January 14, 201313 yr So I hope they just hold on to the switcher because it seem to work out better than merging those files, unless they make a better tool than ESMerge Quote from John Venema: "The only trick we need to do is trying to find out how to automatically switch autogen textures depending on your global location" Hadn't seen this before now... Seems like they are working on the autogen issue, hope they succed better with that than ES did with their ESmerge tool, then I will buy this FTX global, not for the global textures but to be able to get rid of the switcher alltogheter. Exciting times ahead for us Orbx users.
January 14, 201313 yr Maybe they haven't updated their gallery images? NickN posted some new GEX-screenshots (fromNorway) here today on my request: http://www.simforums...topic44696.html
January 14, 201313 yr Author NickN posted some new GEX-screenshots (fromNorway) here today on my request: http://www.simforums...topic44696.html Problem with GEX is their nature textures. GEX is great for rural and urban areas, but Norway is all about mountains, tundra, glaciers and boreal type forests. Showing the Oslo area is actually showing off the part of Norway that look most like the rest of Northern Europe. The textures ORBX has used for their PNW/PFJ scenery is spot on for Norway. The only real difference between Norway and NW America/Canada is that in North America the trees and mountains are much taller. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
January 14, 201313 yr GEX doesn't decide which textures go where, they just improve the look of the default textures. Landclass decides what textures are placed where and GEX do not supply landclass definitions. Other companies like Xclass and Scenery Tech provide landclass definitions. So you need to blame Microsoft/ACES, Xclass or Scenery Tech for not selecting the correct textures for the part of Norway you are talking about, it has nothing at all to do with GEX. Cheers, Andy.

I know that perfectly well (and am working on a landclass addon review on my blog). I am not criticising GEX for landclass placement (which GEX has nothing to do with), but for the look of their nature/wilderness landclass textures. The screenshots J van E linked to were of an area that is very untypical for Norway, and as such doesn't show textures that are relevant for most of the country. January 15, 201313 yr Unfortunately for Flight1 i will hold out buying all there GEx and UTX add-ons and wait for ORBX. That's at least a few $100 worth!
February 4, 201313 yr Unfortunately for Flight1 i will hold out buying all there GEx and UTX add-ons and wait for ORBX. That's at least a few $100 worth! I can understand holding off on GEX, but there's no reason to hold off on the UTX addons. FTX Global does not handle landclass and vector data which is what UTX is for.
February 5, 201313 yr Tried the Orbx Tasmania freebee, thought it looked alright, didnt find it that exceptional to throw out the upgrades that I had started with. I use this combination of these products to make my FSX smile everywhere I fly, and I fly everywhere. FS GENISIS Scenery Tech Landclass UTX GEX I also use other addons like- Natural World Mikes - Hi Definition Moon AS 2012
February 8, 201313 yr Commercial Member I'm amazed how good this looks! http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/54511-ftx-global-vs-dex-edhk/ (bottom of the page) Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.
February 8, 201313 yr Holy cow! Do people know how to read? The confusion over what this product does and doesn't is just amazing... ORBX World is simply an upgrade of the default graphics in FSX to make it look a tad more realistic and get rid of the desert like textures that covers most of the FSX world, and improve the look of some of the autogen. If I understand scenery landclassing, the bland desert areas of FSX are a specific landclass polygon in themselves. I believe we have been told that landclassing will not be part of it...only textures. So then what can we expect the texture to be for all those remote deserts over the FSX globe? It will be the same result of a vast desert of some "other" texture as Orbx see's fit, that just goes on and on like the deserts do...but just look different (and still unrealistic). They can't get rid of the vast desert regions without changing the landclass poly. This is a cash grab by Orbx to generate operating revenue for their future work. I would not get too excited about free upgrades...how many times can you upgrade a ground texture? It's a $200 makeover, putting lipstick on a pig. I won't discount the 3D lighting however, as these features are always nice to see, but the ground textures....meh. Not worth that kind of money. I'm amazed how good this looks! They look the same...just a different shade of lipstick Do not judge people until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Then at least you are a mile ahead of them when you ###### them off...
February 8, 201313 yr It's a $200 makeover Well, actually... 1. Base Pack, no monthly DLC content, only bug fixes - AU$99.95 | €77 2. Subscription Pack, monthly DLC installed from custom front end app, new landclass, airports and POI's added continually - AU$189.95 | €145 3. Upgrade from Base to Subcription editions: AU$99.95 | €77 So it's a $100 (AUD) makeover. And I have to say that paying 77 euro's to cover the world in Orbx-textures sounds okay to me... I do wonder though how things will look without additional landclass. The subscription seems to give landclass but for what regions...? And when? And is it a year subscription or an endless one...? Anyway, I noticed I've gotten used to the Orbx colors and feel (realistic or not) so for 77 euro's this is a no brainer, really. I do have some Scenery Tech landclass lying around somewhere so that might come to good use. Also curious how it will work with UTX (I own Europe). It's also nice being able to fly out of FTX England without seeing too much difference in other countries. I do also wonder if I will be able to regocnize for instance the Netherlands or Norway, or if everything will look like Southern France...

The basic landclass system is not about polygons, but assigning textures to cells in a pre defined grid. The desert look comes from grass textures that by default are sand colored, when they ideally should have been green - something ORBX will fix. textures are some of the worst mistakes made by ACES, probably because they tried to bite off more than they could chew with FSX. The upgrades are not about textures, so I guess you haven't bothered to read about the product. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
