April 9, 201412 yr FYI, I HAVE to tweak it using NVIDIA Inspector or it's a jaggy mess, using 8x MSAA. I'm not using NV inspector . . . and P3D2.2 looks and runs just fine. Yes, if I zoom way in on my C-172, there are some jaggies (but who flies like that?). THIS is hardly a "jaggy mess" to me. ~ Arwen ~ Home Airfield: KHIE
April 9, 201412 yr Orbx PNW and KSEA and downtown seattle area was definitely stressing my system but dang it sure looks good ... weather is ASN. Come on SLi/Crossfire build ... I don't know about "stressing" ...seems to be running pretty good on your juiced and beefy system. April 9, 201412 yr Another sweet video Rob. I'm on a 3770k & EVGA 780 ACX. I'm wondering what your CPU use is on those 6 cores. I'm wondering what the difference is to my 4. I wonder things like if the 4 cores are at 66% if that means the 6 cores will be at 100%, if it works that way. In the end, what is the effect of that extra 50% on FPS/smoothness/blurries ... Was affinitymask disabled in this release? I used 254, but didn't see it work that way like I did in <2.1 I am nowhere near seeing max usage like I did with 2.1, and with AF=254 cores were at 80%+. Now I see, with AF,only 3 of 8 virtual cores at 80% (in Resource Monitor), but better performance. I cleared out the directories and put in the patch. Also put in the new NVidia driver. Very happy with what I see, tremendous improvement (over a borked 2.1 installation) but I know I'll need to start with a clean OS for best results. A tip for everyone, and a tip for those with SSD concerns. There is a nice beta test out there for a program named PrimoCache. I have 32GB 2400ghz RAM, and I use PrimoCache to create a 12GB RAMdrive, which speeds up loads tremendously after the initial loading. It also has a level 2 cache which caches any HD files to the SSD, and persists through reboots. So I spent good money on the fastest SSD I could find instead of size (>550/s IIRC). I have about 1.3TB of FSEarthtiles scenery, which I prefer along with a good terrain map, and with PrimoCache's RAMDrive, once I've loaded an area in, everything loads from RAM to RAM, or if not so recent, off of the SSD cache. I also run Intel RST, and PrimoCache works along side it, just as well, but PC allows all drives to be cached, not just one. Also, using Process Explorer, I usually set Priority to High (Never use Realtime. It's not even fun to experiment with it.) It makes a difference. April 9, 201412 yr Where the heck is J Van E?? Here I am! Thanks for missing me. ^_^ I've been busy doing other (far more important) things but just did my very first short flight in v2.2. My findings so far: - cloud shadows are great! However, to really turn the light on I had to enable Dynamic Contrast on my Samsung monitor. I know some people frown upon this feature but after turning it on, the sun almost seemed to shine in P3D! Still not fully and really but it's getting close. Turning Dynamic Contrast off again makes things look very dull, grey, dark and flat. Don't know why I didn't use this option earlier on. - I don't really understand why some disable terrain cast shadows: it's the MINIMUM I would want to have. Without it, the world (mountains) look flat! I have it enabled and set the distance for terrain and cloud shadows to 10.000 and I see no difference in performance at all. The other shadow setting is at 6.000. I enabled all plane shadows, vegetation to receive and buildings to cast and receive. I was able to turn up autogen to Very dense. Performance usually stays near my max of 34. Sometimes it however suddenly dips a little for no apparent reason but after some time performance is up to near 34 again. - I haven't used NI yet. Due to this AA is crap in the VC of the A2A C172. It's quite good however in the VC of some default planes and it's perfectly fine in the outside world. So for now I decided to get used to the shimmering lines in the C172 VC because turning on SGAA in NI really hurts performance. - I sometimes seem to get blurries but I am flying in PNW right now and there are lots of trees there. - VAS. VAS? What VAS? Was there a problem with VAS? Really? Well, not now anymore. Overall I am happy with what I've got, specially since I am getting all this on my 3 year old PC. Knowing I will get a pretty good PC later on this year, makes it easy to live with a few shortcomings or lower settings for now. Of course I only did one short flight but the addition of cloud shadows is a good one (even though the sun still doesn't shine as it does in real life) and the reduction of VAS is great too. BTW I only use AF=15 as a tweak. I like how you now can set the shadow options within the game: no more need for tweaking the shadow disance in the cfg. I seem to need that AF-tweak (together with Vsync and a locked fps) for best performance but I will test what happens when I use unlimited or turn off vsync. It's amazing how much performance I get and how great things are looking without a load of tweaks! I did a complete reinstall btw, using NOTHING from my previous install (so I reinstalled all addons too and I did not use any old cfg or xml file or whatever). And I also installed the latest nVidia beta 'wonder' driver. No idea how much that one helped but all in all performance seems better than with 2.1, specially since I can now use more autogen. So far: very happy! Looking forward though to flying in P3D on my new PC...!
April 9, 201412 yr So far: very happy! Good to hear  There are still wrinkles for sure, but this is pretty good stuff compared to what we had :Applause: When Orbx supply a v2.2 ENG.. FSX is history for me. BTW I only use AF=15 as a tweak I think this works best for me too, and is my ONLY tweak.
