That's not what the OP said - he asked if they took a downgrade, not if Asobo downgraded them. That's a common phrase, like "The Yankees' bullpen got a real downgrade" or "the survivability of the 737MAX has been severely downgraded", none of which implicites a voluntary action. March 1, 20224 yr At last. Someone has shown some SU5 clouds and post SU5 clouds so we can compare. There can be no doubt the pre SU5 clouds are better. The ones we have now look like a building demo company has been tasked with downing 100 buildings all at once. As we all know, clouds are very white (definitely sunglasses required) when bathed in light from the sun at most times of the day. The volcanic ash clouds we have now, rising from the ground as they do, bear little resemblance to natural clouds. Cheers Terry No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea. Actually VR performance is better using the optimized clouds in SU8. The clouds of SU7 bogged down framerates in VR but now that's much improved. Flying low over terrain is far better now because of this. That being said I see no real change in the look of the clouds. March 1, 20224 yr I briefly thought they looked better... but then had another look... No. Sorry new to MSFS. Does ActiveSky still not replace all the clouds with better ones like back in FSX? March 1, 20224 yr I dunno what some are complaining about, I see an upgrade to the weather depiction overall and clouds like the best they ever have on MY system. If they didnt change anything from here on out I would not complain too much at all TBH. 7900x3d , 64gb 6200mhz 30CL Ram, RTX 3080

March 1, 20224 yr Not for me. Flying for Ryan in PNG in his Kodiak whilst he and his wife are on vacation lol. As you know there's often the odd cloud to be seen in PNG, and today the overcast is awesome (learning) on route to Goroka- Dinangat. Multilayer clouds and very threatening storms off over the mountains and quite turbulent. A day to take care. For me clouds are better than pre SU5 as the lava lamp effect is really not there any more. Not saying there isn't more work to do but I'm pretty happy so far.
March 1, 20224 yr There are no wrongs or rights on the clouds - it is mainly a personal perception / opinion thing, just like most things, but these factors also contribute to how people perceive them: - 1. Distance to the clouds - They seem to look better from further away (I would expect this). 2. Lighting conditions - The appearance can change drastically whether they are backlit, or lit from the front. 3. Sharpening on or off in the user config - Sharpening on at higher screen resolutions definitely causes the pixelation to look worse. 4. Probably a few other settings in game or in the GPU software, such as super sampling etc. My personal opinion is that they are just about fine for now as they are, but Asobo could do with taking another look at some stage. Occasionally, I see slight pixelation, depending on light direction and backdrop. I also have an effect I cannot easily describe when one transparent cloud passes in front of another, like a blocky smear. I have tried different drivers, but no good. I think it is just a small issue with the rendering engine. Not looked at it in DX12 yet, but I don't intend to use it for some time. Of course, I suppose we would all like decent looking high level cirrus at some stage as well. Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). Sure, I've seen some not so great skies, but I've also seen amazing skies like that. I'm going to join a few others here who are unhappy with the changes to the weather engine in asking whether you can post after-SU5 screenshots showing just that. The difference in my screenshot folder is as clear as day, but maybe I've been very unlucky in my choice of places to fly. To be specific, what do I see in that shot that instantly marks it out as pre-SU5? Long, unbroken, horizontal cloud structures. I've been looking for those for months and haven't seen them even a single time. What I see everywhere instead is a sort of substitute that piles fluffy cumulonimbus on top of each other to fill roughly the same space (albeit much taller) but with a very different effect -- patchy and not very convincing looking at any distance. They often look like tropical storm clouds in places that makes no sense. That pre-SU5 shot is pretty indistinguishable from a photo to me at this resolution. You'd have to be pretty poorly sighted to mistake post-SU5 clouds for a photo...
March 1, 20224 yr I am quite sure that with SU8 (and already with the Beta) the clouds got better. Most importantly they are much less transparent now, so the sun does not shine thrue all the time as before. Overcast conditions really look like overcast now. I was in flying in northern Washington state yesterday (mostly overcast, some rain) and the clouds, their back lighting, their shadows etc. were really, really good.
