September 19, 20196 yr https://news.sky.com/story/thomas-cook-seeks-last-ditch-fire-sale-in-bid-to-avert-collapse-11814043 Whist the primaddonas at BA complain about one of the best contracts in the world, I wonder if the nigels will spare a thought for the 9000 staff at TCX about to get axed. Looks like their well in the poo poo this time. No matter how you look at it the low end travel agent /tour operator market in the UK is dead The German and scandi market was always propping them up for the last 15 years The days of Tony and Gordon paying out loads of bennies to the poor for them to spend on cheap holidays to marmaris is over. You got easyjet and Ryanair to thank for killing off that market I imagine the ceos, coo and pwc are trying to work out how to sifen as much out of it as possible. Before it collapses on Friday. September 19, 20196 yr Moderator That's sad about Thomas Cook. A link from that article led me to read about the theft of an 18carat gold toilet from Blenheim Palace's art exhibit. I was going to suggest a possible suspect for the theft, but I read further that it was already offered to my suggested person and he apparently declined. How odd though that it was a "working exhibit" and visitors were allowed to actually use it! Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

September 23, 20196 yr And it's all over the wires in the last hour that Thomas Cook has now officially ceased trading. 150,000 British citizens will need to be repatriated after being stranded abroad by the closure. September 23, 20196 yr A number of banks are holding the suffocation pillow over Thomas Cook's face, including RBS. It's a bitter irony that about 60% of RBS is still owned by the taxpayers after the Great Recession bailout 10+ years ago. And the estimated cost of repatriating all the stranded travelers is £600M... which no doubt the taxpayers will get stuck paying for. But the banks will get their money... which the banks always do. It all lends credence to the old reality that the only thing better than robbing a bank is owning a bank! Greg

But then again, it's the usual cry-out when these sorts of things happen... 😕The 'Big-Bad-Corporation' is always stepping on the 'Little-People'. Of course, it's a sad tendency... No-ones at fault for their own situation! There's always someone else to blame for it. Best regards,--Anders Bermann-- ____________________Scandinavian VAPilot-ID: SAS2471
September 23, 20196 yr Thomas Cooks' main business was selling a product of the 1960's, the package holiday in the Internet era. The writing had been on the wall for a long time. The demographic that still buys package holidays is rapidly dying out and Thomas Cook failed to adapt to the online world. Entirely they own fault as Anders has said. Yet another Kodak story, failing to adapt to a rapidly changing market. Jason E Row Follow me on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/user/JasonRowPhotography
September 23, 20196 yr Just landed into Manchester this morning, had a couple of TC flights follow us in, they understandably sounded downbeat on the radio. After landing the TC flights were being shut down and towed onto remote stands , very sad to see a big row all parked up with vehicles parked behind them so they couldn’t be moved. At least there was a glimpse of dignity this time as the airport had just parked small vans and cars behind the impounded aircraft, when Monarch went they used the snow ploughs ,a most undignified end. 787 captain. Norwegian has been in trouble for a long time. I once heard an analyst say, that if the company had been anything other than an airlines, it would have closed a long time ago... It would be quite a loss though, since they're quite big here in Copenhagen... Best regards,--Anders Bermann-- ____________________Scandinavian VAPilot-ID: SAS2471
