Apparently many fellow simmers expect a certain amount of verbosity and become upset when one rations one's words too much. :unknw:

Verbosity is the unnecessary use of words for their own sake. Using more words than might be strictly required to convey the raw information, but which help clarify the tone of the message,  is called good communication. I've seen more than one rudeness fan try to dress up their vice as a virtue. They're not kidding anyone but themselves.

It's all about typing exactly what you would say face to face to anybody. Similar to liquid courage, hiding behind the internet makes most people (moderators and website owners included) more brave than they are or should be, and they make comments that they would never say face to face.

Your first point is well taken.  A few years ago, i was handed a pamphlet at my job that outlined proper email etiquette. At the time, this was before the sudden surge in online communications, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.  In it, it outlined ways to communicate via email that would be courteous, respectful, informative and professional.  granted, this pamphlet was geared more towards the business end of email, but the concepts were something that could be used anywhere at any time.  Since that times, people vocabulary has been shot to hell, their ways of communication have been lackadaisical at best.  Society seems to have adopted the mantra of "I want it, and I want it now", not to dissimilar to young children wanting a new favorite toy, thinking that it'll be served up at the speed of light with no consequences.

I was born into a generation of innovation and unfortunately, we have corrupted not only our own generation but generations to come by alienating each other from physical social communication.  I can't tell you how many times I see people slaved to their smartphones, typing away, slowly losing their grip on the reality that surrounds them.  They are so engaged in the digital world that when they are faced with a situation, in real time, real life, with real humans to face them, they are lost, not knowing how to interact.  We have effectively become another person online, which is rather easy these days so we wind up leading two lives, one in the physical that is lost, while the other being digital, we can be whomever we want, without a care in the world of whatever consequences that may come our way because we can just "invent" our way out of it.

Not to get too much off track, I think the digital lives of many, paint a rather ugly picture of their bleak existence.  You can't read any news these days without being subjected to the harsh reality that we no longer coexist in the physical.  What we see of human beings is just a shell, with the minds contained within as a world of negative emotion, precipitated by loneliness.

As I have said before, recent revelations I have had concluded that there is only one way out of this: subvert the dominant paradigm.  This is why I don't engage in social networking.  Call it self preservation if you will, but I look at it as that I want to hang on to as much reality as possible.  The world is a huge place once you open your eyes and really take a good look.  Behind every word spoken, IS a human being.  As a child I was always told to treat others as you would want to be treated.  When I see people acting in such a negative way, it is a huge turnoff for me to want to engage in conversation with them as it would be an exercise in futility.

What a simple concept that is, yet one that is all too often ignored. :sorry:

The way that some denizens of the internet behave towards others often gives rise to the feeling that they are actually wanting to receive a beating... :LMAO:

Some sites have actually disabled some of their forums or turned off comment sections due to a lot of people misusing them.

Just so we are clear, I didn't create another response to bump this topic, although it's probably not a bad idea.  i did some stats on who responded to this thread as opposed to the page views.  Yeah, the page views tipped the scales, which isn't surprising...just another disgruntled member spouting off nonsense...don't worry, I'm used to it.

Those whom we spoke of earlier, continually badger, nitpick, and on the whole degrade others without regard to respect, or as my old TI once said "A blatant disregard for their fellow man" (no offense Poppet).  My point is, those who have this pattern of behavior never came here to say one word, but I suspect they were part of the random pageviews crowd.  When I first wrote this thread, I thought to myself "hey, if I don't get any replies, that's fine but if I get page views, then perhaps I will get through to some of these jarheaded nincompoops."

Obviously not, they continue and I seem to be a magnet for them.  What happened to the core principle behind a forum?  Sharing ideas? Sharing useful information?  Am I even getting remotely close?

I find it extremely difficult sometimes, shrugging off those who choose to constantly offend and publicly make others look bad.  So they have thousands of posts, does that make them an authority?  Should they be looked to as a God in the community?  I have found, that most of those whom I trust with the information they convey, are ones with low posts, obviously because when they speak, they have something to say that is useful.  Post #50, from magnetite, made a good statement "I try to keep everything I say as constructive as possible"...I couldn't agree more.  Unless the thread is completely off-topic, I try to stay objective, subjective, unbiased and helpful.  These Grade A homegrown fruit loops out there with noting better to do than berate others and crash a productive conversation need to take a long hard look at themselves, wait about an hour so they can catch their breath from laughing so hard and then come back to rejoin the land of the intelligent.

There really ARE members here who aren't in it for the post count, but here to help others.  Keep that in mind.

Jim,

This type of thing takes time to settle into people's minds. There will be a small percentage of fundamental behavioral changes of those whom you speak, the change you're looking for is from others who will eventually advocate for those who get banged up and bruised in the community.  It takes a village isn't limited to raising children.

Long term change of the community is what we're looking for, and that will take time.  I wonder how many times a new user comes here, reading posts without posting themselves and wrongly pick up that it's cool and/or acceptable to hammer people who are less knowledgeable.  The community can change that.

If one responds/defends someone getting hammered, it's so very important to be extremely polite and respectful, even kind, else we risk things becoming what we'd like to stop in the first place.

On the other hand, maybe a big, huge, (yellow smiley face) and "Have a Nice Day" at the top of the AVSIM front page would better invoke the change many of us would like to see. :P

Ironic that the original poster starts a thread about this subject of the community, then Jon_aus comes along and posts a comment that has since been deleted by the mods. I don't understand that type of behavior by some people and Jon_aus. Why the need to make condescending remarks when people just want a peaceful community?

Well, I suppose after donating a significant amount of money to the forum (yes we noticed) you feel it's OK to call fellow members jarheaded nincompoops and Grade A homegrown fruit loops  without feeling at all hypocritical.

I happen to agree with a lot of what you have to say but you really don't need to throw insults around to make your point.

Me, I just press the report button and let the real mods deal with it when I think something crosses the line.

If the OP can call other members "jarheaded nincompoops" and "Grade  A homegrown fruit loops" then other  members are entiled to call you what ever they like too.

Well sure, if they also apologize for the lapse, and promise not to repeat it, which I suspect the OP will gladly do.
