P3D v5 versus v4. Worth upgrading?

Featured Replies

I am being open minded about it.

The upgrade fee to V5 is small and since I don't see any other cost worth talking about going to V5 is an option, But until I see AS working properly, PMDG NGu and FSL all with full working version and very little reports of countless crashers then yes I might think that's the time to jump on v5. But intil then V4.5/2 is working perfectly.

The core engine, weather and everything else that's coming with MSFS imo will transform flight simming and I cannot help think P3D v5 was rushed out far to soon to get a start on MSFS. Am sure it wont be bug free but I doubt it will perform as badly as v5 v1, HF1 has.

So lets see what HF2 brings, we should see the NGu and the FSL, probably another HiFi beta, so that's another 2-3 weeks and then have a good look at the state of play.

W10 2004 and the latest driver are now installed, so I would say to anyone wait for a few weeks and then see were V5 is.

We are flight simmers. What is this open mindedness of which you speak?

Lol Alan, I know but some people have heart palpitations if people talk about Xplane DCS like your thinking of cheating on your wife. Let along talk about P3Dv5 and MSFS, the knives come out. lol. I love it when people put down MSFS and dismiss it when it's not even out and every video that comes out blows my mind, like the weather is built on 60 layers....60, AS max is 20 and over 5 is a no no. 60! But the na says love pulling it apart before its even out. I mean why not have V5 and MSFS if needs be.........O I can see some on here foaming at the month for even the thought. lol

I agree that looks very tasty!

My favorite vineyard is also releasing a new vintage this year, but that does not keep me from opening a bottle of last year's vintage with dinner tonight.. 😉

That's why I stick with vintage v4.5. 😀

I've yet to see a convincing argument for upgrading. Plus, I would have to buy a new rig. Spending a couple of grand to enjoy a $50 game? Yeah, that's not going to happen...

You sound like the perfect candidate to be content not upgrading your sim then and staying

As long as simmers go along with this, LM will continue to make money off of a stale engine from like 20 years ago: release a patch, release another patch, charge for an upgrade, release a patch, etc. Where is the wow factor? The killer feature?

Feel like I'm experiencing deja-vu.
The same topics and arguments get repeated time and time again.

- For anyone on the fence about moving to v5. Depending on your expectations from P3D, it's worth the move IMO, but wait for HF2.
You'll get to see other peoples' responses to how the hotfix does / doesn't improve the sim and you'll be able to try for yourself with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

- For anyone on a strict budget and saving only for MSFS. No, it's not worth it in your case. Mainly free updates to add-ons, but not all upgrade paths are cost-free, plus the cost of buying the new version.

- For anyone with a GPU with less than 8GB VRAM, difficult to recommend.
The new Enhanced Atmospheric feature is very heavy on VRAM, as is the rest of the sim with the move to DX12.
If you have to lower the settings and not use E.A., why pay extra to have a very similar experience as in v4? The other improvements are nice to have, not must-have for $60.

I have deleted v4 off my PC and I'm running v5 relatively happily. For me, the performance improvement over v4 when using resource heavy add-ons such as TrueEarth and the QW 787 is worth it.

Not for me -- it won't let me go to build 2004 yet.  Says I'm not ready for it.  Yet I asked myself this morning, "Am I ready for Win10 2004?"  and I answered myself, "yes", but I suppose my hardware, or their servers, are not.

And who are these people here who won't buy MSFS?  I think most people on here will.  We love flight sims.  It'll get bought, and used.

And as for open-mindedness, it is unfortunately a rare commodity in anything these days, it seems.  In the spirit of open-mindedness I will not express an opinion on software that I do not own/run/use.  60 does sound better than 20 though. Looking good.

You always post fiction. It is not a stale engine from 20 years ago. How could it be with all of the advancements? Yes, there are teething problems but just wait until MS2020 comes. MS isn't real good about releasing software without bugs (like Windows).

Mace, you can force the 2004 update even if windows tells you you’re not ready - that’s what i did.

And i agree with your comment on not expressing an opinion on something you haven’t tried. For two months this sub has had a lot of negativity from people who have never tried v5. I don’t see the point of posting over and over about a product you have no first-hand experience of.

I value the negative opinions as well as the positive from those who have flown v5. But if you have not ever tried it, why be so upset at a new iteration  of our favourite sim? Who knows, people might actually like it if they tried it.

My PC won't boot on Window 10 2004 build. Something about the Motheboard/bios combo I have. I have to wait for MS to fix it.

Yes, this is me....sometime late, very late into fall 2020, perhaps a Christmas gift to myself.

I'm finding that there is so much more life out there than endless tweaking, messing about with flight sims.  Very tired of it after all these decades.
