Newsky looks not too bad

I tried Newsky when it first came out and got a penalty on my first flight for a too soft landing.  Immediately uninstalled.

I'm in the same boat as others in that I find myself in that one section of users that are not looking for realistic simulation of careers, but mainly just want something to aim for when I fly and it allows me to fly routes I wouldn't normally consider. APL in its current form does this well enough.

its finished,Dev made his money then did a runner, glad i jumped ship months ago

I wish there would be a tool to professionally evaluate piloting skills other than just touch down rate ! For example, deviation tolerances during IFR approach, unstabilized approach, touching wheel within "touch down" zone, porpoised landing, go arounds.

I thought this post was gonna be about a simmer who finished all their ratings and got that first taste of actual airline lifestyle 😂.

Not to be that guy, but APL is right to give you a penalty - landing too softly can be dangerous:

  • it might not trigger the spoiler actuators if the touchdown isn't firm enough
  • it can cause you to float down the runway, airspeed to drop and an uncontrolled landing
  • it can cause lack of control in a crosswind or contaminated runway (e.g. puddles)

Obsession with "buttering" the landing is a simulator pilot thing, a real life pilot wants to feel that the aircraft is down.

First, it was Newsky that gave me the penalty, not APL.

Second, I'm a simulator pilot discussing simulator pilot software.  If you penalize me for "buttering" a landing, your program is getting uninstalled.

Nah, this is really situational.  On a challenging day, with a non- normal condition, on a landing distance critical or contaminated runway, absolutely - whomp it on and get stopped.

But on a nice normal day on a long runway where you've got the entire touchdown zone available before reaching LTP, you bet everyone tries for a smooth landing.  This doesn't mean it's ever permissible to float out of the the TDZ / beyond LTP, or flare yourself into an undesirable energy state etc.  But within the parameters of touchdown zone, stable approach and acceptable energy state, you've got a little room to seek a greaser, and I don't know a pilot that won't, when it's acceptable.

Most airlines have a policy to back up spoiler deployment; we sure do.  So if they don't open when you need them to, well, your hand is right there to back it up anyway.

Yeah some don't like anything that is realistic .😉

I almost always land a bit short of the real world touchdown zone in my PMDG 737-600. I think that this is because I sometimes land on runways that are borderline long enough for my aircraft, so I need to make sure that I land without wasting a significant percentage of the available deck.

I must have switched airlines with APL well over a dozen times, maybe more, because I would get bored with the same flights over and over again. Just started flying iFly Schedules and the variety of flights and airlines you can fly is amazing. No boredom here.
