February 10, 201313 yr With respect to everyone else's point of view about flight i can tell you that with flight i really get that feeling of opertating a airplane . in other words more realistic than any other sim . Image removed as image is no longer available.
February 10, 201313 yr I highly disagree with that. I feel that Flight is more like a game, and less like like the sim. February 10, 201313 yr FLIGHT is still on my heart! It was the first time a simulator caused such an effect on me of being there.... Nothing that I could ever feel when I changed to XPlane, or even when I tried FSX again. Yes, FLIGHT is special!!!! Meanwhile I found yet another pearl! DCS World - it is simply AMAZING! My simulation is these days made up pf DCS World, Silent Wings (a great sim too, unfortunately not much of a user base today...) and Aerofly FS, the last also giving an execellent sensation of being there! Why did I quit FLIGHT - bevcause I require some aspects of flight and systems modelling coherence that are not there :-(, but I amd basically being STUPID about this, because if I forget about those two or three details, FLIGHT is more than worth the use... I will install it next week through Steam, because I had to install Steam in order to get AeroFly FS. I miss the scenery, the weather rendering and effects - unique in this sim! Just one more thing... Of the many tests I ran with FLIGHT I consider two of each aircraft models as being simply the best - the Maule and the Stearman. The RV-6 and the Icon5 are next. Now that I migrated to Win8, and although I have read some users had problems making it run on this platform, I will install and report back here my results. The most wrong option I did when FLIGHT's fate was announced was having uninstalled it and divert to XPlane10, FSX. The best option I did EVER in my simmer life was forgeting about avoiding military sims, and going for DCS World! Aerofly FS complements both, and Silent Wings is simply the BEST SOARING sim ever produced.... But MS FLIGHT has THAT MAGIC, and being a pilot IRL, I have to confess, it is STILL 1st place in that - being there - sensation..... February 10, 201313 yr Just one more thing... Of the many tests I ran with FLIGHT I consider two of each aircraft models as being simply the best - the Maule and the Stearman. The RV-6 and the Icon5 are next. Have you got around to trying the Carbon Cub jcomm. It is simply the best ever. From an old C-150/172 pilot it really has the feeling of being there! Yes the RV-6 and the Stearman are in the run also, but the Cub is just fun with the TrackiR and rudder pedals. Still my kind of flying. People that think flight is more like a game have not ( in my humble opinion) been very deep into it. Sorry, just had to add that. Steve
February 10, 201313 yr I think there are merits to both sides of this discussion. Flight can be just as much of a sim as you wish to make it, or it can simply be a flying game. Personally I've never been a game type person. I've only tried a couple of the challenges and didn't care for them. I use Flight for touch and go practice, cross country flights (which the jobs fit nicely), and general sightseeing. I agree with Steve. The CC is in my opinion the best aircraft in the sim. I almost forgot. I really enjoy the AOTD's. This can be viewed as "gaming" or flying depending on how you look at it. To each his own. Thank you. February 10, 201313 yr Yep, flight was amazing on some aspects. I miss some of them like the shadows from the trees when landing at dawn or the runway threshold coming into view with the dynamic light effect during night flying. Never had feeling so close to flying my RW Piper in any other sim. Flight model was very good and basic instrumentation was sufficient for VFR and even some good IFR flight. PierreP3D when its freezing in Quebec....well, that's most of the time...C-GDXL based at CYQB for real flying when its warming up...
February 10, 201313 yr I highly disagree with that. I feel that Flight is more like a game, and less like like the sim. You don't have to play the game. You can free fly , make your own flight plans.
