Did clouds take a major downgrade in SU8?

Featured Replies

Yikes, looks pretty bad here out of YSSY just now and I had just been thinking clouds mysteriously had slowly improved some at least since SU7, but now it's gone the other way--I only have one flight in SU8 so far.  What are others seeing?

My clouds have looked far better than before. Odd!

Former Child, Current Adult

Clouds look absolutely the same to me. No real improvement or regression. Make sure your settings didn’t revert after upgrading.

Ok well maybe it was just an off scenario or what have you. Thanks for your replies thus far.

I don't think clouds have been downgraded (again), but after my 2 flights tonight, they certainly haven't improved much, if at all.

What's weird is I spent all last week island hopping in the Caribbean and with warm temps/dewpoints I never once saw the convective volcano formations I call "angry" cumulus.  Yesterday, I flew MKJP-CYUL and as soon as I hit New York, they appeared.  Today, 2 short hops out of YUL and it's angry all over the sky while metars are indicating few @18000 and scattered@FL240 with cold temps.  I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a miscalculation on the Asobo side similar to confusing AGL and MSL only concerning temps and moisture.

The clouds are about the same.  They have made overcast a bit thicker apparently.   It seems to look better in other peoples photos, but I haven't tried overcast myself yet.

Clouds look the same as before SU8 to me, which is to say a huge step back from several months ago (I lost track of when clouds took a nosedive -- was it SU5?). Instead of realistic-looking stratus and other "flattish" cloudforms, you get these cotton ball puffs everywhere that look weirdly stretched vertically. That said, I must be the crazy one since most people seem not to even see a change over time, let alone think the weather looks bad. I'd say the change made to clouds back whenever it was makes them much more like ActiveSky clouds in P3D. Sort of artificial looking, trying to mimic a real overcast with lots of little clouds stuck together, only one cloud type, etc.

Honestly, the weather was probably my single favorite thing about MSFS (even more than the sat imagery and blackshark autogen!). It was great! And then, for whatever reason (to allow for METARs?) they broke it, as simple as that. I don't mean to sound like a drama queen or an MSFS basher, but it's really sapped my enthusiasm for the platform. Especially because so many people don't even seem to see it, so why would it ever get fixed or reverted? I go back to my screenshots folder prior to the change and it just bums me out. ☹️

Yes I have to agree. The depicted clouds were amazing and for me provided a real feeling of flying.

I wish I could have them back. I feel it has been such a regression from when the METAR adjustment was made.

Regarding pre and post SU8 I don’t see any real difference in quality either way. They look the same apart from now there is a lot of isolated popcorn looking clouds in mainly  clear weather. In fact I haven’t seen any sky totally clear of cloud with live weather.

Why on earth would Asobo "downgrade the clouds" - it makes no sense!

I think mine look slightly better.

I guess this shows just how impossible it is to please everybody.

SU5 killed the clouds in VR, nothings been improved or changed since that I've seen. Love a regression Asobo.
