Searching for weather engine

Good to see they will try to match what FSGRW is doing, those localised effects are terrific.

Yes, its a good idea. I like the fact that Opus will be editable by the user. Does FSGRW have this option?

This is good news! Competition between products makes us all a winner.

I see OPUS is implementing local effects like FSGRW and turbulence without cams.

Im really interested if HIFI SIM will or is working on a new wx engine with alot of these enhancements that are being developed. That would be a definite buy from me.

Dont know to be honest, one thing I like about it is that the developer loads it for me, I just fly :P

FSGRW looks nice but I am not ready to spend money on yet another weather engine... they aren't cheap. Maybe OpusFSX will come close to what FSGRW can do... Does FSGRW load the weather in a large region in one time too? Like OpusFSX does?

Folks - I am SO surprised!!!  I've been kicking FS aeroplanes 'round the sim-world since the days of Bruce Artwick... I've owned every version of Chris Willis's clouds, and followed those into all of the Active Sky series, plus taking the measure of all of the REX series... and I thought I was set for weather textures and weather engines......

Then I got to reading this thread - almost by accident - I mean - why would I be interested in reading another "REX vs OPUS vs AS 2012?  .. and then I saw all of the praises for one I'd never even heard of - FSGRW..

So, ho-hum - I downloaded the demo, flew out at Bowerman, and then another at Elstree.. For the first time on an approach, I had the feeling that the aircraft was "live" - not EZCA live, but properly responding to the air currents. it was a "feel" that I had not had in the sim before. I moved over to Orbx's EGTR, Eltree - weather from Northolt, and taking off from 26, getting that same feeling again. On the approach she (Car. C152II) needed some right aileron/left rudder, and was still feeling a bit bumpy - very, very real bumpy. England-Summer-over-the-Cotswolds bumpy. This was not EZCA! I windowed FSX to check what FSGRW was reporting for pressure and wind...  was surprised as heck. The pressure was bang on, with wind 310 at 11kts.. Wow!!

The Interface is simple, clean, and very user-friendly: the cloud depiction and control is first-class - grey and overcast is grey and overcast. When it says Scattered, 500 - that what it is - but the gravy is the interaction between FSGWR and the aircraft.

Thank you to all the guys here that have (basically) advertised this add-on! It is just the best weather I have ever experienced in the simulator, and heading over to buy it right now.

Well, well... think I will have to give that addon a try too...

Lol Jeroen, i knew you wouldn't resist. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

Nothing to lose, it's free for a while and takes all of 1 min to download, install and start....

One fun tip for new FSGRW customers.  You can download and save a specific weather report and use it anytime.  For example, I had very low minimums flying into KMDW, so I saved the downloaded weather and named it "low minimums KMDW 18:00 hours".  Now I can reload that file and repeat the same experience whenever I want.

1. What happens when you load that weather at a different location? Is the weather er... earth location dependant or plane location dependant?

2. Afaik this won't work with the demo in which you can only load a downloaded file once.

It'll adapt to the new location and give you the time that was over there at that time / date, so, possibly a CAVOK one in this particular scenario.

Even the localized weather simulations for specific airfields depend on the weather at the moment or in the saved file. You'll be in trouble at LPMA only if the RW or saved weather data is prone to generate such weather phenomena.

@1: Plane location dependant, i think, as You can select the ICAO code for Your destination airport

... at least as far as i remember, but i purchased FSGRW already quite a while back, so i can not remember that well.

If You want to be 200% certain, maybe check out FSGRW's support site though.

As far as i can tell, the FSGRW's support is really helpful.

Enjoy flying and happy landings.

100% would be enough but I will ask it there indeed.  ^_^ But maybe I didn't make it clear enough I was asking what happened if you load that SAVED file in another location because what jcomm posted seems impossible to me: that would mean the saved file would contain ALL the weather for the entire globe which seems a bit much to me.

I can be wrong, but I don't think so...

This weather generator / injector uses GFS data, thus World coverage. They rum their model on that and other sources and build what I would call a "weather grid", just like we do here at the metoffice with our forecast models. So... when you go somewhere they just have to match the weather file with the correct time/place ( if it is set for a range of time ), or for the static Global situation stored there, and then just depending on the place.

Anyway, I just asked the dev and will post the answer ASAP...

P.S.: I tested ths a few days ago. I had saved a weather file on a date and time where particular significant weather was being observed near Frankfurt. I then used that file severeal times to practice approaches to that airport under the rather nasty weather they were experiencing that day, around 1430 UTC. Placing my aircraft at other airports in the World, LPPT for instance, resulted in the weather that was consistent with LPPT's METAR observation  and higher level forecasts - a very nice Sunmer day...
