Why no good KSAN scenery?

Featured Replies

Well, THAT assumption isn't based on anything. Mine is based on the screenshots over at simmarket, and they don't totally convince me to buy it, to be honest (maybe I'm just spoiled by other developers). But what makes me think that the freeware version is superior is the fact that for KSAN apporach you really need the high rise buildings on the left of the approach path to RWY27, and those aren't included in your scenery - or at least your screenshots don't show them nor are they mentioned in the text.

I wouldn't either buy a Kai Tak scenery that only covers the airport itself, but omits the buildings around the checkerboard hill.

If the obsatcles on approach were depicted in your scenery, at least as good as in the freeware version, I'd probably buy it, though.

Best Regards,

Flo

Maybe you've found one negative thing to say about the scenery but that does not make the freeware version any better in all aspects. You're talking about "superiority" but without any proofs. Perhaps you think these sceneries (even the freewares) are made overnight? You should also know that depending on your fsx settings you might see more or less buildings. But anyway flight simmers are smart enough to make their own choice about what scenery to buy or not.

These are Fly Tampa's products and pricing

http://secure.simmar...words=fly tampa

If I were Fly Tampa, Instead of focusing on such quality products, I would churn out 10 lower Quality airport in the same time it takes them to make 1 quality airport and make 10 times more money.</Sarcasm> :P Why should Fly Tampa spend so much time in building quaility airports if 1/10 the quality/effort can be sold for the same price?

Its economics.

I generally dislike discouraging add on folks.. But if you have been in the business for more than 5 years, you need do something decent after a while.

Its time we demand a decent quality and what is acceptable for a payware addon.

Churning out airports in two months and charging the same amount as vendors who spend almost a year and man hours on their airports, would only discourage other quality vendors from doing quality work

I completely agree. - I FLY in flight simulator; I don't spend my time staring at ground textures, gates etc.

Imaginesim has the right idea. That is why they push out new fields every couple of months.

They don't produce the highest quality stuff, but, they have realistic gates, taxiways, runways etc.

-That is what really matters to me. I don't care about the fully modeled gas station 4 miles from the airport!

I was being sarcastic there Ben! LOL :)

I do care about the whole environment when approaching to land and I care about the qualiity of the runway and taxiway texutres and buldings.

In terms of priority of an add on airport.. My most imporant aspects in the order of priority is as follows. I am interested in what is important for others as well

Most important thing I look for in an addon airport in this order of importance.

1) high quality Runway and taxiway and airport ground texture

2) The whole environment when on final.. Not just the airport, but also its immediate viscinity.;.. Autogens and phototextures around the airport ..a 20-30 mile radius. Sometimes if there are other addons like Mega scenery then the airport vendor can afford to ignore this aspects and leverage other vendors products.

3) Accurate and realistic Airport buildings and tower

4) Other small details in the aiport

5) Moving gates etc..

I want the best sceneries. Even though Latin VFR are NOT among the best, they are still priced accordingly. Quality does not come cheap. Except for these guys: http://www.sunskyjet.com/

To me little details add to the immersion and are a must have.

I have to change that initial post to, "unless their sceneries are on sale, they are over priced, IMO" Unless, KSAN receives rave reviews, I'll skip this one.

they are over priced

+1

I avoid them because of their outrageous cost. Nice, but nowhere near worth the money their asking.

Not sure why guys like this haven't learned that a lower, reasonable price leads to far more sales, more use, more popularity, thus higher profits. Look at the companies who give things away to achieve this very thing.

There comes a point where you have to say it's too much, even if one can afford it.

I bought it though I was mulling the price. But the KSAN I had was just crap (MegasceneryX Socal buildings are in the wrong place) and I wanted a replacement. I don't have any other payware airport to compare it with but it seems good. Didn't see any drop in framerates, AES compatible. Lots of stuff around the airport. One reason I haven't bought any other airport is that they're generally just the airport and nothing around them...a shame because some of them are just stunning from what I've seen. It's the whole experience, as you come down the final approach, seeing the buildings, churches, parks, trees...that's more likely to get $$ than just an airport.

Guys,

I put together an freeware KSAN airport (not bad, but doens't have a lot of the custom terminals), the Coronado Bridge (excellent), San Diego Extras, and the freeware version of San Diego City Buildings. Now, certainly the airport scenery isn't nearly what you get with the payware, but I fly in to KSAN because of the approach anyway, and that is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY nice. Give it a try. It's all I really need. All of this scenery are available here on AVSIM.

The developer in question reduces the cost to something reasonable, then I'd buy it. But over $40 U.S.? Naw, I'll pass. It's not an aircraft, I don't live there, only fly in a few times a year, and, well, it's will never be worth the purchase price, not even close.

By the way, SunSkyJet's KPHL is hand down 10 times better than KSAN, and if you add AS2012 City Lighting it becomes INCREDIBLE at night - best I've ever seen. It's freeware by the way. I'm not comparing a commercial effort to freeware, just promoting SunSkyJet's work.

I bought it and pretty satisfied other than the gates do not operate in FSX. I am thinking about installing AES again to handle the gates, although I am very happy with GSX which I use at all other airports.

Anyway, other than the gates, I like the surrounding area graphics and the airport looks great. A small problem at night with the RW lights being too over glowing. May need to reduce light sizes . ..

In the end, it is nice.

Where are people getting this $40 for KSAN? I spent $26 for mine. I live in San Diego, do plane spotting there occasionally, and feel they did a great job with the add-on. To me I felt it was a very good deal. Let's see FlyTampa came out in what 2003-2004 and sold for $23 for just the airport. LatinVFR comes out with there version nine years later and is only three dollars more? And they included a larger surrounding area and photoreal terrain.

A few issues? Sure. Not exactly matching up with MegaScenery SoCal, yea... but for me nothing that is a deal killer. I was impressed they added the new terminal considering it hasn't even been built yet so they had to go off conceptual drawings.

I guess my biggest "eh" is they flattened the ground from the I-5 freeway to the airport where in actuality it is a slope which forms the bowl the airport is nestled in. I can see why that would make things easier to model and it does make flying over the freeway more prominent. I'm adding back the slope though to make it a more natural geographically.

They large, colored borders around the taxiways are a bit dated with that blue as today they are a bright green but again they captured the "feel" of the airport. I even placed myself at the parking lot where I go spotting and it had the same panorama at ground level - cool!

I'm kitbashing my Mega SoCal and Utopia buildings into the mix to get it just the way I like.

Again, overall VFR did a great job at a good price. Will spend many happy months flying around my home airport.

P.S. - Hey Joe, I use GEX like you, For the jetways, I believe you can remove them apart from the main structure as they are designed that way to work with ADE (at least as far as I remember). If that's the case, then using ADE one could put back in the FSX animated jetways to have them work. Would have made for a nice option for those who do not use ADE.

I think you mean AES rather than ADE.
