FSX Steam Edition Update

Now that it is thawing out a bit, one must remember that not all developers are as responsive as Pete is with FSUIPC.

For new installs, we now provide default versions of dll.xml and exe.xml files to improve compatibility with existing addons.

What are they referring to with default versions and existing add-ons?

Sounds like the DLL.XML and EXE.XML files as installed by FSX:SE, probably had some sort of minor internal formatting difference when compared against the FSX:MS files. Some installer files which "read" these files probably got tripped up by this and it borked their installation routines. It appears they are reverting any of those changes they may have made so that the DLL.XML and EXE.XML files are 100% identical to their original cousins when FSX:SE is first installed, thus improving compatibility with installers sensitive to this.

Since those two files can be deeply customized by your individual installation, they probably either can't or don't feel comfortable with applying any changes to existing FSX:SE installations... which is why it is something that will only affect new, fresh installs.

It's exciting no doubt, but remember that with every bugfix, change, and update comes the potential - the very real potential - that your addons (above and beyond FSUIPC) might have a hiccup or two.

Let us not forget that one of the BENEFITS of the years long development freeze on FSX has been a singular, stable codebase on which developers could rely. Now that it is thawing out a bit, one must remember that not all developers are as responsive as Pete is with FSUIPC. This is not to suggest that such changes are BAD, but it's just something to keep in the back of our minds.

I'm curious how an in-place "update" via Steam will be handled by FSX:SE. It seems straightforward for a relatively clean installation, but what about installs which have been thoroughly customized by their users... There are some interesting times ahead!

Definitely a good point and one I've considered. I hope developers continue working to keep their products alive.

I wonder if opting into 'newbuild' in Steam gives early access to some updates (which is certainly the case with some games) I have the 'newbuild' option selected an got an update when I started Steam a little while ago today.  I'm currently on build # 10.0.62607.0 (FSX .20141212-2206) and assume these numbers change with each update?

For me the Steam version has performed roughly on par with the the boxed edition, and is still some way behind P3D2.4 in heavy scenarios... I do enjoy using both sims however, and like FSX for particular conditions over P3D.

I'm on the fence on FSX:SE, but as I'm now officially traumatised by stutters in P3Dv2 I'm more and more tempted to give Dovetail a chance. What have they said about developing FSX further, is this possibly a P3D competitor in the long run? What I would give for a butter-smooth flight right now... I'm desperate

RE: DLL.xml and EXE.xml, just like Microsoft, the Steam version doesn't create those files at install.

I suspect this update will now include those files in new installs so people can more easily use their already installed FSX-MS addons.

Joe

I haven't started FSX-SE since the day I installed, the day it was released, and my version is the same as yours.

I suspect that FSX .20141212-2206 is the date of the compile or release, December 12, 2014.

Joe

If you have an nvidia card you can enable the 1/2 refresh rate in nvidia inspector. Dial the scenery in to not drop below 30 fps FIRST, so try around 45fps, then set the 1/2 refresh and set your fps in the sim to 30 and it will stay butter-smooth.

Thanks for the info Joe... I have just checked the date stamps on the files within my FSX-SE install and the only files with todays date is the 'Log' and 'Multiplayer.dll'. So it seems I did get an update, but only for the multiplayer component.. which I don't use.

Thx Pete, yes, FSUIPC is really important to have too  :good:

IMHO not just 'important'...but ESSENTIAL!  :)

Thanks so much Pete, FSUIPC and WideFS is mandatory for my network system!

I'm still holding until all the addons i use work correctly with FSX: SE, then i'm moving in. Can't say no to improved smoothness ;)

While I'm loving that FSX is being updated again, I'm a little bit skeptical about the upgrade process.

Are we going to have to update ALL our add-ons every time there's an update to FSX SE? I don't see how this will work.
