X-Plane 12.1.2 Discussion

Featured Replies

Instead of a new thread for every single beta, let's try to have one for an entire point release.

As of today, the first beta of X-Plane 12.1.2 is available from the installer.

Here's the announcement:

https://www.x-plane.com/2024/08/release-x-plane-12-1-2/

No detailed changelog (yet).

What I noticed:

Water colors look about the same. Nothing that would make me think I am on vacation in the Caribbean.

Really awful roads.

Coastlines still have those sharp awful angles.

Too many static sailboats with their sails out. Looks weird!

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, RTX 4080S, Ram - 32GB, 32" 4K Monitor, WIN 11.

And they havnt included seagulls, my life is in shambles. Never fly xplane again.

Looks like Laminar will have to add on fishing vessels for those large flocks of seagulls.!!!!!

Laminar pointed out a long time ago, that the amount of detail required to make nice roads , would kill most computers, so I would assume that would be one of teh last things on there lists , doesnt change teh way a plane flys,

This is why MSFS is better. Have you seen all those sharks on the bottom of the continental shelf. Awesome LOL

It should not though on modern hardware.

They need new Engine then. Outerra Planetary Engine is perfect example of what roads should look like in Mountain/hills area (road gradients).

Part of the problem is the data source. There are no smooth curves in their roads in OpenStreetMap. So it looks like XP just copies the sharp angles that somebody drew in the map.

You top that off with all the stuff that should be in-between the roads that's not in the sim and it's a mess.

When I look out the cockpit windshield below, I see XP10 graphics that is 12 years old.

The problem is the amount of data getting downscaled by Laminar, not the source data.

Hence, the plan to move for new formats that'll allow them to pack much more efficiently and densely.

Do not expect any major scenery improvements before that, no need to beat the dead horse over and over every release like it happens around here, we already know they are working on it NOW, let's focus and discuss on what's actually being released.

Not entirely true. The roads are using bezier curves generated from the OSM road data. This was mainly done to reduce the number of points needed to generate corners and reduce the size of the scenery tiles back in the XP10 days and you can also clearly see this if you overlay them on aerial imagery (as they don't align correctly to the original ones). It's still not great though and I tend to just disable the roads and make them transparent

protip for the roads on ortho (good upgrade for orbx btw)

reduce the lod for the none highways to around 4km, they transition beautifully between transparent far away and detailed up close.

for UK and europe - make them tarmac instead of concrete.
