FlightSim.to is going to make money

They have to pay for the hosting and the bandwidth, what do you expect?

Nothing is free, unless it can rely on ads AND a huge userbase, which a flight simulator addons website will never have.

Personally I welcome this, it's better than nothing. Why nothing? Because if they fail and shut down the website, everything is lost.

Everything is lost? Hm, i think people will find ways, they always do.

They host a lot of items using Google’s proprietary data with all those photogrammetry sceneries. I am curious how careful they have to be once they start running credit cards.

How about AVSIM? Don't they have to make some money!

Good point!  I suppose it depends where they are based.  I have never thought about that.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

I don't see an issue with this.  They are entitled to do what they want.  I've never had an issue downloading things off their site.  They already have the countdown timer and it is mildly annoying.  Most addons aren't really all that "big" from a file size standpoint unless it is some massive mesh or something (getting those is always an issue anyway).

Granted I try and keep my sim leaner this time around.  Default airports look so much better than past sims so I don't feel compelled to grab every 3rd party file I find.

Voluntary donors at the moment.  Never enough of them.

Who are the folks behind flightsim.to? I'd like to put names to faces before shelling out cash.

I love the "we have heard your calls...". Since when people are calling for paying, seriously ?

Well I for one contacted them to ask if it were possible to make a donation, Can't remember the date to answer your question though <grin>

From their website news:

"

  • Premium: We have heard your calls for an optional premium membership without ads and long waiting times and are already working on implementing this."

I do not critizise this and they have it well deserved to make some money (for a hopefully reasonable price for us).

But I find it always "funny" if first download speeds will be throttled and ads would be placed to offer some month later ad free and fast premium membership. I doubt that there where many "calls for a premium membership" 😉

I hate marketing speech, maybe that is it then.

The download speed itself is pretty fast until now. Do you think it is throttled? The 15s pause before the actual download starts is the only throttling imo. Just got a 1.5 GB download within one minute.

THAT was my point, thanks

Well, IMHO you ought to be a politician with a quote like that.  The actual announcement was ...

'Premium: We have heard your calls for an optional premium membership without ads and long waiting times and are already working on implementing this.'

So, people have been calling for add free and no long waiting times for downloads.  Presumably nobody will be shocked there will be a subscription for this.

I don't get this thread. People want free stuff on someone else expense and want it now how does that work in the real world. Pay the Premium or prepare to wait hours or days for a download in reference to Flightsim.to. Sheesh folks.

Exactly. 'I want it all, at zero cost'. The same people that go to pirated sites, to get 'free' payware addons. Disgusting attitude.

What a ridiculous statement to think that people want "everything" for free and/or those people use pirate sites

I wonder how the devs that provide free content feel about this business model.

Some people on this forum would squeeze a penny so hard Lincoln would scream, yet they think nothing of dropping $25 or more dollars on an aircraft that can barely fly.  Look at all the members that don't even donate to Avsim and some have been members for a decade or more.

Absolutely but how many people now donate to Flightsim.to to keep the servers going? maybe this the reason they have decided to go to a premium model in the first place. There is always some that will pay for a product no matter price but there are too many out the try to squeeze out whatever they can for nothing than when they don't get it they complain about it. I want to eat everyday I don't expect to get it for free though.
