2024 has improved again

Featured Replies

Streaming is faster today and the detail is becoming even more amazing.  I now see hedgerows and walls!  The resolution of the ground has stepped up a notch as the streaming has improved. As I said in my previous post about terrain resolution, it is no longer possible to land anywhere - you have to check the area out first as you would irl.

This video is in the Leeds area of the UK. You can see so much ground detail and features not there in 2020.  Towards the end of the video you can see the walls and hedgrows appear, separating the fields.  Look closely enough and you'll see farm animals run away from the aircraft.

2020 ground is already starting to look bland!

Today I did a little test flying - still learning all the new keys - up in northern Ontario and the terrain resolution seems much better than 2020, it captures more faithfully the rolling landscape. I could not go back to 2020 now.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

Yep something finally "clicked" for me this evening, threw the Optica around a couple of places and it was great fun landing on  a beach avoiding the rocks. A step closer to uninstalling MSFS2020 I feel.

I generally agree with the vibe of your post, but I am hoping they do something about the good old PG green blobs. There's a lot of amazing detail now in the new look scenery, but there are still huge problems with both excessive tree numbers in some areas and these PG uglifacts.

But sure, the more I play with it the more I'm liking it. And hopefully the various issues will get get resolved in time. I certainly feel a lot happier in 2024 after one week than I remember feeling in 2020 at the same time.

Load times, exit times are hugely improved, and I personally haven't experienced any problems with the streaming (apart from the first 36 or so hours, of course). I noticed today at one start up I got a message saying all my 2020 stuff was now converted/copied (can't remember the exact text) so I guess that's been done in stages in the background. And I see just now that the"My Library" tab in the Marketplace screen is actually dimmed and not available, which I assume means they're working on it at the moment, which will be another big step forward.

And I'm slowly getting my controls set up the way I want them. Which, despite some of the posts I've seen here, is a bit more complex than it should have been. I've been going through and documenting everything in a spreadsheet and there are lots of changes and additions, duplicates even, to some of the command areas. 99 cockpit camera view commands now! Still, even that has been interesting as I'm discovering lots more things I wasn't even aware I could do.

There are definitely lots of little annoyances and relatively petty issues that will need to be fixed (for me, some of the default planes don't seem to do what they should, e.g. landing gear not working etc), and for my own tastes I've found almost as many dodgy bits of scenery as excellent bits, but unless they screw up big time (which is always possible of course, it is Microsoft ultimately and they have certainly managed to make some fairly major bob-boos in the past), I am personally confident that this will all work out brilliantly. And in a relatively short space of time.

I'm sure there are genuine issues for some folk, but I suspect there are a lot of toys being ejected from prams simply because people aren't taking the time to sit down and learn how to do stuff now. And to anybody feeling frustrated with it, I'd just say - take a break for a day or so and give it another chance. You might be surprised.

Good to hear. I think my concoction has been pretty solid from the beginning, but I haven’t been overly impressed with the ortho resolution. Look forward to testing after work.

Edit; sorry, do you mean the tesselation resolution or the ortho resolution?

Agree, server issues seem much better. Can finally start a flight within a minute. Starting MSFS2024 itself however still takes 15 minutes...

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Interesting, that seems really long. 2 min and 35 sec when timed for me.

That does seem like a long time.  I just timed my startup.  3min-20 sec and that was longer then normal.

that's exactly what I have experienced today low flying over fields with shadows along grooves and sandy landing strips. I was wondering why I hadn't  observed that before, but if they changed the data only today that would explain it. this is very obvious when the sun is low, realistic looking micro terrain detail. I am loving it, especially in VR.

when people complain that fps have not improved: one has to remember that there is so much more subtle graphic detail like this terrain micro detail and soft cockpit shadows without jaggies (not even counting the meticulously placed pebbles 😄) something that simply didn't exist in MSFS 2020.  very soon we will get so used to it and take it for granted.

I for one have not used MSFS2020 ever since November 19th and don't expect I ever will.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Still the same terrible experience here in Australia, 32 minutes and on 10% activating packages, last Monday I tried it took over an hour to load into an airport with textures built from vaseline and based on my current stopwatch timer it will be just as bad.   Is this still queuing I wonder because all throughout this time there is no network traffic, I only see things being downloaded when I start the flight and it loads its Minecraft visuals.  I guess AU is down under indeed when it comes to being in the pecking order for this disaster that is streaming everything.

ALT-F4 it is, not even going to bother waiting.

and that is with an empty COMMUNITY folder?

This won't help but all fine here and I'm in Melb.

Even one or two ORBX compatible airports and scenery packs have been updated.

Yesterday FlightSimBuilder released their updated MSFS 2024 compatible software for their panels so now I have full use of my G1000 suite and I feel I'm getting just as good if not better flying over MSFS2020.  I run a I7-7700K/GTX1080Ti on a 100/40 HFC connection.....but I'm seriously drooling over a new rig from Scorptec using an 9800X3D

Yep the idea of streaming games in this country is ludacris. We simply dont have the infastructure isp ftth etc to facililtate it. In the end anything local on the PC wont have an issue but when it comes to online anything its going to be a word not allowed problem. 2020 is no prob however 2024 doesnt properly work at the moment. Marketplace im sure will partially fix this and make this a decent sim. On paper it works in real life people are going to miss out simming.
