Being an Indian, as embarrased as I am to admit the following, I don't find it at all surprising to read some of the experiences mentioned above. We, like several other nationalities, have the educated and the less educated. Most of the Indian and Pakistan sectors that EK, EY, FZ service are in a major way to facilitate the huge number of migrant workers that are brought in because it's financially viable to do so. If you've flown with any of the Middle Eastern carriers on sectors outside of India, Pakistan or the likes then you have a completely different opinion to the level or service or involvement of the cabin crew back in cattle class. As a result, you get a lot of people who probably have never experienced being in an aircraft before and therefore draw conclusions or follow suit by looking at others. This leads to the 'let me be the first to get my bag as soon as we touch down because...well, why not?' scenario as it only takes one person to make it a trend. In a way, I'd take such stunts as far less damaging given that there have also been reports of emergency/over-wing exits being opened up during various phases of the flight in other countries.

On several occasions, while traveling as a passenger with these operators, the passengers next to me have requested a translation of what the cabin crew might be asking them (funnily enough, it's always been during the time when food and alcoholic beverages are being served and these guys want a good chunk of the foreign and/or expensive brands). It doesn't help that the safety announcements are only in English and Arabic, making the less educated folk unaware of what is being said which may lead to the kind of behavior you see during a frantic evacuation or the aforementioned scenario. Still, I suppose there are those that want their 15 minutes of fame so recording videos, taking images and posting it all online for that temporary glory is all the reasoning they need.

The comments on Indian's behavior is not totally unfair.. I am of Indian origin and I too get mad when many (not some) Indians on  flights in the west would behave normally for the most part and would not get up as soon as the plane lands, would get up if the touchdown is in India.

I used to fly singapore airlines from the US to India via the far east and then singapore and thence to India. All these aiports, Indians would behave as expected...but soon as the plane touches down at one of the Indian airport they would get up.  Its got nothing to do with connecting flights or even ones education... It's an attitude. "This is my country and I will do what I want and I can get away with it".

This is not uncommon... I suspect many Indians believe. its their country and they would not get arrested for these "crimes". The main culture in India is anarchy. Often mistaken for "liberty'.  Yes I said it. It needs to be said.

Excellent posts, Karan & Manny. Puts into perspective what I watched in amazement on that Air France, and later on an Air India flight too, upon touching down on Rwy 27 at Mumbai.

The thing is it is difficult and quite unfair to generalize. I took some interior flights in India mainly between Vishakapatnam and Mumbay where the passengers just reacted "normally". No such thing as people getting up during the taxi-in or else.

Same in China between Hongkong and Shanghai. So I would be careful before say that it is a matter of nationalities. I thing it is more a matter of conditions and situations or maybe portions of countries if you like. But saying "Indian" or " Chinese" or whatever are like must carefully considered before being said.

On a side note, curious how a topic about a crash can turn into a discussion about this matter.

Its really very simple...if they can get away with that behavior, they would continue doing it... if we put their face on social media and that translates to some sort of punishment or embarrassment, it may discourage such behavior.

In the case of Dubai, all the people who brought their suit case should either  be fined or arrested and questioned for a couple of days and their phtos published all over India. That would be really helpful.

I am of Indian origin

For some reason all these years I thought you were of Hispanic origin. I guess because of your user name. I'm friends with lots of Indian people and greatly enjoy the food and culture, but don't know any that go by Manny, know many Ravis though. I also know a lot of Latinos and a few that go by Manny, hence the reason I thought tou were Hispanic. That's cool to know.

Jim, my brother is Australia is best friends with a ex-Uni friend of his, an Indian, also called, Manny.

This isn't just a "uneducated Indian" or otherwise problem.  Let's not forget that plenty of (one assumes) English people collected there bags and were rightly criticised for it; during the evacuation of the BA 777 at Las Vegas.

My belief is that it's a perception problem, the passengers know that there is a problem, but once the doors are open they believe that the problem is over, or at least the 30 seconds it takes to get there bags will not make there escape any more problematic.  They don't factor in the other 300 people taking 30 seconds.

I think the only way to fix this is to stop passengers taking carry on bags.  You can only take what you can carry in your pockets.  Only exceptions would be medical requirements.

Idiots getting their phones out and start filming when they should be hell-bent on getting off the aircraft. Manchester 1985 has obviously not registered with many.

What words are uncivil? The moderators don't share your opinion. I can confirm I'm over 21.

So, it is okay to jeopardise other passengers blocking the aisles while they stopped to collect their hand luggage, waste valuable precious time filming, when they should have been heeding the flight attendants' advice and evacuated immediately?

I'm sure there were better ways to express your opinion without being blatantly racist. :-( It's not fair to blame an entire nationality for something like that.

You're out of order with the racist accusation. I said "passengers". No mention of nationality.
