Has anyone moved from FSX to Xplane?

Featured Replies

Awesome video, awesome! Well I've had X plane now for a couple of years, came over from fsx and not missed fsx, fsx is old news. I bought the ixeg 737 and it blew me away, myself personally I find it more immersive than any other aircraft, I think it is fantastic as I do X plane, the weather isn't great but you get used to it and it will get better for sure, its defo worth having it installed. Cheers

Yes I do, it does improve the weather for sure but it's no were nears as good as active sky, but you know, ....you can't have everything, I'm certain the weather engine will improve as time goes on.

On the other hand, the DC-6 on XP is the best version on any platform.

Which are other platform at this time Sir ?

I have been simming since I got my first pc in the nineties.

My greatest push to switch from FSX was that I got tired off being hooked in Microsofts ecosystem, I like to gradually upgrade my pc over time, and I am (was) still stuck with windows Vista (Ultima). I had no desire to spend again money on the next version of windows (at the time Windows 8, which was hailed as really bad) and decided to go full Linux instead. So the choice was limited.

I am a scenery flyer, I couldn't care less about procedures, and flight gear does not cut it for me (maybe it improved?), so I had another look at X-Plane.

What I do not miss about FSX:
- the blurries, even with 8GB of RAM and a GTX 650, I still got blurries in FSX (I was running an older mainboard / CPU at the time)

- the stutters

- OOM

What I hated about FSX (yes, shoot me) are the chalk roads like they are drawn with a pencil, and the plastic waters.

What I do miss: the skies with nice towering cums.

But, I do find that skies in real live rarely look like that.

In fact, the X-Plane clouds are pretty accurate for where I live, even they could be a bit less fuzy to my taste.

With photoscenery, OSM data and some clever dataref changes, X-plane is not the dull place some people here seem to suggest.

In the end, both are valid simulations, allthough FSX (and probably P3D too) is showing its age because the lack of 64bit and graphic cards support.

The developers get a lot out of it because they know the platform very well by now, but it costs you a small fortune. And in the end, it is aging.

On the other hand, X-plane is still evolving, I have seen it changing from version 10.00 to 10.50, and I assure you, it is not the same beast anymore.

Then we expect Laminar to announce X-plane 11 next month, with a lot of improvements in the lightning and scenery department.

So no, even if there are some things I miss from FSX, you can count me in the X-Plane camp for the time being.

I forgot, there is a demo download you can try before you buy.

JustFlight makes one for FSX/Prepar3d, and there are others. The Xplane version is superb and with the AFE the learning curve isnt bad.

Shhh...P3D...

The chalk roads and blurries are still happening in P3D.

The city autogen is smarter in my opinion in Xplane.

P3d now offloads a significant amount of the graphics to the GPU and for me, with a modest system, this had made a huge difference. I suffer no stutters and get FPS in the 20-30 range which given my system is not bad. I run the NGX,AS16, EZdok and Orbx openLC and this is what I get at KSEA, which is a good test. I have stayed away from Vector and Orbx regions because of FPS issues but I am tempted.

Heres my system: AMD FX6300 oc'd to 4.3 (yes I know!)

GTX970

500MB SSD

I have tried that X Plane demo so many times.....but simply cannot get past that control input screen. By the time you've set up a few basic controls (or at least, you think you have) the initial 15 minutes is up so you have to reload. Then you find that the inputs you thought you had saved actually haven't so you do it all over again....by which time your 15 minutes has ended....again. Rinse and repeat.....

P3D has now been my sim of choice for about 18 months but I must say that given the choice, and particularly with night lighting, I might well favour X Plane. But then, with the possibility of P3D going 64 bit and with its familiarity perhaps I should wait. And in particular if X Plane 11 is not too far away....

Aaargh. Decisions, decisions....

Cheers,

Geoffrey Easton

Just my opinion , I never went back to FS9 / FSX once I had XP10 installed don't have P3d or ever intend to unless something changes , the first thing I did was get the HD Meshes , if you flying in NA / Canada or Europe and now Japan and the Himalayas you will greatly appreciate these meshes.

XP10 is great for VFR flights.

You will love the way mountains show up in XP and with the added Meshes it will be way better. I love Bush flying and these meshes make a great difference

What I really like about XP10 is the usage of OSM though it also depends on the coverage and what apps are available to create the data like W2XP it's very good.

All above are freeware / donationware.

These are a must have , I am more of a day fliyer or dawn but I still love the road lights at night.

There are a lot many freeware as mentioned in this post like Mr.X's stuff and a few others

I stopped using RTH I could never get the closets settings  to realism.

The other thing is if you like helis then this is the sim want to get for Civil helis else DCS. Or Dodosim for FSX.

The weather it is stupid, ground handling yuks , I love flying in thunderstorms but in XP10 it is not that great as FS9 / FSX.  Though I did reinstall FS9 / FSX for a few months due to the system limitation but I removed them and now only use XP10 / DCS on the same system.

I do agree about the textures but not everywhere I think, with the Meshes it looks so much better.

The sims you like or don't like are personal choices so try the demo though only 15 minutes but you may just get an idea what XP10 is about.

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

LOL, well done.

However, I get no blurries in P3D v3.5.

I was using FS2004 and FSX until, I think, 2009 or 2010. Then I bought a Mac mini and X-Plane 9 was running natively on it. So I changed to X-Plane. Later, I changed back to a Windows PC, and while I tried to get back into FSX, I soon noticed that I liked X-Plane more. I also had invested more money in it, I knew how it worked, I loved its portability and some other things. So I stayed with X-Plane, and nowadays I'm so involved with it and with developers for X-Plane that going back to FSX or P3D is nearly impossible.

I also have a P3D academic license, and P3D is for sure a great software, but I very rarely use it. It's too cumbersome for me -- just the idea that I can't simply move scenery folder and aircraft folders to a directory, but instead have to install them, or if it's manual installation, things have to go to different folders instead just one folder per aircraft or scenery... that I can't simply move the whole folder to an external HDD and move it to a different computer...

You can get both sims up to a very good level with addons, the difference is a question of price vs effort. With X-Plane you can have very realistic scenery for free but you have to put in the work to find, install or generate it. I love things like ORBX scenery and their airports, but I don't like it when I want to fly over my home town as it's so obviously fake looking. I have photoscenery and OSM scenery for almost all of Europe (In the UK you can have incredibly accurate scenery for the entire country for free http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/34232-gb-pro-v2-detailed-vfr-scenery-for-great-britain/  Warning shameless self-promotion ;-))

For the sake of £60, the price of two or so FSX addons, you can just install X-Plane and have both installed like lots of us do. You won't need to uninstall FSX, just use both :-). As Mario mentioned, X-Plane is nice and portable and you can essentially place it on an external drive or move it around without issues.

As others have mentioned though, the weather and ATC depiction in X-Plane leaves a lot to be desired and is something we all hope to see improved in XP11.
