Dcs is funded by a uk company... As well, it's notoriously hard to code for and Igor, the guy who runs it, well, suffice to say difficult is putting it mildly...

Frankly, X-Plane10 does not deserve this but it is only to be expected when you throw this kind of software designed for professional use into a PC gaming arena like Steam.

I imagine X-Plane are quite well aware what its doing by releasing on Steam - increasing its sales revenue.

I imagine X-Plane are quite well aware what its doing by releasing on Steam - increasing its sales revenue.

With repect, I think you're mistaken, unless your train of thought is that that sales revenue will be increased by more exposure of the product to potential buyers.

Example - I played several games (and loved them) starting aroung 1997 or so - Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2.  Dungeon Keeper 3 withered on the vine after Bullfrog was purchased by EA and EA let some of the DK staff go, while others were redirected to the Harry Potter series of games.  (Don't anyone start, this isn't about EA)

DK3 has been brought back by Subterranean Games as War for the Overworld, and I am part of the original beta team.  Now anyone can gain access to the beta, and it looks promising, with a Q4 2014 release date possible.

You can gain access either by purchasing a Steam key through Steam, or through a widget which allows you access to all beta operations and gives you a Steam key as well.  The reason for this is that, according to SG, "this widget allows us to make more money for the project versus selling solely through the Steam storefront".  Both the Steam price and the widget price are the same, well, Steam is $0.01 less...

So I would argue, based on this, that without additional exposure to the buying public, Steam's share might be a little on the expensive side.

And your train of thought is that sales revenue will be decreased by more exposure of the product to potential buyers? That's a novel marketing approach.

Is there any inkling as to what this will mean for new FSX activations?

I'm currently running FSX on a laptop, but am in the middle of procuring all the parts for my custom build.  Once that's done I have a brand new FSX Gold in the box ready to install on the new system.

Does anybody know if this licensing deal with DoveTail could potentially prevent me from installing/activating my brand new, legally purchased software?

Regards,

Corey

Because one cannot assume that everyone has English as a first language, please allow me to say it again:

The use of "unless" generally means that if that is your premise, then I agree with what you are saying.

Hope that clarifies what I said.

Unfortunately nobody has any idea what will happen to existing FSX activations yet. This is the news we're all waiting to hear.

I would think that since I have a legally purchased copy that was bought before this deal they should not be able to legally stop me from using it.  However, the law is not my area of expertise.  Here's to hoping I'm right though!

Obviously no one can stop you using what you legally purchased. The questiom is whether about the validation servers. I can legally buy a car but the manufacturer is not obliged to provide spares for ever.

Gerry Howard

However nor is that manufacturer going to stop you making your own spares (at no doubt enormous cost), or extracting them from wrecks, or using generic alternatives to keep the car you purchased running.

That is true in principle although not in reality. Airbus prevented Concorde flying by handing back its Type Certificate.

But without the validation servers we won't be able to use it.  I guess we just have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, if I was Dovetail I would be looking to soak up ex-aces employees like a sponge.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

There are ways available now to bypass activation. Should the activation servers be taken down in the future I'm sure folks will find a way to cope.

...and as far as I'm aware none of them are legal.
