Wow, this seems to have gotten out of hand and off topic generally. I was the original poster and was concerned that major developers were holding back on development of new or planned P3D titles because of the impending release of MSFS.

If this is not the case then that’s fantastic news, and perhaps It was just my perception of what seemed to be occurring.

The thread seems to have taken a nasty tone that was most certainly not intended to start.  To the moderators, please may I request this one as the original poster gets locked before any more angst is caused. I apologise to anyone out there that is aggrieved over its appearance.

I am very happy with my P3D4.x set up and investments in scenery, weather, aircraft etc and won’t be abandoning it to spend a great deal of money all over again and suspect many others will be of the same mind. To the developers out there, please know there is a future in customers like myself who are happy with what you currently have to work with.

I agree with @N400QW that this thread has gone off the rails and needs to be closed.  Whether or not that happens, I'll exit the discussion myself.  However, as a final note, I'd like to address a few quick points for the record.

whether you want to call this "dishonest" is up to you

I didn't introduce the word "honesty" to this thread.  I referenced it in reaction to posts that did.

Based on the PR information provided via public channels, do you see anything that currently suggests this is more than casual?  Have you seen any multi-monitor support, have you seen multi-channel support,

Given the unfinished nature of the sim, this is a straw-man argument.  There's no evidence for the things you cite that would make it serious - but there's no evidence for their absence, which would make it casual  Neither conclusion can be supported by the evidence.  Time will tell.

I have no agenda, but some (definitely not all) of you here clearly do.

OK.

Finally, about PR - I know quite well what it is and would be happy to have a conversation about it. A private channel would probably be best considering how things have gone here.

You can believe this or not, but I'll say again that I have tremendous respect for you and really do value your many contributions over the years.  Of course I disagree with you sharply on may points here but that's the context, and disagreement shouldn't get in the way of respect.  Mine for you isn't changed by any of this. Wishing you all the best.

gamers and not serious simmers

I'm a gamer and don't take simming seriously at all.

However, when I climb into the cockpit of a sail plane I am very serious about it otherwise I might end up dead! 🤣

Edit: And nearly did a couple of times. 😨 👖 💩

Agreed.

It's gotten real easy to slam people hiding behind your computer.

It's everywhere with Twitter leading the way from the top down.

Prior to 1991 when you had to actually speak to someone, if you acted like this, there was a distinctive chance you'd wind up with a mouth full of knuckles. I'm speaking from experience.

Don't forget, some of us are aware of quite a bit more regarding MSFS than just the drip-feed of info, screenshots and videos, but are not permitted to divulge...

Well, I can't forget that which I never actually knew in the first place.  I have no way of assessing the credibility of any of the "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" sidebar chatter.

As an example, I know a guy that recently got into VR big time, and he's very loud and vocal about how great he thinks it is, and how anyone who tries it will never go back to a panel display.  We got into a frank discussion on the topic...I asked him how he managed to read the instruments well enough to fly an IFR approach (because I was unable to do that using the same VR goggle setup).  He admitted that he couldn't...but hey, the experience was just so "immersive" that he didn't actually care that he couldn't read his instruments.  So VR with that gear works for him, but it's a complete non-starter for guys like me that want to go beyond arcade carnival ride fascination and work systems management and procedures in a training or training-like environment.  And having had that discussion, his opinion on VR vs flat panels is tagged as no longer relevant to me.  You have to know your sources.

So words of glory from bloggers who got a sneak peek, or the whispered innuendoes from alpha testers--most of whom have never actually logged a single hour in a complex, high-performance or transport category aircraft--isn't compelling enough that I'd seriously consider forming an opinion (good or bad) on that basis.  There is a group of folks in the community that I have come to recognize as credible, even expert...and until I hear feedback from some of them talking frankly and openly--not in riddles--or have a chance to sit down and evaluate Simzilla for myself, I consider all the heat and light to be just the flashy effects of heavy marketing hype.  Now, I'll grant you that some marketing hype does actually pan out...but I also recognize that those behind the hype are not engaged in it to pursue the interest of simple altruism.

Or to put this more succinctly: "let's just wait and see for ourselves and not drive ourselves nuts pondering the possibilities in the meantime."

I have exactly the same feelings about Orbx TE USA. I was really looking forward to the PNW as TE and I am quite disappointed that they apparently chose to release ever more regions for XP than to port them over to P3D.

It makes me think that they try to make the most money as possible as fast as possible before MSFS turns the TE-series obsolete. I'm not sure if we will ever see more TE products for P3D.

On the other hand if we continue speculating it's as well possible that they know something about P3D V5 that gives them a reason not to develop TE for P3D V4 right now but to wait for V5 instead.

Actually Orbx has really disappointed me personally over the last year or so.  I say personally, because their current direction has made many people happy and I would like to think they are making empirical based business decisions.  That said, I have numerous personal issues with their direction.  I am quite pot committed with them, but I am definitely at a point where not purchasing more and contrasting their current direction against MSFS's possibilities isn't a tough pill to swallow by any means.

Few words about the PR campaign  Half a dozen of videos where the leading programmers present their work, some tens of screenshots, the invitation of several youtubers and bloggers they deemed worthy to be invited in Seattle for a hand-on presentation and a (apparently) rather large alpha testing.

Hardly a Big Brother approach to hypnotize the crowd. And we are mature enough to sort out the obvious hype from the bulk.

A good point but the the sim has already been played by many people including pilots and none of them spoke of a wooden or on rail feeling. But, yes, we will know only when the beast will be in our computers. And I expect a lot of controversies then 😁. In the meantime, I am glad that they try to re-think what a MS flight simulator is from the ground up. This what not the easiest path for them.

ORBX OLC Africa testing now,buy when released , and MSFS will not need any addons it will have everything included built on the legacy FSX so the forum says, and all other sims will die (cough) .

Yeah, back to OP. I also still search for the major developers that shelved P3D. No luck so far.

But i won't be surprised when some MSFS disciples, armed with e-meters, would approach me and invite me for an audition session to join the Asobology church 😉

Joke aside: i'm curious what MSFS will bring and get a look at it myself, but i'm grown up enough to wait and see.

To sum up this thread:

1. Major developers haven't shelved many P3D projects - yet. So the whole discussion seems a bit odd.

2. Some people are fully into P3D and buy addons at the same pace they used to, others don't. What else is new?

3. Lockheed Martin don't seem to care that Microsoft has stolen the limelight with their very successful PR campaign for MFS, and continue to keep their mass user base uninvolved and neglected. No roadmap, no screenshots, no stretching out of any kind... Even X-Plane with their very limited budget does a lot of great (and cheap) PR for their platform.

4. If MFS is anything like the trailer suggest some users will move on and leave P3D and/or X-Plane behind, and some won't. Most likely there will be a few years of using multiple platforms, as was the case for most users with FS9/FSX and FSX/P3D.

What this discussion shows is that the simulator community isn't a community of like minded people. We all use the sim for different reasons, and enjoy different aspects of it, which is why I celebrate that Microsoft is back in the game with a simulator that seems to focus on the one aspects I care about the most, namely realistic scenery. For all those who see things differently, nothing is currently lost. You still have Prepar3D and X-Plane and more addons than you'll ever have time to fully explore.

This  thread has had the merit to open two questions  : the absurd knee jerk reaction of the « P3D addon market is dead » crowd but also the professional stakes behind some equally absurd negative speculations on FS20, the « where you are coming from when posting » issue. I see value in this and don’t see any lack of civility. For most of us, it is not FS20 against the other sims. We enjoy P3D or XP and look very much forward to the new sim.
