Why, if I might ask. Did they improve the update system after I left? 😀

They created MSFS, why bother with a third-party ?

  • Steam! Updating the MS Store version of MFS2020 was , shall we say, not intuitive. Steam version is one click and done... Russ

Steam. Windows version was poor some of us reverted to Steam after problems and found it much better.

Pay no attention to complaints with the Xbox Store!

Steam version is straight forward, no nonense, non-encrypted, easy to use, access to all of Steam's overlay features much more easily. It's a no brainer.

Totally agree.

Steam version of MSFS2020 has been totally satisfactory so I'll definitely be going with Steam for MSFS2024.

I regret my MS Store purchase of MSFS 2020.  The only reason I did it was I had the 1 month store trial so it was quite easy to purchase the full up license.  Had I known the thoroughly fubar MS encryption and installation wonkiness behind it, I definitely would have used Steam.  Sad to say I'm now sort of stuck with the MS Store, but in the end it works "good enough".

Ah, I see what you mean. So you can get a receipt for the credits you bought, but no receipt is available for the (shall we say) the airport you bought.

Perhaps this is to do with in-game purchasing. For example, if I buy something directly from Steam (not while I'm in any game), the purchase gives me a receipt and details the item I just bought, which would usually be a titled game. However, if I am in a game, such as MSFS, and I am buying downloadable content (DLC), then I can only do this with Steam credits. I therefore have to purchase Steam credits and may decide to buy just sufficient for the DLC I want, or to top up my wallet for future purchasing of in game DLC  in MSFS or any other game title for that matter.

Accordingly, it is the initial purchase of the selected quantity of credits which is the receiptable transaction (just like buying chips at the casino). What you do with these credits (chips) is your business and Steam doesn't see any need to give you a receipt for the part or full use of these credits since they are tokens, vouchers or even a foreign currency transaction which you have already fully paid for and been given a receipt for. You can use them at will.  I suspect Steam has no idea what DLC you exchanged for these credits and so only lists the name of the title you were in-game with when you used them. A bit like a credit card company that gives you a $1000 credit and on your monthly invoice shows you where you expended some of the credit and the amount you paid, but has no idea what you actually bought.

Seems a bit third world to me. In this age of transaction transparency, they have gone the other way. There is literally zero record available of what I purchased. Legally, for them, it's obviously genius. That's why I avoid Marketplace now completely.

Steam users have issues.  I don't want a 3rd party involved between me and the 1st party.  Steam has no secret access for trouble-free functioning and if you delve you will see they have issues that can thwart users I've read some there.  I've had 2020 since launch, did the initial install thru the MS Store as well as 2 subsequent reinstalls over the 4 years now and the last one into a new Win 11 install.   I've made probably 16 or so purchases thru the Store as well.  I've had zero problems with it ever in 4 years now including all Sim and World Updates.   Next purchase of course will be from the MS Store.

I've had zero issues with the steam version, meanwhile I've seen a lot of issues from MS Store users in the last 4 years.

There is a complete record of how much I paid for each purchase but odd the item itself isn't recorded.  Because of this I have taken screenshots of the Marketplace page that filters to what I own.

So can MSStore no matter what you have experienced.

But over the last 4 years, on this very subforum I've seen more MS Store only issues reported than I have Steam.

Steam early on for MSFS was probably more idio_t-proof and that is its draw.  I'm not the sharpest tech wiz in the batch and yet I had no trouble learning how to install MSFS from a store purchase.  Every single purchase has been flawless, my three complete installs on different hardware and OS were flawless as are all Sim and World Updates.  Everything I bought is recorded in Content Manager and the reinstall is simple as such.  My guess is most of those who reported troubles here didn't appreciate the few requirements demanded early on.   I learned the basic steps which were specific but few and simple.  Since then all reinstalls have been uber simple and efficient.  Don't want or need a 3rd party installer thanks.
