December 20, 201213 yr Burying a child a week before Christmas from being shot at school is so :( :( :( :( I'm watching the funerals on CNN.......my GOD the pain these families are going through. The pain the entire nation is going through. So often you hear about a tragedy and its so remote. Something else happens; the media focus shifts, and it all fades into the blur of life. You move on, and only the relatives and friends of those in the original drama have to deal with the messy aftermath. With this, we are all along for the ride. Sometimes it feels like every minute of it, the coverage is so pervasive. And we cant look away. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. December 20, 201213 yr And we cant look away. That's just it, the media can consume you. You do need to take a step back from all of this as too much coverage isn't healthy for you. December 20, 201213 yr Commercial Member "so yes I think gun control has done a lot good there"........ are you sure it is not because there is a camera on every corner there ? AND guns are illegal... no way I want to live in a country like that,..... hell they got tv ##### there that want to check your house for a tv. to pay tv tax ....... I will live with what i have ... once again lock this thread ! I don't think guns are really illegal in UK, like if you hunt you can get one. And I bet there are less surveillance cameras around the UK than in the US, in general after 9/11 US government and officials seem to be (maybe rightfully) a lot more paranoid than ones around here Europe. But yeah at least for me there's not that much more to discuss in this thread, it's really great how all this conversation has stayed so civil, shows what a amazing forum with wonderful people this place is.
December 20, 201213 yr Just a brief OT comment about this so-called "TV tax". It's nothing out of the ordinary around the world; it isn't a peculiarity of the UK; its purpose (at least in the UK) is to distance the gov't (and its interference) from the BBC while maintaining public funding (which prevents potential advertisers from dictating policy). From Wiki:- Whilst TV licensing is rare in the Americas, half of the countries of Asia and Africa, and two-thirds of the countries in Europe use television licences to fund public television.
December 20, 201213 yr You wouldn't be doing that. You'd be giving up one of your rights so that people that go mad can't slaughter children with firearms. You give up one, you may as well give up them all. I own semi-automatic rifles; even the same one used in the school shooting. They are for my protection; whether it be from some maniac attacking my family or an invading force. I will never give them up. No gun laws will stop these crimes. If you want to see how effective our government is at stopping something, I would direct you to either the mexican border or methamphetamine production. If they do halt commercial production, some as$hole in a toolshed will certainly find a way to build his own to carry out a plan of destruction.

AND guns are illegal... no way I want to live in a country like that,..... hell they got tv ##### there that want to check your house for a tv. to pay tv tax ....... I will live with what i have ... once again lock this thread ! please lets all move on It is a testament to the wonderful people that are here on avsim that discourse has been so civil but please enough is enough I personally feel a lot safer with our gun ban - that is to say that it's pretty hard for a member of the public to get hold of guns and ammunition. I read some time ago, I believe it was in America, that someone knocked on the door of a man's house, because he'd left his keys on the doorstep. There was no reply to the knock on the door, so the person, not wanting his neighbour to be burgled, opened the door to shout to the occupant that he was putting the key on his table - The occupant shot him several times, the friendly, thoughtful neighbour was killed. From what I heard the person was mentally unstable and had a paranoia problem, yet was allowed to own firearms.... I feel safer in this country knowing that should I wish to help out a Neighbour, or member of the public, the chance of my being shot at is so low that it is not a consideration. As for the argument that you need guns to protect yourself from armed robbers..... Most robberies in the UK are performed by non-armed robbers! They break in, usually in the dead of night, usually after people have left the house and steal what they want, and leave. Now firstly I don't want anyone thinking I am sympathising with criminals. I'm not. I believe in the hard line between right and wrong, and consider all who take from, or hurt another human being as scum. The reason that there are so many armed robberies in the US is because the occupant of the house is most likely armed, they feel the need to arm themselves to fight against the occupant of the house! It is, generally, safer NOT to have guns in all houses, than it is to have them. I'd also like to briefly address the question - should you be legally allowed to shoot someone who breaks into your home to steal from you - This is a tricky debate, but I say no. Yes, the person has done wrong in coming into your home, yes, they deserve punishment, but they do not deserve to die. You, as an individual, do not have the right to hold the power of life and death in your hands. As I said, most robberies in the UK, the criminals in question do not carry firearms, most do not assault or rape the occupants (Yes, before anyone says, i know this happens occasionally, but it is not the norm.) - By confronting the criminal you actually put yourself and your loved ones in more danger, not less. So yes, I feel much safer in my '######' country, that has CCTV cameras here, for my protection. I do not, and have never met anyone who has had their life affected, in real terms, by the levels of CCTV or lack of guns in the UK. The CCTV is there to catch criminals, and help protect us. I'm proud of our country, and what we have achieved. We are safe, we live without fear, yet we retain our freedom..... Isn't that what it's all about? You give up one, you may as well give up them all. I own semi-automatic rifles; even the same one used in the school shooting. They are for my protection; whether it be from some maniac attacking my family or an invading force. I will never give them up. No gun laws will stop these crimes. If you think your small arms collection is enough to keep you safe from an organised and planned invasion force, you watch far too much television! James W
December 20, 201213 yr If you think your small arms collection is enough to keep you safe from an organised and planned invasion force, you watch far too much television! Its for defense of people trying to knock down my door. the alternative is to just give up, and unlike you apparently, a sheep's life is not for me. don't be a dumba$s.
December 20, 201213 yr Brant, lets not resort to name calling please. This has been a good discussion so far. I don't feel I live the life of a sheep. I do what I want when I want, and have never felt hampered by the 'heavy hand' of government. Nor is leaving the fight for another, more qualified person giving up. Its knowing my limits. I'm a man of peace, and I choose to live my life that way... I don't feel that violence + violence = solution...... James W
