More attacks against OrbX by NickN over at Flight1

Featured Replies

Maybe nick is not that confident in his product.  He seems very much afraid of the competition.  I suggest, instead, to try to compete.  TAKE ALL THE GEX REGIONS AND BUNDLE THEM INTO ONE PRODUCT FOR $99.00.  Now that's competition.  I would only buy FTXG to enhance Asia, S. America etc.  I cannot do that with GEX because it's too expensive.

First, we get the "bible," where Nick talks down to the flight sim community with his preaching rants and condescending commentary. And now this. As far as I'm concerned, we're all better off without him.

Not really, he'd have to make it $79 before people even start considering getting it over FTX Global

(I realise I'm sounding a bit like an Orbx fan here, I don't care for them really, it's just quite obvious their product is superior)

Two sides to every story, and Obrx is no saint when it comes to the way the software is setup its known fact.

I agree. I also think OrbX may have been a bit short-sighted and should have had an uninstaller at launch and they could have avoided some of these issues.

That still does not excuse the venomous attacks against a competitors product. I used all the GEX products and followed his original guides and I have lost respect due to his recent posts on the Flight1 forum. I also take away that NickN does not care about that.

Overall, extremely unprofessional on his part.

I guess he never heard of shadow copies, system restore or backup software....

I would wager, most Simmers would not have done any of that.

Actually I have always had a lot of time for Nick and am grateful for his input into the community.

I am also a supporter of ORBX products as they have been a fantastic developer for the Oceania area which matters to me.

His post however has given me something to think about before I jump on the FX Global bandwagon.

Ok so which one do we think is a member of the Illuminati?

Winner wins a package of FScene X .......

People change. When I married my wife the way I saw her then to the way I see her now is poles apart

In a good way or bad way

What Nick needs to do now is get back into GEX and work to make it the best product out there and trounce the rival. Theres room for both products. Healthy competition. Offer us more than FTXGlobal does. Guess what....the consumer wins.  ( I am a GEX user by the way )

Kind Regards

Simon.

Ive just read it and could understand if NickN also produced other scenery that was affected by the changes to the lookup table causing lots of support requests for him as his scenery wasnt displaying correctly etc.

I don't understand why he is so concerned about any changes that FTX makes as users either use GEX or FTX and not both. FTX doesn't affect GEX at all because it completely overwrites it therefore causing absolutely no issues for GEX users as they are no longer GEX users.

If he made an addon airport that then started displaying rock textures on a field then I could understand his concern.

Personally, I haven't read the 'rant' and probably won't bother. I've always found NickN a bit pompous but so what. More to the point I've always found GEX a laborious add-on and irritatingly wanting in some respects. On my transition to P3D only, many months ago, I found myself relieved to break free from it. But this of course is subjective.

With numerous ORBX scenery areas already installed I went for Global for the visual continuity it brings; the convenience of the 'Hybrid' setting; and their promise of ongoing enhancements and upgrades. Sure it's half-baked in quite a few of the areas I've looked at so far but then that's what I expected. It will get better and better - that's their commitment to their customers. My feel is 'we ain't see nuthin' yet.' ORBX is a slick operation with a vision and solid, dynamic management. So I can't see why one would want to 'go back' when we haven't even got there yet. Not at this stage. I agree a straightforward uninstaller should have been mandatory and I'm confident they'll address it.  With my P3D installation on a dedicated SSD drive, and regular full backups (aren't we all at this stage by now, chaps?) for me restoration is not an issue anyway.

I was intrigued with an earlier post that seemed to come right out of left field, referencing a member's 'changing' view of the woman he married!  Perhaps unwittingly he hit on a central issue here. Did his wife come with an 'uninstaller'?  No, he (presumably) made a considered, balanced, well researched life-time commitment based on past and present experience, trust, expectation and 'hope' - for better of for worse. This is how I went for ORBX Global.  If it evolves into something I didn't expect - who's to blame but me?

I accept that some of this skirts around the main issue but hey, it's all grist to the mill. Onwards and Upwards.

I think he should just forget whole FTX Global and try to improve GEX to offer something better or alternatively launch completely new product line.

I am very satisfied with FTX Global, for the moment I have uninstalled GEX and I am using FTXG + UTX.

In my ongoing quest to keep FSL Concorde-X running without OOM'ing, I disabled everything but the default FSX scenery using SceneryConfig Editor.

What I see is far from FSX default scenery, even with all three FTX Global instances in my scenery.cfg disabled. I went into FTX Central and thought I could disable it there. No sir... Except for the trees- and light options, there was nothing to be done.

I will not comment on NickN's form or elaborate content, but he presents three points:

1. FTX Global alters your FSX core files

2. FTX Global does not come with an uninstaller

3. FTX Global cannot be disabled

This is my first Orbx product and if these three points above are correct, I am not impressed.
