New FS2020 Google Maps MOD for the entire world

Quite a difference, it seems, but still not sure it would be worth it.......

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

This looks very cool.   Instinct tells me it's only a  matter of time until Google throws a chock under someone's terms of service  parade,  though.

/On a side note.   I wonder if Austin,   the dev of X-Plane,  has ever approached Google for a partnership.

You have to be aware, that MSFS harmonizes the color between the different tiles. MSFS shows much less artefacts and color boundaries than the normal Windows map tool.

Therefore, if the google map tile are not color harmonized like the Bing ones, the result will be much worse.

Here are some examples, which show artefacts in google maps, which very likely make the sim looking worse than with bing based maps:

When doing side-by-side comparisons between google maps and bing maps lately, I also did not find google to have better aerials than bing. In fact, I have stumbled over many places, for which Bing has better colors and resolution.

What about the performance?

What about the photogrammetry?

About the conclusion I arrived at in my verdict in the other thread. In the US and some EU countries, Google Maps is great and mostly superior. Higher quality, better colours and no green tint of roads (which I assume happened in the process of correcting all the titles to match, a blanket setting).

That said, Google Maps also swings wildly in quality. Load up at Malta, load up at Auckland, load up a dozen different locations outside of US / and some of the EU and it quickly takes a dive off a cliff. Extreme quality and colour differences in the middle of popular destinations, completely unbalanced stitching of imagery and tons of separation lines. Even in some popular US spots it struggles, go to the Grand Canyon and look at how drab and and washed out everything is, Bing at least manages to make it retain some colour and saturation.

So for some helicopter flying in the US, some low VFR flying in specific locations, it's an improvement but if you want consistency throughout the world, the Bing implementation is superior.

Hi all. Thanks for posting this. Im the creator of the video in the first post, and I personally find this FS2020 mod to be truly amazing (big thanks to the mod creator of copurse, as Im not taking any credits here).

Especially if you are flying in remote areas, small cities or just in the middle of nowhere, the Google textures are just so much better (in most cases). The textures are way better updated, specifically in Europe and there are areas around the world that Bing doesnt even cover - which Google does, in China, Russia etc.

Regarding performance, I havent seen any difference in terms of frame rate really, although I do believe more VRAM might be used since the textures are mostly more detailed and therefore probably also larger in size.

As seen in the video, here are two examples on how much better it looks in my hometown, Sweden (near Arlanda airport):

Performance is almost the same.

Photogrammetry is still from Bing. Not available from GoogleMaps , yet.

Hi MrFuzzy.

There was no catch. I used Tile Proxy for a long time with FSX and it was very good. A bit of a guddle to set up the .ini file but once that was done it worked well.

Cheers...Kenny.

Yes I'm sure it can't be better everywhere, but I have to say I am using this for S America - Colombia and Ecuador so far. There are massive cloud gaps in Bing, but the Google textures are superb in this region - few if any cloud gaps. Don't know about other areas yet. Worth it just for that, for me...

Also I haven't noticed colour matching to be that great in Bing especially in Europe and UK in places...
