000's Gatwick, FSDT LAX and HNL, and Aerosoft's Mega Airport CDG, all of which I was very pleasantly surprised with barely any loss of smoothness or FPS. The only one that comes close to the ouch factor I've found is FlyTampa's KTPA. Tampa hits my system pretty hard, and I definitely can't take the NGX there. But, that scenery is so great I don't mind and do not really regret the purchase, as I can take other, less taxing aircraft there. Everything they come out with is beyond top-notch (TNCM and Dubai are ridiculously amazing in every aspect).

That's my two cents worth.

Kyle

Another one I just remembered buying that I regret.

FS Cabin Crew

It adds cabin announcements and allows for custom voice packs.

I bought it after being fed up with FSPassengers and realizing the only good thing left from that product were the cabin announcements.

I bought FS Cabin Crew and tried it on my next flight. I quickly realized that you can't adjust the volume of the voices.

At all.

Emailed the developer and asked if a volume control could be added.

The reply was "no, but you can edit each individual file with software and adjust the volumes manually."

Terrific. Uninstalled.

Why does the flightsim community take a position where it's almost blasphemy to rant or criticize a payware product? If I pay money for something and it sucks, fact of the matter is it sucks and I don't see why someone can't give their negative opinion about it.

Seems like the old thinking of never blast a freeware product mentality (which I support 1,000%) is spilling over to the payware scene. Once a developer decides to charge money for his work, it changes the ballgame.

CS 777, [Their crappy Customer Support]

I do have some mixed feelings though, after all I spent my money and I always convince myself that I didn't not waste money, when that is often the unfortunate fact.

about 5 hours ago I bought MiamX and there was a sale on for the cargo pack for the Justflight DC-6 so I bought it, not even thinking that the PMDG DC-6 will be out in the next while and I have lots to keep me busy before then. Total waste, not that it's a bad product, but that in my situation I'll never use it. Ugh...

Luckily I'm such a control freak that I research things and procrastinate to such a ridiculous degree that I can't really say I have a single regretted FSX purchase!

Lol. Me too.

Although its fair to say that i have some add-ons i don't use now but thats not to say i regret buying them. I do have a nagging feeling though that they should get used more as i paid for them.

Time is limited and i can only use so much of it.

Kind Regards

Simon.

Regrettable purchases.

Aircraft:

- Just Flight's DC6-B, Comet Airliner: nice airplanes, good that they were being made. But very cartoonish and no system depth. Will never buy from Just Flight again. Although I have to admit I recently came to understand that Just Flight is producing for the casual simmer who just want to fly without hassle and reading manuals. But that's not me.

- Ariane: horrible activation, not very good customer support. Way too expensive.

- Digital aviation F70/100: as a dutch guy I was thrilled to see a nice rendition of this iconic aircraft. But those guys never delivered their promise of making the aircraft complete (with VC). So I'm never gonna buy from them again (also not, when delivered by Aerosoft)

- Carenado: Although they make nice looking airplanes, they don't cut it system wise. Have been disappointed with their last releases.

- Iris: BD-5J Microjet, Silence Twister: nice models but without character and not yet finished. Uninspiring aircraft.

- Golden Age: freeware quality. although interesing models

- Fly Sim Server: 1966 Old school Skyllane 182K: rubbish!

- DIRK STUCK DESIGN - FIESELER STORCH 156C. My god it's bad. The FSAddon version is highly recommended though

Tools:

- PANAYOTIS TSIOUFIS- FS EXPANSIONS MANAGER: I didn't even understand the program.

- B. RENK - MyTRAFFIC X V5.3 PROFESSIONAL: low quality AI models. German GA in US.

And I can get on and on. I wasted too much money on this hobby. Mainly because I'm too hasty and like to jump on the bandwagon. So I guess It's my own fault. Because their are actually very good products as well.

 Yeah, I'd forgotten about that one. Good job it was really cheap!

The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

Just to demonstrate that it is not about bashing, and just about a personal take on things, my last regret was just yesterday, and it was an add-on that 99% of simmers seem to adore. (quite justifiably).

It was the 50% 'flight sim deal of the day' and I bought the Flight One BN-2, and yep, although it is a very well regarded, well praised add-on, I regret it - not because there's anything wrong with it, but because it was a mindless, impetuous purchase; I just did not need a utility plane of this type. If I want to do this type of flying, I would always fly the Carenado C208, and I found the BN-2 just pretty dull and I know I will probably rarely touch it again.

But to say again, the regret is my fault not the product's.... lack of research and a mindless purchase caused the regret. It's just not for me. But 99% of simmers seem to love it... (and it does have really nice sounds).

Airiane B737-700, the most expensive add on I ever purchased and the only add on I deleted completely and removed and hoped to forget about after a lot of frustrations
