June 23, 201213 yr Well first of all, Flightsimming is not play! It's a serious hobby. Just a friendly advice to the OP. If you want to impress a woman, do NOT use that phrase. Other than that I can't see being a flght simmer to be any hindrance, at least it hasn't been for me, as long as you do it in moderation and don't expect women to think you're this big, cool airline captain, like too many on this forum seem to think of themselves. June 23, 201213 yr Turn it around: Why would you marry a woman who won't let you pursue the things that interest you?
June 24, 201213 yr My next add-on for FSX is I am going to buy some vintage stewerdess dresses and have my girlfriend wear them when I fly my CS707 and serve me coffee :LMAO: Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
June 24, 201213 yr I am thinking about marrying my GF, she has no problem with me simming at all. But she does wonder why I spend so much time tweaking and so little simming(seriously).

June 24, 201213 yr she does wonder why I spend so much time tweaking and so little simming Many women spend even more time tweaking themselves, so they shouldn't wonder.
June 24, 201213 yr Yes, they do get married - I did 7 years ago today. I met my wife when I was 33 and I spent a lot of time on my sim (more than I do now). I lived alone, many of my friends were having kids so on the weekends I spent a lot of time in front of my PC. Fortunately, I went back to college when I was 28 and that is where I met my wife. With anyone I dated, I always hid the fact that I simmed for a period of time. Rather than keeping my yoke attached to my desk, it put it away when a date would come over. I consider it a pretty dorky hobby that has a lot of intellectual value - far more than D&D, shooters or other similarly situated hobbies. My sister is 8 years older than me and I couldn't imagine her married to someone that sims. Still, she is married to an oncologist that spends several weeks a year fly fishing all over the world. As dorky as simming may be, at least I'm at home. My advice - find a younger girl that appreciates a digital hobby. Find a girl that has a couple dorky hobbies of their own. She will probably be more fun and a better wife. She may even turn out to be very successful (my wife is a attorney for the federal government). If a woman can't appreciate the value of simming, she is not the one for you. One of the best parts of getting married, provided you find the right one, is the fact that you can pursue all of those hobbies that you loved when you were a kid. I'm sure at some point I'll start building model airplanes again and I'll probably put a train set together in my basement. I would, however, advise again the model airplanes until you are married. I can't picture a girl putting out when she's in a bed with model airplanes hanging from the ceiling above her head. June 24, 201213 yr Moderator My current GF of 7 years has no problem with it and neither did my ex-wife or any other girls I have been in long term relationships with. Granted some of them don't see the point and some think its boring and can't understand how I can sit if front of a computer for 2 to 3 hours at a time while flying from DFW to MIA or some other route. In fact my current GF, while not interested in it a bit, is amazed at how real it looks as well as the complexity of what it does and can teach you. Not to mention, she is amazed at how much I know about foreign countries and geography in general, which is mostly due to exploring new places in the sim that I have never otherwise known about or had an interest in learning about. The sim is almost like a flying geography teacher in some respects. Also, most of my girlfriends, ex-wife, and current girlfriend always say that there are a lot more other hobbies or things that I could be doing that would be more annoying or worse to them than simming, namely boozing, partying, strip clubs, weird fetishes, console gamming, and things of that nature. BTW, like others have mentioned, I never refer to it as "playing FSX'. I just tell her I am going to go do a flight on the sim or recreate an airline flight we may have been on at some point. I think it generally comes across better referring to it as simming or practicing (if you do some real life flying), than saying you are going to go "play FSX". One other thing PS762, if you do get married, not that you should feel like its necessary, but if you do, you will learn that some time apart from your spouse is a good idea as too much together time can sometimes lead to disaster. A few hours here and there of simming while she hangs out with her friends or does her own thing shouldn't cause any trouble. If you get a spouse who wants you to be by her side 24/7 you might consider pulling the rip cord as you might find that type of relationship to get real old fast, lol. "Coffee, tea, or me?" "Give me a moment, okay? The weather is down to minimums, I'm flying a difficult STAR, and I've got some pretty severe crosswinds." June 24, 201213 yr I think that you can gain a general consensus from these answers, that it's no bad thing, nor a barrier to a happy relationship. In fact quite the contrary in many ways, so long as you do not come across as some kind of obsessed nerd who is always banging on about it. Someone mentioned that you might meet a girl who herself likes computer games of some kind, which is indeed far more likely these days than it was a few years ago, I know quite a few women who play stuff like that. Actually, I was training a very pretty girl the other day (and I do mean very pretty, i.e easily a 10 on anyone's scale), who was really seriously into online RPGs. When we went for lunch, we were chatting about the forthcoming Guild Wars 2 game; so yes, there are some women out there who are interested in computer-based entertainment, and even some who are more into it than you are. June 24, 201213 yr I find it interesting reading this thread how some people hide this hobby. I never have and was always one to show it off to anyone that seemed interested. I spent a lot of money on my Saitek Gear so I like showing it off. People for the most part think it is pretty cool. