That's max cruise altitude, I'm looking for charts on optimum depending on weight. Also trim setting for takeoff, no idea what to select.

Yes I did, but I was not aware at the time that your post and what Majestic put out were out of sync, and long before that I was already following the sample/tutorial/call-it-what-you-will mish mash from Majestic.

You can try looking at real world flight altitudes from Flightaware.

 

I'm finding myself burning more fuel than I expected. I burned 2500kg of fuel on a 1hr 15min flight, FL210, ISA at near max ZFW, speed VMO -10. (TAS 350 IIRC) Cruise burn for the Q400 should be ~1200kg per hour.

2500 is too much. Make sure the CL are in 850 gate. My Dash eats around 1170 kg/h in similar conditions (585 per engine).

 This aircraft maybe a wonderful prop aircraft, but the minute I throttle down, it goes into reverse. If I push forward, it seems it reaches a point forwards when it just lurches forward instead of a smooth transition to taxi. Correcting this by throttling back only results in going to reverse.

Have a look at the markings on the throttle quadrant... Only throttle back to Flight Idle.  If you go below DISC, you will indeed put it into reverse

 

The step by step process for the FMC is hard to follow with missing info that jumps steps. I can't get the J586 airway inserted and I dont even have the FrankX6 star!

you're right. The Navigraph database changed after the tutorial was completed. The reason why we didn't change the tutorial is that there is Another tutorial flight coming (written by Brendan Ratchford) which is far more complete and accurate. This new tutorial is in our hands but we are still too busy with the release and activation issues, we will review and issue the new tutorial few days later.

 

Looking forward to that. Must be something out there that is a bit more easier to follow.

 

Make sure you calibrate your throttle set up thought the q400 control panel. It takes seconds and you can set it up like a normal throttle set up as to where when you pull your throttle back to idle it keeps the airplane from going out of DSC.

Can someone who knows the aircraft tell me if it's accurate that the engines should be able to start using battery power alone?

 

I just tried starting the engines with no APU/Ground power and it worked fine.

Yes Noah, the Dash is capable of beng started on the batteries alone, however use caution as you have about 1/2 give or take before your batteries will not have enough juice to complete a battery start.

 

For altitude just pick a turboprop friendly one, range of teens to FL300 ish....

Remember that the service ceiling of the Q400 is 25,000 feet.  The aircraft is capable of flying at 30,000 feet but is certified to on 25,000 feet.

A helpful suggestion, Mark, but I've looked that that Control Panel and no matter what I do with my MSFFb2 throttle control, I do not see any figures altering in that Control Panel

Remember to have fsx running with the q400 sitting on the ramp somewhere. I had the same problem but I found out that once you are in the q400, the control panel will pick up your throttle movements. Let me know if this works. I'd be more than happy to help because you are in for a great once his is fixed for you.
