Attacks on BATC...Are they warranted?

I didn't open any BATC thread, just replied in them.

  • Seems to me like this is orchestrated. Two threads were started by two who hardly ever post on this forum, on the same day.  Very strange.

No you just chose not to read the description.

  • It is odd indeed.  I use BATC every flight and while every once in a while it does something that annoys me, it’s generally so much better than any ATC experience I’ve had in any flight sim and it get

I never said that you did? I think you're kind of missing the point I was making. Nothing was directed at you.

What the...?! Choosing that over CPDLC??

A large number of people on the discord admitted they had no idea what CPDLC was. I agree I'd love to see CPDLC integration but need to remember that there is a lot of people in the community all with varying levels of knowledge when it comes to flight simming and ATC.

Though just to add, BATC did stress they are still concurrently working on core features, this was just a vote for a user-requested feature.

Er, I do not know what CPDLC is

After reading this and other threads I bought and installed Beyond ATC.

Experiences after 3 flights are very positive - even if there have been some hiccups. Last flight was from EDDB to EKCH (quite short) with the Fenix A320. Traffic integration with FSLTS models was really good, at least until all traffic somehow stopped and Kastrup was clogged with ground traffic. The go-around was beautifully vectored, I have to say. Second go-around command I simply ignored, connected to ground and taxied to the gate. 🙂 So, some things are not working everytime, yet, but the experience is great. BATC understands almost everything I say, although I use a crappy webcam mic half a meter in front of me and speak in my worst German accent. When I wanted to cross rwy 12 in EKCH I had to get a bit less polite ("I am still waiting to cross runway 12!") but BATC reacted well with letting me go ahead.

Could you elaborate on «all traffic somehow stopped»? I don’t think I’ve experienced this. Also - two go-arounds at Kastrup - did you use max traffic settings?

Sure! What I meant but somehow didn_t write very clearly is that ground traffic got in a traffic jam in Kastrup without many approaching aircraft. The planes just stopped at runway crossings and didn't move any further. I have not observed flying traffic.

Traffic settings are on standard (5, I think). I could not see any immediate reason for the go-around. No aircraft on the runway, the plane in front of me had already long evacuated the rwy. But still ATC commanded a second go-around. I should have tried to aks for a reason, though. Mayby BATC gives an answer if I ask politely. 🙂

There was an update today that includes major rewrites to the vectoring engine including better descent logic, better factoring of STAR restrictions and approaches without a STAR.

Quote

🧭 Vectors and Navigation

- Major rewrite of the vector handling engine which should significantly improve vectored approach handling.

- STAR final altitude restrictions now correctly factored into vectoring.

- Vector altitude assignments now avoid premature descents and reduce invalid terrain warnings.

🛫 Traffic Enhancements

- 2/3 of traffic flights now include full realistic flight plans giving more realistic route following

- Enroute traffic logic updated to better reflect realistic behavior, with smarter insertion and reduced radio spam.

- Gate sizing and parking logic reworked for better model placement, less overlapping and avoidance of unsuitable gates.

- Added 300nm traffic insertion range above FL190 to increase traffic at cruise altitudes. (An updated traffic map tool v1.1.1 that includes this radius change is available from https://www.beyondatc.net/download)

- Introduced Emirates cargo tail number mapping and improved registration mapping for AIG models.

- Added support for MSFS2024 built-in GA models (150+ aircraft) for broader GA coverage (enabled by default for MSFS2024).

- New parking configuration for LGAV, ZBAD, ZBAA, RJGG and ZSPD to force terminal parking where FR24 data is missing post-landing movement data.

Improved takeoff & landing distance checking for AI traffic operations.

📡 Radios and Communication

- New option to allow in-sim Comm 1 & 2 state, volume, and transponder settings to control BeyondATC radios (disabled by default).

- Communication state handler rewritten to prevent speech generation spinning wheel and stuck communication bugs.

- Resolved issues with duplicate ATC frequencies and incorrect tuning during center handoffs.

- New premium voices introduced for French, Greek, Scottish, New Zealand and South African accents.

🛬 Approaches and Departures

- Improved approach selection for remote and RNAV-only airports.

- ICAO descent handling improved: intermediate altitudes used when none defined in STAR.

- Fixed early descent instruction issues when STAR is missing or flight plan has only one waypoint.

🛫 Airport Operations

- Updated runway allocation logic, including fixes for METAR parsing in low crosswind scenarios.

- Expanded airport ops updates (runways and split frequencies) based on user/community feedback.

🧳 Parking and Ground Ops

- Parking logic reworked to relax aircraft size matching, prevent “gate not suitable” errors.

- Improved selection between gates and ramps, particularly at high-traffic airports.

📈 Performance and Stability

- Performance tweaks made to reduce stutters caused by traffic handling.

- Fixes for null exceptions (including in TaxiCallbacks) that were common fatal error sources.

- Unity crash on close should now be resolved.

🔊 Miscellaneous Improvements

- Scroll wheel speed reduced for easier window interaction.

- TCAS updates for A350 (iniBuilds): callsigns now properly displayed.

- AIRAC cycle 2503, SID/STAR pronunciation data, airline callsign updated from Pilot Portal.

Maybe there’s something wrong with the airport layout. I’m on 2024 but I didn’t move EKCH over from 2020.

That’s a huge update. I wonder how many people are on the BATC team.

I assumed as much. But still... 🤦‍♂️

That's why it is important to be careful in what picks even get to be voted for in a community choosen feature. If you strive to do a realistic ATC add on and a large number of people is word not allowed of how ATC works in real life, then you better not offer them GSX integreation as a choice, before stuff that ATC really does in real life.

Afaik the actual dev team is 2 people. The update is indeed huge but it's been worked on for quite a while and has been in beta (experimental) for quite a while too.

I did not miss your point, but as I was involved in that thread, I was making it clear I did not start any 'BATC' thread.

The UI in Pilot2ATC, and I tried it years ago, gave me a gigantic headache. Reminded me of when I had to learn Microsoft Access at work.

Its not the same any longer. Fairly straight forward, really. BATC and the newer programs take the cake on simplicity. Though this means they could use fine-tuning at times as well. Overall, its a good program. Still use BATC for IFR and I am keeping p2atc for general aviation and flight following, pattern work etc.

I have to say, the traffic injections is pretty impressive. I tested it out with the AVRO RJ and Fenix 320, which do take up a bit of resources from CPU etc, and set them down near KJFK. Traffic sliders all at 3, except parking I keep at 5 so the airports look full.  I see mostly FSLTL models and some AIG models. Some GA planes like a Fedex caravan. The performance was still decent using autofps.

Having all of them talk to ATC ground etc is pretty cool!

The basic voices are actually fairly decent. Wish there was a way to use default windows voices (they have vastly improved).

HELP BATC users!  I'm confused, again!

I'm flying into KPDX in the Longitude.  120mi out I tell it I'm ready for descent (to 10L per its instruct).  It tells me to descend via TEMBRS3 arrival.  So I start a so-called 'idle descent'. which puts me at 12K feet 90 miles out.  What was I supposed to do?  In the past, w/o ATC (or with default ATC) I would create a descent my less steep than idle.  What *should* I be doing with that instruct?  At TIMBRS3 the altitude is 12K feet on the FMC which is why I asssumed I should descend to that altitude.

Always follow the charts. Well, almost always sometimes real ATC may want you at a different altitude for spacing or something. But with BATC I just descend according to the STAR.
