The JF Piper Warrior II is here

Like a few others here I think this will be a pass for me as I already have the Arrow and Turbo Arrow.  It’s a bit of a shame as I’m sure this will be an excellent aircraft but I just doubt I’d fly it often when I have the other two (technically three) excellent Arrows.

Did you look at the Carenado Arrow III before choosing the JF version?

I am wondering how they compare as regards visuals & FDE performance?

the Carenado, doesn't even fly like a real Piper, which are very docile in the stall. The Carenado on the other hand , when it stalls, will drop a wing and go into a spin easily. That is not the way a Piper aircraft behaves.

The Carenado Arrow looks a bit better to my eye than the JF but the JF Arrow are far more engaging and enjoyable to fly for me.

I'll get to buying it eventually since I would like to review it, but since I am waiting on payday it will have to wait lol.

I have both the JF bundle Arrow III and the Carenado Arrow III.  I like the Carenado a little better.

I did not, though I may pick it up on sale someday as I enjoy other Carenado products in MSFS.  I think there’s a comparison thread somewhere on this forum and maybe @Chockdid a comparison video IIRC?

I did indeed make a comparison video between the two. They both have their merits, so it was not a cheap 'lamb to the slaughter' comparison as some might have expected it to be. However, what really separated them for me, can be seen on the landing approaches, which you can compare at approximately timestamp 23 minutes for the Carenado, and around timestamp 51 minutes for the Just Flight. The Carenado one struggles to lose speed in landing config and in sideslipping, whereas the Just Flight one does not so it's a more convincing 'pilot's aeroplane' with a more sophisticated and nuanced replication of flight in terms of how it penetrates the air when in a draggy configuration. This also makes it better suited to getting into smaller strips.

So in pure complex flyability terms, the Just Flight one is superior, but this might not matter to some people, particularly if they prefer a 'prettier' aeroplane, where the Carenado one would probably edge it, and there are some visual things it does more accurately than the Just Flight one too, for example, the lights are a bit better depicted on the Carenado one and the parking brake affects the rudder pedals on the Carenado one, which is correct since it is a mechanical linkage to the ordinary braking system as are the trim controls on a PA28, which was done for cheapness in terms of systems manufacture, where the parking brake application doesn't move the pedals on the Just Flight one.

If I had to pick only one, I'd probably pick the Just Flight one for the better depiction of sideslipping because that's something I do a lot on aeroplanes in real life just as part of how I tend to fly stuff, but as noted, it's not the hands down winner in every respect.

Oh, and if you fly a real one, it's worth noting that they do have a fundamental difference which might matter to you, in spite of being 'the same plane'; one has a three-blade prop whereas the other has a twin blade prop, so their speed range differs at different stages of flight and they make different noises as well of course.

Just like their versions in X-Plane and prepar3d, it is very good. I did some circuits at Barton EGCB where I real life learn in a Warrior. Take off and climb out seemed about right performance wise. Did a few touch and goes. Response to controls felt nice and my last circuit finished a bit higher so I could side slip on approach which was believable.

I was already a just flight fan so this is just what I expected.

Happy customer.

Sadly my rudder pedals decided to pack it in after many years of service =/

But I tested the Warrior II in the pattern regardless. Overall this thing behaves quite nice!

One issue I found during my very quick testing was the pitch angle during final approach with full flaps is off a bit.

  • IRL I am observing roughly 4 deg nose down (65 kts, 500ft descend) on the attitude gyro
  • in sim I am almost level with the artificial horizon

But by and large, seems like yet another solid release by JF team.

I have both the JF Arrow III and the Carenado Arrow III, I test fly the Carenado one time after I bought it, but I have never touch it again, I thought the flight characteristics was awful, eg, it jumps like a frog from the runway up in the air, definitely not in par with their Mooney, which I like a lot.

I did my solo flight in a Warrior. Still, not getting it. I'm sure it's nice but going faster is better.

I am very much the other way,  my last three purchases were the Cessna 140, Stearman and the Warrior II.

Aside from the fact I am never going to fly a 4 million dollar TBM or 30 million dollar Longitude in real life - my main interest in this game is seeing the scenery up close low and slow.  I will probably spend most of the weekend flying the C140 and Warrior II out of places like Murchison and Milford Sound in New Zealand.  One night at home flying the Warrior II instead of going out to dinner  and drinks will pay for it.

But as they say - each to their own 😄  I am sure JF will bring out plenty of faster planes for people that way inclined over the next year or two.