April 9, 201412 yr I should also say that while I prefer photoreal stuff, when comes to being close to the ground or landing and takeoffs I'd rather have something realistic from that viewpoint like ORBX's beautiful work. They have some freebies everyone should take a look a now. It looks like P3D2.2 will finally let their work shine. I'd skip a few dinners out every month to add them. April 9, 201412 yr What aircraft are you using? Once you can throw the 777 and/or NGX at it in this same scenario, then let's see how well this works. You could probably do this in FSX too with "light" aircraft. Well I am using the bonanza and granted that is a default Aircraft however their is not a snowballs chance in hell you could do this in FSX on any machine. You would get the OOM before the scenery even got fully loaded and bear in mind that maxed out setting at 10 to 15 FPS is just looking for an OOM. There is no way anyone is running setting for every day flying before they have 3 way SLI with 3 GTX780 at least. So I am pretty sure that on setting that can maintain 30 FPS in any situation which is what I am testing for the NGX or T7 won't pose a VAS problem. I personally believe that those who are having problem are pushing less than the top shelf hardware to hard beyond what it is capable of or don't have a well optimized system or they have not followed LM's Recommendations precisely. I am running it on a i7 4770K at 4.8ghz with a GTX780 and 8 GB 2400mhz CL9 DRAM and my system is highly optimized as per NickN's Guide so it doesn't get much better than that. AS usual your Millage may very. I would strongly encourage anyone who is running FSX and regularly going GRRRRRR. or not to switch to V2.2 today. You have nothing to lose, there is a 60 day money back guarantee. Once we all move to P3D V2 the devs. have to follow. We are the market and the business follow the market not the other way around.
April 9, 201412 yr I personally believe that those who are having problem are pushing less than the top shelf hardware to hard beyond what it is capable of or don't have a well optimized system or they have not followed LM's Recommendations precisely. But see, that's unfortunately where even P3D isn't going to be the end all be all answer. At least for now with P3D, we can finally throw some newer hardware at our sim again and it will perform better. With FSX you can have the fastest system on the planet and you'll still have the same experience. But, in the end even with P3D, we will once again be complaining about VAS at some point in time in the future. And, even now, you would probably not be able to complete a flight across a continent with high quality airports at both sides and all photoreal along the way in the PMDG T7(when it's released). That too would OOM P3D now too I bet. This, for me, is the hardest decision in moving to P3D and it's why I'm still undecided as to what will be my next sim. Yeah, I'd get most, if not all, of my FSX add ons to come with me saving me $$$. But eventually there will be another wall that we will be hitting in x years w/ VAS. It's just a band aid. Albeit a nicer looking/performing one for now. But, to spend the $$ I'd need to spend right now to get a system capable of enjoying the new features in P3D is a hard sell to me knowing that, unless they make it 64-bit somewhere down the road, I'm going to be right back here in this same spot...turning sliders way down, not using photoreal, etc etc. But, we'll see...a new machine is being put in the budget for late this year or early next. By that time, hopefully there will be a better idea of how good P3D can work and stay under VAS or whether XPlane10 .40 or .50 or something will be out giving it all that FSX/P3D has feature wise and more plus being 64-bit. (I know, I can dream, right? ) Hopefully I'm wrong in my thinking here. Maybe it will be possible some day due to new techniques or whatever so we can have a 32-bit flight sim and not have to make the compromises we do today. April 9, 201412 yr lso an SSD will NOT give you ANY better perfromance att all, only a few seconds for loading the sim, so for fps, smoothness etc it´s a waste of money. I'm surprised that anyone disagreed with you on that. P3d is not disk I/O bound by any stretch of the imagination, except when it first starts up a flight and loads everything from files. And I'm saying that having my P3d installation on a high end Crucial SSD. The real improvements in FPS and smoothness come from upgrading one's CPU and GPU.
April 9, 201412 yr Commercial Member I personally believe that those who are having problem are pushing less than the top shelf hardware to hard beyond what it is capable of or don't have a well optimized system or they have not followed LM's Recommendations precisely.Very true. P3D is not flawed, but there is a certain error rate that occurs when human intervention is introduced into a process. REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations

April 9, 201412 yr Commercial Member But see, that's unfortunately where even P3D isn't going to be the end all be all answer. P3D is an ongoing answer. Remember, there is a dedicated team the advances the platform. What we have today will be further enhanced later this year and what is further enhanced later this year will be further , further enhanced in 2015. Basically P3D continues to get gooder and gooder. :Big Grin: REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations
April 9, 201412 yr Do I need any tweeks for the latest release? Or can I remove highmem=1 and affinitymask? Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
April 9, 201412 yr Do I need any tweeks for the latest release? Or can I remove highmem=1 and affinitymask? You never need highmemfix as it is already "fixed". Suggest you try with no tweaks first. In your start menu under LM you will find a list of tweaks suggested IF you need them, but very good results are being found with no tweaks. Sent from my Mobile thing Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict
