My thoughts are that X-plane allows users to create and use color lighting schemes of their own design, and something like that might allow people unhappy with MSFS default to go off and build (or download) whatever their idea of the perfect dream setting is. September 8, 20214 yr beyond the issues with taxi/runway lighting, I find it interesting that the airport apron itself is often very dark at the major airports. The odd thing is that this occurs with a weird mix of bespoke and non-bespoke defaults. It seems like they would all the be the same, I have no idea why they are not. It is always a great thing to land at a major at night and have the ramps illuminated. I'd also love to see PCL in the sim. I suppose people would be annoyed if they couldn't find airports so that's why Asobo cranked all the airport lighting in the sim heh. But I echo these stories about not finding real airports at night. Even a large airport in a big city. Look for the black hole in the city - if it's not a water body it's probably an airport lol. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

You could be right. By the same design philosophy they capped the up- and downdrafts, because they were afraid people would not understand why they suddenly lose all control near storms. The weather engine is capable of depicting the correct wind values, they just decided they didn't want that possibility in the sim. The same line of thinking probably lead to the airport lights are always on and clearly visible situation.

I hope at least we agree on that. A.

I hope at least we agree on that. I consider it a fact that people whined (choose your own alternative synonyms, but it's a perfectly valid description) regarding the lighting. It is/was also my expressed opinion/belief that should Asobo obligingly acquiesce to yet another community driven change in the lighting, that there will almost certainly be a number of people who won't like that either. I have seen this cycle repeat so many times over the years that I won't even put forward my own lighting preferences because the whole subject is cyclically futile. I do idly wonder if there will finally come a day when Asobo makes a firm artistic/financial decision and then puts its foot down and sticks to it, because as I said, you really can't please everyone. This is the sum and total of what I had to say regarding the topic of this thread. You then replied that in your opinion my comment was disrespectful, because you associated the word "whine" with the behavior of children. I am sorry, but what you associate with what has nothing to do with me, and I take no responsibility for it, beyond noting for the record that it was not me that brought the word "children" into the discussion. 🤔 Your subsequent invitation for me to defend calling people children is and was subsequently rejected since I never did so. What I did do was reply philosophically to your remark about children, with my own feeling that many times adults are worse than children, and I stated why I felt like that, a remark I considered outside the context of the lighting issue. Your mileage may vary. 56 minutes ago, ADamiani said: Do you want to address someone as childish? That's different. And I think it is wrong. September 9, 20214 yr Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is most likely the crux of this topic, nevertheless and just to put this question in perspective: night lighting was accepted as better than previous FS version and quite realistic prior Aug 2020 (NB: I'm not breaking any NDA here, there are pre-release/alpha materials detailing why in the topic I link below) when they released in Aug 2020, they completely changed it to "something else"... People didn't whine because they are tiresome grownups (Merrian-Webster definition includes "tiresomely") but because for many if not most it wasn't good anymore, at least not as good as during alpha. however a significant portion of users complained about "lights in the distance" first, instead of "rendition of lights" in general, and this led to the "sepia mask" idea which was followed by another increasing number of disgruntled people. All this to say it is not just a small portion of users complaining about night lighting, it is one of the most demanded topic and it is also highly documented and experimented with. I've posted this morning a recap of all the main chapters about this topic, here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/night-lighting-looks-incredible/451107/16?u=cptlucky8

I remember rural roads were lit as good as downtown which was wrong, pointed out and ignored. Since then they were few fixes of lighted rural terrain, but things didn't change significantly really? September 9, 20214 yr @sd_flyer I tend to share you opinion about XP11 lighting:Runway approach lights - should be directional - Self-Service / Wishlist - Microsoft Flight Simulator ForumsNight lighting issues still present - The community solutions - post 1057 However pre-release vs release is explained and detailed in a few of the aforementioned posts, with screenshots and explanations. I was in the beta, and actually thought the original night lighting was lovely. I was pretty surprised when people started complaining about it with the oft-used "realism" argument. I was one of the people who wrote that I thought the lighting was fine as it was; maybe not completely realistic, but artistically lovely. Nope. The complaints grew, and as usual, Asobo reacted and changed things in an effort to please. I thought the new lights were fugly, but the louder voices had spoken. Now here we are, and in many ways I'm divorced from the issue by my inner certainty that even if Asobo reacts once again, people will eventually reject that as well. Round and round we go. September 9, 20214 yr I wish I can see how the lights looked before MSFS was officially released so that I have something to compare to. It's hard to say what's better when you don't even know what they looked like before. But I do agree, certain aspects of night lighting/airport lighting in X-Plane looks better. Like the example pics I posted earlier. I thought the original lighting was much more XP-Like..... Much more subdued/subtle and this is not the best pic because the variety of varied colors does not come through, though I hope the lack of the dreaded sepia mask does.....
