REX Weather Force 2020 for Microsoft's Flight Simulator

Ok, so after some hours of testing, I have to say that this software is unusable, got released prematurely and is taking advantage of the MSFS marketing hype, as many other add-ons.

The software is extremely buggy. For example now, I've been trying to inject the weather for like 15 minutes. It doesn't display the airport that I'm at, it says "injecting", then it says "complete" but the weather is not there. I did everything following the manual, the folder has an exception from the antivirus. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes when I start the software, the loading screen appears and then disappears, software doesn't start. It also crashes very often.

The fact that it's missing a feature to set up custom weather by each element separately is also alarming.

Graphics and sound effects are great but that's about it. For me, at the moment, this is money down the toilet, reverting back to the default weather engine.

Those guys have some nerve, releasing this... thing... as payware. I can understand that new software is missing features, but this doesn't even do its core thing properly.

Hopefully I will save somebody some money with this post.

Not to mention the extra CPU resources needed to run this program in the background and possibly add to the stutters when the weather is injected!

MSFS in reality is still a beta release. There are so many airplane bugs, scenery glitches, live weather inaccuracies, but it's so darn beautiful that we blindly accept all that is wrong with the sim. We justify it by saying that it's still a work in progress and we are optimistic that it will get better.

Or at least that's how I feel.

Same here.

MSFS Premium Deluxe Edition; Windows 11 Pro, I9-9900k; Asus Maximus XI Hero; Asus TUF RTX3080TI; 32GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 3600; 2X Samsung 1TB 970EVO; NZXT Kraken X63; Seasonic Prime PX-1000, LG 48" C1 Series OLED, Honeycomb Yoke & TQ, CH Rudder Pedals, Logitech G13 Gamepad

If i learned one thing from my FSX/P3D and XP days it is that i want far less add-ons from MSFS. I spent too much time getting everything updated and working and not enough time actually flying. I personally won’t make that mistake again.

As someone else said if REX had its own forum much of this discussion could take place there.

All they have to do is ask for one... just saying.

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling. Did you after the weather injection failed, close and reopen the program?

Yes, I restarted the software many times. No reinstall though.

To be honest, I don't expect having to perform such steps to make a payware software developed in 2020 work. I think that the modern technology is past this.

I'll give it a go tomorrow, but most likely will be seeking a refund.

So, after spending some time playing with this myself, and trying hard to glean some useful information from this thread, this is what my current feelings of and understanding about this product are:

  1. It uses some "non-standard" or undocumented ways of interacting with the sim that don't follow the limited SDK currently available.   This can be simultaneously a good thing and a bad thing, depending upon your priorities.
  2. It operates by reading the METARs from airports and interpolating between them.  I don't know what is involved in the standard Live Weather from Microsoft but I would assume that they do something a little more intricate -- and they appear to be struggling with it.  This means that weather at airports may be more accurate using Weather Force, at the cost of less accurate weather between them.
  3. It does not model global weather systems like Live Weather does.  Rather, based upon the METARs and interpolations, it paints the entire world around you with the same weather and then changes it as you go.  Which means basically you're moving through a series of weather transitions but the whole world transitions at once.

If I am incorrect about any of those I would love a correction for clarity's sake.

Now, further observations:

  1. The nature of the method that REX is using for this can be a negative if you're flying high and above the weather, as the horizon to horizon nature of the weather is more obvious.
  2. On the flip side, if you only spend your time in or below the weather the extent to which that is a problem will be reduced.  You still will not be able to see a storm front rolling in on the horizon, though.
  3. The state changes can be GPU (and CPU?) intensive and cause a period of FPS loss as well as redraw artifacts as evidenced in at least one video here.  There is an option to do "instant" changes which will reduce the framerate dip caused by a transition at the cost of making it even more jarring.

Whether or not this is a product that interests you will depend on whether you fly high or low, and whether you are more interested in precision at airports or in the verisimilitude of a global weather system.   If you are particularly risk-averse you may also be concerned about the method that Weather Force is using to interact with the sim.  On the flip side, if you are very interested in one of the features -- like the dynamic fictional weather conditions which are currently unachievable at all with the stock weather system -- you may be willing to live with its other flaws to get whatever the USP is for you.

Beyond that it also seems to have some bugs which can be expected of any newly released product, especially one that's being clever with the way it interacts with the sim.  I am sure those will be fixed over time.   Either way, it's only USD22, which will hardly break the bank for someone who thinks they might be interested in one of the features it has.  I bought it because it seemed to fill a particular need I had, for the dynamic fictional weather, and the cost was small enough to take a gamble.   YMMV.

Does that all seem fair and accurate?

Yes I see is it real time or time lapse ? Looks like GPU has problem rendering

It would help if people would enable the frame rate display in MSFS developer mode when linking this kind of video. Then we'd know if it's GPU crunch or something else.

The camera pans and slight aircraft motion looked fairly smooth with no stutters, so I suspect the CPU/GPU wasn't working very hard, and its a glitch in the weather injection. We'd have a better idea if that frame rate window was enabled.

Huehehehehe, Skyfarce strikes again! I saw some videos of it on YT and came to a conclusion that injecting METAR is ugly and so 2004. The transitions from one station to another while accurate, soooo ugly.

And Asobo does not like this "method" as I understood from Hifi post and maybe limit this access to ensure the stability? No idea . Also not sure if REX has approached Asobo about it or there are some assurances about it.

There's quite long review video on YT displaying METAR to METAR transitions, you should be able to find it.

You criticise the product and a REX staffer asks you to show evidence. You just point him to YT. You could at least make an effort to help them with a link.

I know. I'm not looking to resolve it as there's hardly anything to resolve on my end. The software is just objectively bugged, incomplete and rushed for sales.

I only provided my experience with it, so other people don't fall for the marketing tricks like I did 😉