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
June 25, 201213 yr I think it depends on who is around. If it is a fellow geek, I will show my FS gear with pride. Maybe it is just the industry I am in. I work with a lot of geeks but they are hipster geeks - they are not gamers. Another hat that I have worn is the past was in politics. In both industries, if you are sitting at home doing anything other than sleeping or blogging, you are wasting your valuable time. You shouldn't have enough time to sit around simming. I just think a lot of women may be turned off by the fact that they man that wants to get with them spends hours in front of a computer. Once you get to know a woman, you will know if they are the type that appreciate those types of things. In the end, you want someone that appreciates you for who you really are and if they can't, they are not the one for you. Still, men may want something more casual from time to time and in those cases, you may be better served by keeping the FS stuff to yourself. June 25, 201213 yr I am thinking about marrying my GF, she has no problem with me simming at all. But she does wonder why I spend so much time tweaking and so little simming(seriously). Good for you! If that's her only problem with you, you need to ###### her up as quick as possible! LOL Tweaking was at least half as much fun until I got my rig running just right (in my eyes). Then I set a restore point, and shortly thereafter the iFly 737 came out for FS9. Life hasn't been the same since then...! :-) Good luck to you and your decision, whatever they may be! I'd answer your question, but my wife is yelling at me to pause the sim as dinner is ready. ROTFLMFAO!!!! One other thing: I thought I read earlier someone say "turn it around", and I thought about this and, another way you could turn your question is to ask yourself not only what that poster recommended, but also: Would you marry a woman that reads all day and all night -- and never pays attention to you? The interaction is basically the same . . . does that make sense? Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. June 25, 201213 yr Of course flight simmers get married and their wives are very happy to be with one....here is a big reason why. Some girls marry a guy and he spends a lot of time hanging around pubs, going off to Soccer/football/rugby or whatever sport of choice and she is wondering where he is or what he is up to. A girls marry's a Flight Simmer and she knows exactly where he is.....he is in his den flying a PMDG 737 from Chicago to Detroit (the point if she doesn't have to worry about him). To be honest Flight Sim dudes are a good catch all things considered. That is exactly what my girl complains about too. She hates the jet noises, but she actually takes part in my hobby from time to time by flying around in the Carenado 152. She is fascinated by the technology and the scenery, and likes visiting different places in the world she has been. Cheers Yes, simmers get married and our wives are just fine with it. But you do first have to find a suitable woman, and that won't happen sitting at your computer on a Friday night. So, in that regard, you will have to "give up" at least a part of your FS hobby so that you can go out and become more social. I would also suggest that you don't make Flight Simulation the center of your universe, nor would I suggest that it enter any part of your conversation on the first (or even the second or third) date. You need to learn what a woman is looking for in a man, but, even more importantly, what YOU are looking for in a woman. And that kind of learning takes much more than a web post on AVSIM can even begin to address. Best of luck, my friend. This and this! Not married but might as well be - been together for 5 1/2 years, have house with mortgage and now bouncing little 3 month old baby boy! :) Just a friendly advice to the OP. Another wise bit of advice!
June 25, 201213 yr Well my wife of nearly 5 years just read the topic and the first post and burst out laughing, said that sounded cute and said she wanted to meet you because you sounded funny! So if that doesn't tell you something then I don't know. I'd say there's hope for you yet!! But......my wife doesn't mind my flightsim hoppy and has even come to the store to buy my latest Saitek gear, doesn't think I'm stupid when I tell her I need a new piece of hardware to make FSX run better etc etc. lol So flight simmers definitely do get married. Hell, my wife is even willing to uproot our family in my quest to join the RAAF as a pilot (fingers crossed it happens soon!) because she knows it's always been my dream.
