Google or no Google

I downloaded the MSFS 2020 Google Map replacement and have used it several times without any problem, but I have not been impressed. I have the latest version and set it up as directed in the demonstration video. I have also viewed many comparison videos but have not personally seen much difference in my setup.

I decided to go to a specific location and chose Lord Howe Island in the South Pacific Ocean as I felt such an isolated place would demonstrate apparent differences. The results surprised me. The Lord Howe Island without Google was by far the best. Brighter with much better detail. Is it possible I have a setting incorrectly set? I tried to embed the photos but without success.

I wouldn't leave home without MSFS-G.   Uh uh...

Any drop in fps using google?

I decided to try it because much of Virginia where I fly frequently is fairly poor in Bing. Google overall was better in these locations but not in a big way. The biggest difference was that most roads that were green in Bing were natural looking in Google. No drop in FPS that I could tell. Not sure I will continue to use Google, but I wish there was something that could be done about those green Bing roads.

I can only echo what others have already said here. Installation (and subsequent operation) is easy - all credit to the developer(s) ... but results really are very area-dependent.

I generally fly around New Zealand - which doesn't seem to have ever been a priority for Google - so it's very varied. Many of the urban areas are done well/better than Bing, but the landscape often has poor tiling and/or colour mismatches.

If I know in advance where I'm likely to be flying, I decide whether to pre-launch the tool - it's as simple as that.

BTW: Some of the [older] instruction videos mention editing your hosts file when uninstalling (or if wanting to temporarily switch back to Bing). This appears to be no longer necessary, as the tool adds/removes the hosts entries on a per-session basis. 🙂

Never even tempted to switch to Google maps, happy with what I see now and no problems either.

I made the switch to google and love it so far.  However, today in my flight from KJAC-KDEN over the rockies (clear day), the tiles were popping up in the near distance the entire flight.  It was like the scenery was non google or very default everywhere but right under me.  I have never seen that before.  Anyone else get this?

I have followed this closely in other forum posts! The above statement is 100% correct.Tiling is problem with Google Maps. In many cases the colouring with Bing Maps is also superior to Google Maps.

What is tilling?

Tiling is sections of the earth are divided into let's say 50 square or 100 square miles.  The program, like MSFS  'seams' in each tile...and that is why, you have lush green foliage at position x/y.  At position x/y + 40 miles, away,  you might see a 'line' of fall colors, right next to summer or spring.  It is when that section of the terrain was taken from Space...could have been the Spring, could have been the Fall...that is Tiling...the world of Google Maps and Bing is a quilt work of different days, different cloud bases over the terrain, even shot at a different season...and then 'quilted' into Earth's vastness.

Prior to using Google tiles, I never used the data cache. However - when using Google tiles, I set up a 30Gb cache size, but had to enable/disable Bing (in Data options) for the cache to "take".

One the cache was established, I found my tiles remained loaded - and I didn't have that "popping" in/out that you describe.

I have seen two different tiling effects, one is "popping", another is colour changes between tiles.  Both distracting.. 😉

I haven't bothered with this Google Mod. I was afraid of bandwith and LOD issues

OK, this is my personal opinion and experience.  I tried it and thought the visuals were fantastic. However, be aware that the install of this program also installs certificates that give out administrative rights to your computer.  On top of that I kept losing a connection to the internet for some reason.  So, I decided enough.  While cleaning everything out, the operating system got bonked and my registry got messed up in the process.  It took me about two days to clean everything up and get the sim working correctly again.  Luckily, I got everything working again with a few commands in the administrative DOS shell, but it was starting to look like a windows reinstall before that.  There are plenty of horror stories out there so don't just take my word on it.  There are some right in the reviews on flightsim.to and the author graciously left them up so I have to give him kudos for that.  I did enjoy the program for the short time I used it but having foreign certificates and the loss of a connection becoming increasingly more often became more than I was willing to pay for the increase in the quality of the visuals.

LouP

Thank you LouP,   I have lost all interest in this modification program after reading others' experiences.
