July 15, 201510 yr Commercial Member Me to!,would like to know where they plan to end up!,maybe they will go on for ever just slowly improving P3D,I have never worked for business that does not have a final target in mind Check post #96 - makes a lot of sense to me. If P3D is a marketing gig, it does not require goals or targets, it does not even have to turn a profit. It is not a product in the real sense but rather like the company website or an ad in the papers. It has a budget and has to stay within those limits. Viewed from this angle even the licenses make sense - middle- or over aged home simmers are in no way the focus group. But young people or professionals definetly are... Sadly, this would also mean that the project could be shut down without even a days notice. LORBY-SI
July 15, 201510 yr I have never worked for business that does not have a internal target in mind Lockheed Martin probably does have a target but 's none of your business? Gerry Howard
July 15, 201510 yr Any of the niche market sims could be shut down at the drop of a hat, just the way Microsoft shut down Flight.
July 15, 201510 yr Commercial Member Is Prepar3d a niche market sim? You're right, this isn't even a niche. Might as well be called "custom" software. LORBY-SI

Or Windows itself? P3D is a base program for many different uses. For example, RedBird uses it in their simulators for GA training. As long as customers exist, LM will keep updating and improving it with time. Check post #96 - makes a lot of sense to me. July 15, 201510 yr Why all the worry? FSX:MS is gone, FSX:SE/LM P3D is the replacement. Enjoy what you have... B)

Even if they sold 10 million academic licenses, it would still be less than 1% of their annual income as a company. With at best a couple of thousand copies sold, why even do it, I wonder - if not for PR reasons? LORBY-SI
July 15, 201510 yr What else? Even if they sold 10 million academic licenses, it would still be less than 1% of their annual income as a company. With at best a couple of thousand copies sold, why even do it, I wonder - if not for PR reasons? Because they make big money on training products, the sort of thing that we would never get near. Having an in-house image generator/sim engine that they can (cheaply) bolt onto more detailed simulations (AeroWinX style) built for big bucks makes good sense. Take a look at the few available shots of the $80m C-130J MATS. If you zoom in on the product card images, the runway visible through the windows will be rather familiar, even if the rest of the sim is probably completely custom. Why make it public? I put my thoughts down here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/462075-lockheed-martins-real-target-market/page-7#entry3180715 and I have seen nothing to dissuade me from that. In summary, bit of PR, bit of cash, bit of testing, but mainly it gives them extra shiny shiny (in the form of addons) that helps strengthen their commercial offering.
July 15, 201510 yr Check post #96 - makes a lot of sense to me. If P3D is a marketing gig, it does not require goals or targets Makes absolutely NO sense to me ... no goals and no targets ... sign me up for that job! And let round 6 of wild speculation begin ... "marketing gig" that's a new one so you get a +1 for creativity. Anyway, back to testing Cheers, Rob.
July 15, 201510 yr I chose my words carefully ... I'm testing a lot of things concurrently and can't comment on any of them ... not even what they are and who they are for. But this is a speculation thread so thought I'd just spice it up and see how far it goes ... Cheers, Rob.
July 15, 201510 yr A diplomat as always Rob...please add a dash of spice to the pot whenever possible

Awesome post Rob How I Evaluate Third Party Sim Addon Developers Refined P3Dv5.0 HF2 Settings Part1 (has MaddogX) and older thread Part 2 (has PMDG 747)
