Do you keep zip files?

Featured Replies

This is a rather stupid question, where I am actually pretty sure to know the answer. However, since I downloaded a bunch of freeware stuff, I am wondering if I should keep the zip files or if it's enough to just extract them into the community folder and delete the zip. The only reason why there are zipped are to make them downloadable, as far as I know.

Can I just delete the zip's without risking anything for the future, kind of as a backup?

After the flightsim.to fiasco I've started keeping paints I really love.

Keep payware zip’s as backups. Delete the rest. Many are updated so frequently anyway.

why keep  a  outdated zip  file  be  just  as  easy to go  to your  account  and download  the  latest version

That only works if the original file is still there where it was when you downloaded it. Many files on flightsim.to are simply gone.

Careful with payware also... some do not allow downloads beyond a certain date... as I found out the hard way..

I keep everything. Got a cheap SATA 4TB drive just for that. Access to everything at any time.

It is always a good idea to keep backups if you can.

I can understand keeping the payware zip files (I hear theres STILL companies that have download limits, unbelievable) but the freeware stuff I unzip into Community and immediately delete the zip.

The Community folder is already in essence a backup so what I do is use Macrium Reflect to image the folder and then every week just update the image which just takes minutes.

Now of course this comes down to individual preference. If you have the HD space you can set aside a drive for the zips - if you are mod crazy they gather up quickly and begin chewing up space!

All my addons are stored in a backup folder on my 4TB remote drive with an antieviction code folder.

I keep everything, well, latest couple of versions anyway. Periodic purges to clean up.

As much habit as anything. Been doing it with downloads forever. I've probably got files as old as some of the younger folk on here. And I've got a pile of installation floppies older than Facebook (almost older than Zuckerburg)
