Overclocking with RTX 3090

You will be lucky to find any 3090's for sale, Scan, UK have them occasionally at £2000.00+, you basically have to grab what is available when they come on sale, if you are prepared to pay the exorbitant price. I paid £1699.00 for mine just before Xmas and that made my eyes water lol I cannot believe I paid that much money for a GPU. 😐

There is no option. The other option is... no computer at all... 🙄

I finally was ablr to order my 3090 from EVGA yesterday after  almost a 7 month wait. Should arrive today or tomorrow. They are just today delivering product ordered in October 2020. Of course, if you want to pay $1,000 premium you can get them from the scalpers.

I joined EVGA's waitlist in December.. and yeah ... nothing 😞. I needed to upgrade faster than waiting on evga and got my upgraded card and CPU through the Newegg Shuffle at msrp. Im still on the EVGA list but the itch to upgrade is no longer there since i got the 3080 equivalent with more vram. I think im good till December and will see what Nvidia replace the 30series with.

There is a website in Spain/Portugal that is always having them in stock, between 2400 and 2700 euros...

I am thinking of getting my order in early for my RTX 4080.

I should have it for December I reckon...      2022!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Why the heck would anyone overclock a 3090 card?

It's more GPU than the sim can use presently, as you are gonna be CPU bound and software/ server bound anyway, and you are just asking for system and especially game instability and potential CTD's!

I am looking at getting a used GTX1080 and I figure I will have much the same arrival date LOL

The, buying a new GPU, supply situation is ridiculous and very bl..dy expensive.

I very much hope mine lasts another couple of years.

The only things I need to know are: 1. with or without overclocking because there are still 400 euros of difference between them; 2. which one is the best for cooling, noise, and the game itself from these three: a) Asus ROG Strix;

The GPU shortage may go on indefinitely so I would jump on anything available.

Isn't this the sim that everybody was saying before release that at last a sim you will not need a super computer to run it, are we now talking 4 grand plus PCs or a 500 game console. Big tech are raking it in and selling less product`s the rich get richer.

You’ll now get a flood of people replying “runs fine on my 1080 and runs fine on my pentium1” etc..... 😉

I guess the shortage will continue as long as crypto currencies prices rise.

Analyzing the tendency on charts like this can help on buying decisions.

If you have the itch to increase efficiency, I highly recommend undervolting your 3090. You will run cooler at lower fan speeds and can gain even greater benefit to temps by setting power limits (although the power limits will very slightly hurt your FPS).

I used this guide and was able to boost the clock curve by 120MHz. Basically, this means the GPU will ramp the clock speed at lower voltages, thus saving power, lowering temps and fan speeds in the process.

Be aware that MSFS is very picky... my system was rock stable for months until the recent MSFS and Nvidia driver updates, and then I started randomly getting CTD's. Lowering the clock by a mere 45MHz made MSFS rock stable again.

I also set the power limit to 90%... I would rather have a cooler, quieter system and sacrifice 1-2 FPS than run at stock.

Edit: I should also mention that undervolting alone can actually increase performance without going above stock clocks, since the max clock of the GPU is directly proportional to its temps.

My CPU rarely runs above 25% as opposed to FSX where it was always 100%.  Now my GPU runs at 100% isn't this what we wanted?

But do we need to change voltage or just for overclocking which seems not needed at all?
