Aerosoft Twin Otter Extended Released!

I'm still in discussion with Aerosoft, so lets keep our hopes up.. ^_^

The goal is not a 2d GNS, but a 3d GNS, using the existing model,

fixing the overlap with other radios, activating the 3d knobs, and adding

LPV glideslope to the HSI..

I don't care that the RXP is not native. But knowing that people have asked from the beginning, they should have at least planned a little ahead to make sure that a "hack" would not overlay/corrupt textures. Pop-ups ruin the immersion for me.

Also, does the HSI support ILS approaches or does it not have any vertical guidance whatsoever? Can you even get an HSI (IRL) without vertical guidance? I didn't/don't think so.

ILS works, LPV does not.. They are looking into it..

Bert, if anyone can get this to work is YOU! Thanks.

Thanks for the update Bert, what you've said sounds positive. Let's hope that they can find a solution when they're back on deck which fits within their project bounds and also allows us to make use of the Reality XP gauges as well. It really is a lovely aircraft, and that would be such a cherry on the cake.

I asked this question yesterday, but it got lost in the thread.

Does the new Twotter have volumetric landing lights that actually light up the scenery?

Okay, so I got home finally, and bought this plane (about $26 with ver1 discount, very fair imho).

Initial thoughts:

Absolutely gorgeous VC, beautifully rendered gauges (extremely readable on my 23" 1920x1080 LED). Probably some of the easiest gauges on the eyes to date. They remind me of the Reality XP smooth gauges for FS9 (but of course they're 3D modeled). Nice external as well. NAV lights are really bright head on and dim as you get to the rear (might be a feature or a bug lol). Avionics are operated intuitively and smoothly... I miss the shiny RXP 530W integration but I'll leave it at that for now...

Sounds are excellent, sounds very real.

Flight model is excellent, beautiful hand flyer. Trims out well. I flew an ILS to precision minimums with minimal effort. Flight director is a little weird on the ADI. As you bank the needle moves too, I'm sure it's realistic but it makes FD flying a little interesting. Autopilot flying is intuitive, flies pretty well. HDG hold works great standard rate turns etc, IAS mode works well for vertical mode, ALT button tends to overshoot by about +/- 100 ft but that's fine. APR mode works alright, but seems to be 1/4 mi left or right of course on the localizer with a little wind when correcting... aka it corrects very very slowly back to the final appr course if you overshoot. As with most FDE's based off stock FSX autopilot it seems to overshoot the GS intercept, and then has to correct with a fairly rapid descent to get back to the GS.

Panel lighting is simplistic (not always a bad thing) with all gauge/backlighting/overhead backlighting on or off. There is a flood style light in the cabin too. Dimmable would have been a bonus... oh well...

A few issues

1) I can't seem to reset the flight timer. I can stop it but not able to reset... I'm probably just missing a step

2) Even though I have TIR 5, without a yoke hide function it can be difficult (annoying) to see the lower part of the HSI, VSI, and radar altimeter. Also the fuel tank indicators can be tricky as well.

3) No RXP integration (sorry I couldn't resist :P )

Overall an excellent addon for the upgrade price. I think I'd pay around max $35 for this thing (yes even without the RXP integration). It's not super fast but VMO is 170kias I believe... so with a decent tail wind you'll find yourself doing 180-200 KTAS at altitude.

p.s. No "Lotus" style landing lights...

What are you fine fellows doing with these settings for the new twotter? I got troubles, whoa-oh. I got worries, whoa-oh
I got wounds to bind

Kind regards,

PS Oh Yeah, here it is... The Five!

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
And you were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-oh
I got worries, whoa-oh
I got wounds to bind

So I went to the corner
Just to ease my pains
Yeah, just to ease my pains
I got troubles, whoa-oh
I got worries, whoa-oh
I came home again

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mi-i-i-ind and
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-oh
I got worries, whoa-oh
I got wounds to bind

And I got a feelin'
Down in my sho-oo-oo-oes, said
Way down in my sho-oo-oes
Yeah, I got to ramble, whoa-oh
I got to move on, whoa-oh
I got to walk away my blues

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-oh
I got worries, whoa-oh
I got wounds to bind

Not really acceptable in a 2013 payware aircraft if you ask me. It is now well known technology by developers how to do this as most have achieved it, including Aerosoft. I even have freeware with these lights.

Admittedly this is only a small omission, and I am still going to upgrade as it will be a big improvement over the original.

Would you gents like to see an amphibian model of this? I see that they plan on putting this bird on floats...but why not gear and floats? FSX is missing a "anywhere" bird.

One thing about RXP is that Pro-ATC-X it does not function with it. And I use that for my ATC background etc...

Another idea I have floating before me besides floaters (my age? no cant be): Has Aerosoft considered making their own gauges for GPS which would then be implementable in all a/c they sell?

Yup, do want amphibian too. Might buy it if it did.

I've owned it 1 day now, and have to say I absolutely love it..... It is just a BEAUTIFUL aircraft to fly around nice scenery in.

Some rambling notes from my first 6 hours flight with the plane:-

  • I'm a TrackIR user and haven't had any problems with visibility of gauges/controls being blocked by the yoke. I do use Opus Cameras though and slightly changed the default VC view.
  • Visibility with TrackIR; to look up at the top overhead panel (lighting, bleeds, signs, etc) is quite tricky; but look at the real plane - it's awkward there too! .... as it's set back quite a bit. Manageable; just can be tricky, but again; realism (that's what we demand).
  • As Ryan said the FD is strange; vertical and lateral modes can be used independently, which can be strange, following only 1 bar but perhaps that's realistic for the real life unit.
  • The AP is generally lovely (IAS mode: lovely to see this custom mode and it works great). However, moving the 'pitch wheel' (centre of yoke unit) results in a very slow lazy change in pitch. I have to press the pitch dial down about 20 times, just to get -1000 FPM descent. Of course there is IAS Hold, but it's not great on descent because the PT6 power changes are so delayed and 'lazy' that you end up in a vertical oscilation of vertical speeds.
  • My single only disappointment is that unlike the last few Aerosoft releases, FSUIPC Mouse Macros are not working with this aircraft, so I was unable to use these to assign key presses to that fiddly 'pitch wheel' ; so it's mouse click city, and very fiddly. The default AP key commands for Vertical Speed Inc/Dec do not work with this dial, and neither to the default (FSUIPC) commands for Pitch Ref Inc/Dn. My solution for now is to hand fly all descents! ... but you know what, a lot of Twotters have no AP so that's no hardship  ........ but it would be wonderful if Aerosoft could bind the default 'AP_Pitch_Inc/Dec' commands to the up and down commands of that pitch wheel
  • It is a fantastic add-on that will only get better when the other versions (eg... -100) are added to the package.
