MSFS 2024 Steam or Windows Store…?

Which one are you planning on using for your purchase and why?

Can 2024 be played outside the Steam client?

Thanks!

I preordered the Standard edition on Steam already. I fly just a few birds anyway, and most of my games collection is on Steam, not mentioning the issues that many users had on MS Store in the past...

Steam. Windows version was poor some of us reverted to Steam after problems and found it much better.

Therein lay most the social-media-driven (that would be Avsim) bias here towards Steam.  Early on one needed to understand how the Store app worked and it was clearly less than intuitive

Umm, yeah. That's why I switched to Steam...

Some people seem to think "their" store is immaculate and the other is the devil's work. Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion but I dislike misinformation and some seem to religiously try to attack one store and defend the other

Personal experience will drive most people's opinions of which store is better - which is not 'attacking' either.

In my case I purchased from the store. No problems in the first year, but then I was without MSFS for four days while I tried to fix a problem. On another occasion I joined a beta, which ended up requiring a re-install of the SIM.  At that point I purchased the steam version.  I have had no problems in the past three years which included several betas.

I would recommend Steam from my own experience. However, I have no doubt many users have had no problems at all with their store version.

If I was buying now I’d probably go with Steam as I’ve had my share of headaches with the X Box app and windows updates that cause the sim to hang on startup. However I have lots of marketplace purchases that I’d lose, so MS it is.

Why would you lose your MS Marketplace purchases? Surely they could be reinstalled in MSFS 2024?

Apparently not. If you switch from MS store to Steam or vice versa, anything you purchased from the former is lost. It’s very annoying.

I went with the MS store again. I intended to purchase MSFS 2024 through Steam, but having purchased addons in the MS store and the remarks by some in these forums I might loose these after a Steam purchase (still have not seen an official link confirming this), convinced me to go MS store again. Although I prefer Steam I find the Xbox app very intuitive as well. I never had issues upgrading MSFS 2020. Bring on MSFS 2024!

I'm glad I read this thread. I was going to switch to Steam but if I lose my MS Store purchases I guess that's now not going to happen.

Just to make sure we get the word out.
It has now been confirmed in the MSFS2024 FAQ that purchases made can transfer over between Steam and MS store.

Yeah, I saw that. I already purchased the MS Store version, although I would have preferred Steam. Patience really is a virtue 😐

Still haven't made the purchase, but I am also enjoying GA flying on my phone and tablet with xcloud, and am sure I will enjoy it even more once the ground level detail increases. Store again for sure!

Wait, on your phone and tablet?

Always Steam for me. Like some others on here I have all my games on Steam and I'm used to managing them that way.

I will say however that I think its really cool for those who have a PC and Xbox that you only need to get the game once and then enjoy it on both platforms.

Yes. And one of the recent updates now added on screen touch controls and tilt sense.

Gee, that's nice. When I switched from MS to Steam 4 years ago that was not the case...

This is just for going from 2020 to 2024, there's no confirmation there will be cross purchasing between the two versions of 2024 other than as gifts.
