What does MSFS actually do during startup?

Featured Replies

Today I kept the task manager open and noticed that CPU and SSD usage are in the 0-5% range for most of the time. Network usage is also modest (less than 1 MBps for most of the time, zero for more than half of the process).

Other games max out the CPU when loading, startup is actually the phase in which having more cores really matters.

So I wonder... what does the sim actually do during startup with such a low usage of the hardware, and is there room for optimization?

Asobo/MS have always been silent on that and the vast majority of the users seems just to keep for granted that MSFS has to take 2+ minutes to start because it has good graphics 🙂

What do you think?

I think it would be super cool, when it could and would load faster

Maybe checking for piracy, perhaps. Maybe undoing DLC.

You don't want to know 🤣 ! i would be say off my hat that they check if you are a legit user and do some telemetry to hook you to the best server.

Something I don't understand is why it takes more than 15 sec to check whether you are playing with the last update.

It's the worst start up of a game or sim I have ever owned. Its shockingly bad.

I am playing New World a new MMO, it starts up within 1 min, I played 2 days for 16 hours per day, just ran perfectly and its brand new. With millions of people playing it. All online with servers and that also ran perfectly. All on day one release.

Now Asobo/MS explain why you need 5 mins to load?

Seems to me that this is in sense still a FSX legacy thing. The more scenery you put in there the longer the load times got.

Default P3D had load times of about a minute for me. After I pimped it to the max with ORBX stuff, loads of add-on planes and insane amounts of AI-Models it would take 18 Minutes to load.

The long pause before the application boots is likely the shader pre-caching process. After the splash screens and the Press Any Key screen (automatically skipped on PC), the game downloads/syncs the player's profile from the Xbox servers (which is why it takes a few seconds for the music to be muted/swapped).

After checking the packages to make sure they're up-to-date, it starts scanning every single file in the Official and Community folders (which is why it takes longer the more content you have). It also performs some server requests at the end before going to the menu (if I'm downloading/uploading something else the loading bar will be stuck indefinitely).

It's worth noting that the speed of the scan depends on the frame rate to an extent (for me there is a small but noticeable difference between locking the frame rate to 20, 30 and 60 FPS). It is also said by many users that the scanning is mostly a single-threaded process, and from what I can tell I'd say it's true but the Windows scheduler is trying to spread the load across all available cores, which could be why you're seeing low CPU utilisation while loading.

Mine loads in under 2 minutes with an empty community folder but with 115 items in my community folder it takes nearly 5 minutes, so I know what it is doing for 3 minutes of that time.

Basically crash protection.  Checking everything that could cause a conflict or result in missing data.  What you lose at the beginning in time you more than make up in stability once you get flying.

Big pause? Probably a big dog in your computer. 😉

Worse than FSX?  Not worse than my FSX, anyway.  I could start it up, nip out to the pub for a couple, come back, make tea, wash up and FSX was still loading!

It is the most amauterish game startup I have ever seen, last thing you would expect from a giant like Microsoft.

No signs of activity for at least 30 seconds then a slow sequence of banners and splash screens, some of which seem to be put together by somebody just started playing with MS Paint.
Music volume all over the place if you have chosen a custom audio level.

The game itself is great (with a few shortcomings) so I learned to just ignore the word not allowed startup process and to remove any addons that might cause extra delays

Who knows maybe SU6-7-8 might improve this aspect too.

Malwarebytes can scan my PC in around a min, and tell the people that have CTD that its crash protection.....🙂

I dont recall clicking FSX and wondering 20-30 seconds later " did I click it right or not?.....might have to click it again....!!!" becasuse nothing happens.......nothing to tell you for around 30 sec that you even started the damm thing......🤪

Asobo gave us a splash screen once, it worked for me once and once only....what ever happened to that?....no, lets leave them guesting for 30 seconds if they singled click or double clicked it..or if you have it on your task bar." did I click it????"🙄" I think I did...!!!!!" 💥

Checking for updates......yer it must take a long time to check some 01010101010101 code to see if your version is the upto date one....it should take 5 seconds. 1 second if it did not have to look online....it could have looked that up in the 30seconds it shows us sweet _A

But if you want a real LOL

New World is so populare the servers are to populated and they made 50 new ones to help becasue I can wait on my main one for 2-3 hours just to login....so " ( I dont, I log in around 7am) and have another char on a new server) I can talk" when it comes to load times. LOL.

The Guy asmongold streamed starting the game, the problem was he told everyone the server he was going to, he hit the enter/start and his was 10,400 in the queue around 14 hours waiting time....

I cannot link the vid as its "adult" just paste this in youtube "The Asmongold New World LAUNCH Experience"
