Update Day - 10 November

Then again, I did switch from 1440 at 120% scaling to 4k at 80% scaling around the same time, so maybe the extra resolution is making it look worse just for me.

Both render scales result in the same resolution, 3072x1728. Perhaps it is the updated TAAU (which is enabled only when upscaling) exaggerating the issue.

And I thought it was a scenery simulator. Seems I was wrongly informed!😁

Still a step forward from all the instrument simulators of 15 years back 😄

I still recall a time when flying a 109 in IL2 1946 felt more like a real Cessna than the Cessna in MSFS .

We have come a long way.

You know what?  I have been completely stupid.  I only just realised that when you said.  That is why I suffered no performance loss when going to 4k. 🙄

So now, the difference is, I had to set my Windows desktop to 4k before it would show in MSFS for some reason, otherwise 4k in sim didn't look good at all.  I assumed MSFS would change the monitor screen resolution to 4k when I asked for it, but it didn't - it tried for 4k but the screen was still at 1440.  That solves a few mystery's for me!

So eventually, when setting the desktop to 4k (it is a true 4k monitor) then starting MSFS at 4k, that is when it looked quite stunning and really sharp, which is probably why I an seeing the cloud granularity more now.    As we say in the UK, I have been an absolute plonker! 🤣

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Brace yourself for the "my 320 doesn't work" posts.

Or I can't start this sim because I have a Windows 7 Laptop with a FX 4350 cpu and a geforce 610 graphics card, this game is word not allowed.

Fingers crossed this time, hopefully no CTD's later today. I agree though with what others are saying, that in the long run these updates will make the sim better.

I would just like to add that I think DX12 is maybe closer than we think, because they really need it for XBox, and also, they keep saying it will solve a lot of other issues (reflections etc.) so they are putting a lot of effort into DX12 rather than wasting time fixing DX11 display issues that may not be relevant soon - just my thoughts on why they are slow fixing some display issues.

I think it may come in Q1 2021 but let's see. Yeah, they mentioned DX12 will unlock features like raytracing, the clouds sharpness .. etc. In terms of performance, we will not see a lot but I am happy currently with MSFS performance, so no complains 😄

I am curious on how much it will improve performance. They hinted that we could see better utilization of our hardware. It is annoying to see both CPU and GPU being under-utilized.

I'm not sure that actual GPU utilization can be measured by percentage of use. My GPU can be running at 40% with temps in the 60's, and then when flying into a detailed area stay at about the same percentage of use, but heat up to 78c. Besides, right now we are talking about utilization before any complex addons are available. Do you think that the CPU/GPU will still be under utilized when flying a PMDG and the skies full of accurate AI aircraft? I don't want my system to be at max utilization with just the base sim running, leave plenty of room for the future addons.

Well, that started early - Before this update has even landed - superb! 😄

PS. I'm loving my ever improving 'Airport Simulator'.  😁

I think you'll find that he didn't start it at all.

It started in the second post - someone complaining about a complaint that hasn't even happened yet.

Right now, it's just an airport simulator.

Speak for yourself. 😀

MSFS

Besides MSFS launcher and same main packages they seem to address flight lessons 1 and 3 as well as the 787 and neo - judging from the content manager status.

You don’t need to clean your community folder completely, updates don’t touch it. Addons that edit base files, like the A20X will break so remove those, but airports and liveries are fine to keep in there.

I’ve never done anything to my community folder during updates and they’ve all gone fine.

What do you do with your FSDT, Orbx and other 3rd party scenery? After last upgrade I had to reinstall all the FSDT scenery for KORD and KEYW that had a link file in the Community folder after I had tried to move them to a temp folder. Most of those companies only permit so many re-installs.

You don’t have to touch to your community folder during updates.

MSFS patches don’t touch that folder.

I don’t know why people keep insisting on doing it.

Actually, some people have reported that the community folder affects the Content Manager.  I remember for one of the fixes to building that were too high, people that had downloaded the Japan content had to then get the latest Japan updates in the Content Manager to see the fixes to high buildings. But your community folder can interfere with the Content Manager.

I only have KORD and KTIW, and I haven't had any problem with them.
