From 4.5 to 5.3

Featured Replies

I am planning to switch from p3dv4.5 to 5.3.
My PC meets the requirements, except my GraKa. With 4GB it only meets the minimum.
Can a 5.3 user give me hope or should I better stay with 4.5?

Tks,Peter

v5.3 knocks the socks off v4.5,  and is my personal opinion. v5.3 has better memory management, using DX12.

With only 4GB of VRAM I wouldn't make that jump.

You run the risk of Device Hung error, which has yet to be solved.  The ‘fixes’ for this problem do not work for all cases.

and the minimum is not enough for fun.

4gb no way... even my 8gb card is sometimes (or more often) not enough... and to be honest EA is quite nice, but then better use a nice shader in 4.5 and stay out of problems.

Cheers

Like others said, I also recommend not upgrading with only 4gb of video ram, but you could purchase a refurbished 1080ti with 11gb for around $300. That's what I have and never had a video memory related problem with P3Dv5.

the water in costal areas looks so weird in v5, don't upgrade itspacer.png

I'm glad I upgraded from v4.5 to v5.3.  The performance is much better, and I like the Enhanced Atmospherics, although I don't use the volumetric clouds.  Hopefully, the clouds will be improved in future versions.

The only downside to v5 IMO is that the vector data in some areas is poor.  I'm flying in northern Canada lately and there are many lakes and rivers with improper elevations, creating those ugly artificial "lake mountains" or deep holes.  With more accurate addon mesh, the problem is even worse.

Maybe LM will fix this stuff in future releases.

You have already made a seperate post about your water problem, to which I have replied.  Your image is not typical of P3D5.3 water with normal settings.

Pitter -- ignore that post. He obviously has problems noted in his separate post. But, he didn't provide any basic troubleshooting information.....If you upgrade your video to an 8Gb card (like a used 1080ti as noted above -- which is what I did) you will love 5!

Gigabyte x670 Aorus Elite AX MB; AMD 7800X3D CPU; Deepcool LT520 AIO Cooler; 64 Gb G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO DDR5 6000; Win11 Pro; P3D V5.4; 1 Samsung 990 2Tb NVMe SSD: 1 Crucial 4Tb MX500 SATA SSD; 1 Samsung 860 1Tb SSD; Gigabyte Aorus Extreme 1080ti 11Gb VRAM; Toshiba 43" LED TV @ 4k; Honeycomb Bravo.

I was using 5.3 with my 1660 ( 6Gb ) GPU without any memory issues.

Artur

Like others have pointed out already, if you have a 4GB card it would be better to stick with 4.5.

However I do know a few people who use 5.3 with 4GB cards on low/medium settings. On regular usage 5.3 uses around 3-4 GB of VRAM, the extra VRAM that we have is the overhead in case things go out of hand. However the 3-4 GB can easily become 5-6 depending on the aircraft or the airport that you are on.

Although if you still want to jump into 5.3, you can get the developer license for a month at $10 (I think its 10 bucks) and try it out first before investing into a academic copy for long term. One month will be more than enough for you to test the sim out.

Happy flying!

In v4.5 my 8 GB 1070Ti would max out it's memory in many instances, particuarly where there was a lot of PBR involved.

Once up in the air mem use would drop down to the typical level as shown in the pic (4.5  HF3).

I've only just begun to play around with v5 and it as yet doesn't have the expansions my V4.5 has atm, but so far it's been a little higher in mem use.
