I followed the instructions and after several false starts got it working. Uninstall Xbox app, uninstall GamingService app (I did it via Start/Settings/Apps) restart PC. Reinstall from Microsoft Store

Do any of you also have the TDS GTNXi? I've noticed that when 2020 doesn't shut down, killing the gtn_simulator.exe then allows MSFS to close itself.

Hello,

We have looked over your comments about the TDS GTNXi and MSFS 2020 shutdown and we have determined out that the TDS GTNXi is not causing issues with MSFS 2020 shutdown. It seems that this is a new MSFS 2020 bug, where the main FlightSimulator.exe process does not close properly.
We went as far as removing the TDS GTNXi completely from within MSFS 2020 and the bug would still exhibit.

As the TDS GTNXi is started via the EXE.xml and closed by a MSFS 2020 Quit event, most likely the Quit event is not sent due to MSFS 2020 crashing, hence why the TDS processes are still in memory.

We will continue monitoring this topic, but a fix must be addressed from the MSFS 2020 side.

Agree. The GTNXi not stopping is just a symptom. That's why I suggested there may be other EXEs that could (again as a symptom) cause this behavior.

Are you using steam or ms store version?

I've had this happen on and off since I got 2020 a year ago.

I use Steam and this can be a problem with a number of games. One reason is that Steam will always (unless cloud saves disabled) sync your game save data with the cloud during shutdown of a game. This can take a long time or sometimes if there are server issues (or your WiFi /lan/Internet connection is poor) might never happen meaning in the Steam library window the game will show STOP not PLAY and you cannot restart the game.

If you close Steam completely (use task bar right click /exit system icon area) IF sync is any issue it will say SYNCING DATA (from memory) before it shuts down. After a short period if it can't sync it will exit anyway and leave the cloud save error next to the game in library next time you start up.

If this happens with MSFS 2020 you need to completely close and restart Steam first. If this does not work then just logoff and on again to windows. This will close all open /non responding cloud connections and stuck processes (ie the 'invisible' ones you can't even see in task manager) and give you a fresh windows session and MSFS will now start fine.

If you're not using Steam the logoff method should still work.

I agree with that. I started FS2020 with an empty Community folder and still had the shut down bug problem. It does seem to be a MSFS problem.

The P3D sim not fully shutting down has been previously reported in the P3D products forums as well.

MSFS 2020 Started doing the same thing with my system after the last update.  Like it won't close all the way gotta go into task manager and finish closing out.

I also have the same problem with Windows 11, 24H2, Nvidia graphics 1070Ti,  MSFS 2020.  All the suggestions listed here did not work for me except killing the task and running the kill task batch file.  I even uninstalled ALL Nvidia apps and drivers and did a fresh install of an older Nvidia driver V 566.36 which many believe to be a stable driver.  Still same problem.  No problem with MSFS 2024.

I found this problem can be caused when an addon package fails to update properly. See this thread I made when I found the solution to my sim not shutting down properly:
