We're cracking the FS9 city texture problem!

Featured Replies

WOW......

Did I say "wow".....

Like I always said, FS9, will never depart my hard drive.....nope!

As soon as somebody writes a 'holding my hand' directive....this will be done like dinner!

One way to beat the system is simply to provide alternative landclass textures where needed! By this I mean adding a texture folder to your landclass layer and filling that folder with custom landclas

The biggest issue to getting the full effect of visual quality with something like this is going to be LOD radius. You can see, even in that tilted close up, that just a few miles from the plane it's turning into a blurry mess.

Can it not be upped through the .cfg to a higher number?

A couple more from Jon. I'm still working on my setup.

You're kidding?  That second image is being caught by FS9 in action?  Jeez.....

If you guys can have this in 'total world', there will be a stampede back to FS9 and how any system of today can crank out the FPS's.....wow. Very exciting to see this unfold...

Wow, this is looking really promising, not quite sure I understand what's going on though (not for the first time).

Am I right by saying...

You have taken FSX landclass textures, resized them to 256x256 and used them in FS9?

Is that what we're talking about here?

How did you get the autogen to work?

This is a great find and I hope we can get some improvements to FS9 with it, looking forward to finding out more,

Cheers,

Ian

P.S. not sure I know of a "FS9 city texture problem" that needs "cracking" but this is a massive improvement.

It's a long time ago that something revolutionary happened to fs9, cause it's time seems to be over.

This project (and so the textures) looks really thrillingly and promisingly. If these are the results when using fsx textures, i wouldn't discuss any other further on - whether it works or it's possible or it might or might not be, cause you got some hard facts and these are your screenshots. They show that it apparently not just works but also accomplishs it's goal to make terrain and cities looking much more crisp than stock or adware textures. The crucial point might be if it'll work the same convincing way for all or most cities and landscapes.

For sure fs9 isn't a up to date flight simulator. The only reason to me not to use fsx is that i've spent a lot of money for adware/addons and also spent a lot of time in tweaking fs9. So, since all these years - step by step, i got it the way i can accept it. If all that fs9 adware/addons out there would apply to fsx, i would perhabs think about it. I don't want to be forced to buy and buy when aiming for simming seriously just to get it a little better than fs9, cause, to my opinion, stock MS flight simulator is still rather rudimentary.

So i would highly encourage you to stay tuned to that project - i'm sure, all the "old-fashioned" fs9 enthusiasts would be very grateful.

If there's any manner i can support you, just drop me a line in this thread.

Just an update on my end:

We for sure can have more detailed ground city textures in FS9. It looks great on my end.... The problem I'm having now is these are FSX default textures and outside of rural areas like pictured above one can tell these are default. GE Pro gives you a city below with parks and baseball fields present. I'd love to see GEX converted over to FS9 as the detail grid look of FSX default city textures will not work for some used to GE Pro. But then you have areas like the last shot above. I may have to buy some third party FSX texture and convert it over to see FS9 really shine. You guys with GEX should try your textures in FS9, you will be impressed.

I do have GEX.  What kind of conversion do I need to do (size, format, etc.)? Thanks.

So how are the guys with GEX supposed to try their textures in FS9 ..... hmmmmm?

By down converting them to 512 X 512.

By down converting them to 512 X 512.

Need input.  I think here's where the lack of a set of instructions is going to cause some heartburn for many interested parties.

Down to 1024x1024.

What program are you using to downsize these textures? Also, does anyone know of a way to downsize multiple textures at once?

What does 512x512 have to do with the price of rice in China?

So cut loose with the secret (if there is one), or is the secret to port the FS9 Skyhawk over to FSX, take some screenshots, and post them as coming from FS9? Frankly I'm seeing some slope texture morphing going on in that last set of screenshots that looks a lot like what I'm used to seeing in FSX. Also I see what appears to be an FSX stadium object in one of those first screens, and some extrusion bridges if I'm not mistaken - there are no extrusion bridges in FS9. I copied 429 textures directly from my FSX texture folder into FS9's and frankly I saw nothing but the usual blurry mess I'm used to seeing in FS9. After that I processed them all with nconvert to 256x256 and saw basically the same exact thing I did with the 1024px textures which is exactly what I expected to see. Sorry for the skepticism, but I ain't buyin' it. I'm calling "FSX".
