Looking for bush flying recommendations?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I've never been a bush flyer in FS (been simming since 2003). I've always been a point to point GA or Airline flyer.  But having seen the Juan Browne videos on YouTube, I fancy trying some bush flying, in small aircraft like the cubs or Aviat (rather than for example, Caravan and larger bush work).

Can anyone recommend either;-

  • Some regions, areas, airfields in the vanilla sim, or
  • Some payware or freeware mods that provide a suitable bush flying arena?

I've been looking at the Okavango Delta package in the Marketplace, which looks superb, but before I pull the trigger, I wanted to get some advice from you wonderful people. 😃

You may look up Flightsim.to. There are an extended number of pre-planned bush-flying adventures in several regions of the world. You can add fitting airports yourself, or some adventures even suggest airports or other extensions to go with them.

Okavanga is a nice one, I have it, although it's not ever easy to find the shy 😉 animals.

Kind regards, Michael

So many places ! To begin with you can try for instance

Northern Idaho, out of McCall KMYL, there are plenty of strips eastward  up to Challis.

Of course, New Guinea (PNG and Indonesian Papua) is always an old classic. Asobo has made an enhanced airport in Bugalaga.

@JYWLet me make an addendum here.

What is bush ? For me it is flying a terrain with many strips (preferably dirt or grass) with an incomfortable approach. As a bonus, it generally makes nice landscapes.

How to find them ? Look for a hilly region anywhere, select a regional airport, go the world map filter and switch off all the runways except the dirt and grass ones and pick one whick looks good.

Case in point. Just did a half an hour fligth from KVEL Vernal, Utah to WY41 Red Creek Ranch Wyoming with the Xcub. Part of the flight was to find where the darn strip was, even with the help of the G3X (blessed be Garmin !). The strip is very short and there are hills which make the  pattern... interesting, specially when you do two go around because you come too fast.

not a terrible place to start are the included "bush" trips. The Alaska one isnt bad.

Also the payware 3U2 in the marketplace is an AMAZING place to run Bush flights. TONS of small dirt strips nearby, and its up in the mountains so alot of trench run flying.

Did you give some of the default bush trips a shot? The early ones are quite good and varied in my opinion.

A payware alternative that I have really enjoyed:

The French one is spectacular too, especially once you hit the Pyrenees. Some challenging landings though!

I have just started exploring New Zealand, this country is breathtaking and has everything a bush pilot could wish for.

All I fly now is the Bush League legend mod for the Xcub. Here is the link. Lots of mods, airplanes (Tundra, Ski,etc) and scenery... Also a great community on the discord to fly with. Highly recommend.
