I worked in Fleet Service. We're the guys who load the planes. The 190's were not built to be a mainline airplane. They are really just a large commuter jet. The forward cargo bin is very long and narrow with a low ceiling. Trying to stack luggage in that thing was like a deathwish. We used to call it the flying occupational injury. The Embraers 170/175/190 were terrible when they first came online. The computer systems would crash regularly, requiring a reboot. We called them POS 180's. POS... piece of sh**, 180 referred to you pushing it back and it doing a 180 and returning to the gate with a mechanical.

Not unique to the 170/190 though. Other Primus Epic systems such as Gulfstream's PlaneView, and Dassault's EASy, are similarly temperamental about the way various systems are brought online at power up. Usually cured by rebooting the entire aircraft!

Jim, you hit the nail right on the head. The other thing was, if you started the APU incorrectly, it would cause the RAT to drop. One of my co-workers did it three times. Needless to say, management was less than pleased.

Yikes! Endondonist, huh. Well, someone's gotta do it :mad:   Seriously, I've had my share of root canals and I sure felt a lot betterafterward...

When AVSIM came on the web in 1996 I decided I needed more time to read the forums. So, I retired the same month and haven't looked back. My last job was IT Director for a large telecommunications company.

Your name sounds familiar to me!  Are you the same Kerry Gipe that created a Gulfstream back in the FS5 days?  I really liked that airplane back then.  I also thought that FS5 was approaching "as real as it gets" (Ha Ha).  We would have been amazed back then at what we have now for flight simulation programs.

Wow, you have a great memory. That was a loooong time ago. I agree, we would be shocked at what we have today. Imagine what we  will have 10 years from now.

I'm a Systems Engineer for an A/V Event Technology company here in Las Vegas. My main responsibilities are prepping broadcast camera packages for our show techs in the field.

You're young enough to start, but only just.  I wouldn't wait much longer.  Presumably you've saved enough as a CFO to start this expensive process.  But good on you for doing it!

I'm also 35, well established on a very good career path, but if I could pass the medical (I can't) I'd drop it all in a heart beat to become a pilot.

Yeah, me being 37 I sometimes think to myself that if I could get another go at life and start over I would definitely seek a career in aviation.

 

Now it's too late for that, I'll just have to settle with what I've got. 

 

 

EDIT: This really is a great thread! Lots of great different careers in here indeed.