February 10, 201313 yr with flight i really get that feeling of opertating a airplane I agree. Microsoft even published my comments about it on their official Flight forum. https://news.microsoftflight.com/blogs/news/archive/2012/03/26/favorite-flight-moment.aspx Hi everyone! Hope you had a great weekend! Favorite Flight Moment Today's favorite Flight moment comes from beta tester Hook: My Flight moment came last night. I'd just flown around Maui (with only the default big island scenery) to see what it was like. Looks ok from 10,000 feet. Landed at the airfield at the north end of the big island, changed the weather to Among the Giants for the first time, then took off intending to check out the observatory. During the long climb I was looking at the scenery, thinking how closely the turbulence matched a recent flight as a passenger in a 172 (the pilot let me take the controls for a bit), and thinking about how the automobile-like design of the Icon would make it appealing to real world newcomers. Suddenly something clicked, and for a few seconds at least, I was flying an actual aircraft, not sitting in front of a computer. This wasn't about immersion; I've been immersed in many games. This was about suspension of disbelief. For a few moments, it was total. This never happened in 2500 hours of FSX, and countless hours of other flight sims going back to the Apple 2. I've tried to analyze what caused it. It may be the super-high frame rates. It may be the *lack* of instrumentation in the Icon forcing me to get my head out of the cockpit. It may just be that the reaction of the plane to the turbulence was just right. The graphics are certainly excellent, but I don't think that was what did it. It wasn't until afterward that I compared what I saw out the window to memories and pictures of actual flight. There was just a certain feel that was there, with the only thing missing being the G forces from the turbulence. Anyone can simulate a modern airliner's Nintendo cockpit flying at FL350 on autopilot for 95% of the flight. That kind of thing doesn't even need a flight model. But to make low level VFR flight believable, that takes a real simulator, and Flight has gotten it right. Thanks Microsoft, for giving me the experience of what flying ls really all about. Thanks, Hook! That was a great story and we're really glad to hear you had such a good experience! I feel that Flight is more like a game, and less like like the sim. If all you're going by are the words in the promotional materials, you're right. But if you try some actual flying in Flight, you'll soon notice there's a difference in the flight model. You'll notice it even more if you have any time in a light aircraft, even as a passenger. The good news is, you can do it for free. When I wrote that quoted post, I hadn't even tried any of the game elements yet. I just jumped into the plane and flew, pretty much the same as I would have done with a new aircraft in FSX. I was flying real world procedures as much as possible, which included avoiding controlled airspace (which isn't simulated in Flight anyway) and flying from small airstrips. I had less than 20 hours in Flight at the time, but had landed at all of the runways on the big island, and had done some landing challenges. I was stuck on one of the Stearman landing challenges, and went off to try flying the hoops and gold rushes. Next attempt I aced that Stearman landing challenge, and realized that the game elements were teaching me precision flying. Sure, there is a game involved. But there's a serious sim in there too. If all people had to go by were the promotional materials, they might miss the serious sim aspects of Flight, and that's a shame. Now that development of Flight has been cancelled, it's probably "OK" to give it a try without seeming to support a Microsoft flight sim that wasn't obviously FS11. It's a worthwhile experience. And you can always go back to whatever you were flying before, and no one will condemn you for that. And best of all, it's still free. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
February 10, 201313 yr Yes, you're right I completely forgot about the CC!!!! Actually the last aircraft I bought for FLIGHT was the C46 (I bought them all :-) But the CC was simply great! February 10, 201313 yr I've never stopped using Flight since MS gave up on it, but just recently had to replace my 4 year old PC because of some ongoing hardware issues. With my new system I now have Flight's settings on maximum, and the results are simply amazing. The sense and feel of flying is just that much better, and the graphics are astounding. I'm still disappointed MS gave up on Flight, and still hope that eventually we will have some addon's to increase Flight's enjoyment. I've seen the post about the coming re-paint toolkit; now if a scenery "toolkit" would come along those of us still enjoying Flight would really be in business! Here's hoping we'll have that someday. February 10, 201313 yr Ok, at the end of the day, I am glad to report that MS FLIGHT installed and runs flawlessly on my Win8 Pro 64 bit, with 16GB RAM. Installed through Steam because both the C46 and the Mustang were bought there. I had a series of failures getting the additional DLCs after the 1st introductory mission (The Ballons Mission), but I ended up getting them all, but the game itself, through the GFWL UI that Steam installed itself. Then I took care to save Defender from the burden of verifying the GFWL and Steam folders under Programs(x86), and all went fine the next time I started MS FLIGHT :-)) Did a few bad weather takeoffs (30+ktnot gusting winds) and landings on the CC and C46, and also on the Maule (I love the Maule...). Since I had excellent results with it and both DCS World and SilentWings, I also chose to set a Nvidia Inspector profile for MS FLIGHT. The version I have already includes one and, with all settings maxed out MS FLIGHT shines like never before ;-) I can't say I will get into the Aerocache Fever again, specially because now I am only next to my Sim PC once a week, but I will certainly pick a few challenges, and above all, try a few cross islands / cold Alaska flights... February 10, 201313 yr Commercial Member Flight does require the user to actually fly the plane 100% of the time. Unlike FSX where one only needs to take off and click on the AP until reaching the destination and landing. They are 2 different experiences except that Flight has the more modern engine. Now if only we could get the Flight engine in FSX and have the best of both worlds in one sim. Cheers jja Jim AllenSkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
February 11, 201313 yr Silent Wings is simply the BEST SOARING sim ever produced.... You tried Condor soaring sim? Can you compare these two products? Lj. Prodanovic
